The Voice of Prince

I've read alot of threads since 1998.

Mainly here.

Most of them end up discussing the lack of ingenuity since the 80's.

There is no reason to believe (imho), that Prince ever lost a bit of his focus since he was born.

He has gone on off many, many tangents and i think that's where the majority of the disagreements begin.

But what is the constant that keeps our tangent-soaked opinions evolving? lol

.

I think the one thing that we can all agree on the most is that his voicings are one of a kind.

.

i haven't started many threads since 1998, either.

.

.

Prost!

er

I always love to be the first one to respond to a thread, but I don't really see what this one's about. Prince has a good singing voice? Sure he does. He can mix up voices and sing along to himself, which is what Marvin Gaye invented when he was recording What's Going On.
If your question was: what keeps you interested after all those years, my answer is because every while in a great once, after so much boring music, he'll live up 2 all yer funxpectations, no matter how high or low.

Voicings are simply a chord structure.

What i may have made more complicated than it is, is that Prince has a unique way about the process.

Not just his own singing voice, but also all instruments he has a hand in arranging.

One of many exanples might be his sick rhythm guitar chords.

Or the horns he writes but doesn't play.

Stuff like that.

His stamp is still on the music, and is still intriguing to me, even if the songs as whole compositions may not hit the level of his peak output (back when he was out to prove something).

I will also add that i have a W I D E range of musical tastes, but Prince is still the most interesting.

I guess i wrote all this because i witnessed many Orgers leave.

It makes me feel a bit sad and perplexed.

.

Prost!

Chord voicings are a way to re-arrange the individual notes of a chord. FYI: Prince hasn't used any unique chords voicings.

Simply put, a C major chord is spelled thusly - C-E-G. Your standard, run-of-the-mill guitar version looks like C-E-G-C-E. You can also do it like Hendrix did in The Wind Cries Mary, (not that it was in C) where he used the 3rd of the chord, (the E note) in the bass voice. His version in that case was E-G-C.

Prince did not use unique or interesting chord voicings. His chord progessions could be a little different at times, but nothing without precedent.

Prince is great, but his innovations came mostly from what he left out of an arrangement, not what he put in.

I would say the misunderstood version was more accurate: VOICE

I was actually thinking about my lame take on the whole thread-starting situation today, and i was wondering what my long-lost musical colleague would think of the topic.

Thanks for the response, John!

Prince's actual singing voice is a one a kind. I was thinking of that in the forefront.

But noone else i have ever heard can space a bass in the context of a rhythm pattern quite like him.

Perhaps my understanding of "voicing" was a bit too expanded.

I still have my wallmart sherrifs' badge!

I know his voice is still amazing because his verse on Janelle's "giving em what they love" is classic 80s Prince

"Do you really know what love is?"
