I've learned an awful lot from you guys

First off I just want to say that I've been stalking the site for a little over a year now... just became a die hard fan last year.. was always attracted to the handsome devil but lost my mind after attending the welcome to Chicago shows.. I just wanted to thank all of the true fans.. that stick up for him through it all... which is the reason why I signed up BTW... I've learned more about him from you all than any other source... smile

You're bound to learn alot on this site, not least how conversations can degenerate into arguments for no apparent reason. lol

However, there are plenty of purple yoda's here who are keen to impart their knowledge. Some probably know more about Prince than he does.

Too true Scotsman1999! This place is an encyclopaedia of Prince facts both good & bad, but u've got to hunt for the stories. That Sand dollar thread still makes me chuckle! lol

Well first some people did an amazing lot of research after 1990: the fanzine Uptown, their books and Per Nielsen's books were an unvaluable source of information, and some other books have good info: Liz Allen's book, Dez Dickerson's book, Alex Hahn's book... Big props to some people here and on Housequake.com who also did an astonishing job at reasearching and compiling data as well: BorisFishPaw, Langebleu, Madhouseman and Scififilmnerd come to mind but I couldn't name all the people that allowed me to learn about this or that, the list is endless. Now we get these interviews on the Dye's Got The Answers blog which are often insightful and some ex associates even came here to tell us stories every once in a while.

Then for my part there were also these dozens of hours roaming in record stores looking for the rare Prince or Prince-related gems, which later morphed into hours roaming on P2P networks.

As for the internet it allowed dozens of interviws by associates to be available online, and we learned a great deal from these as well.

And of course there's Princevault.com which is now the ultimate online resource, and hopefully my efforts in putting a chronological discography together is helpful to some too wink

I've been a Prince fan for 24 years, that is 2 thirds of my life, I've spent a considerable amount of time researching everything Prince-related and reading stuff online and it's far from being over: I keep learning new things every week or so just by reading this forum and asking questions. When u start looking into details you realize it's endless: even Per Nielsen and Uptown missed a few things here and there. The thing is that Prince's legacy is so gigantic that some of us nerds can't help plunging into it and trying to gather every possible information. Not so many artists elicit such a researcher's vocation, but usually very prolific artists do: some other people have been quite amazing at putting together discographies for the likes of Bill Laswell or the guys from Yellow Magic Orchestra, for example, because there's also so much to discover there.

It's only a hobby but with Prince it easily becomes a fascinating and obsessing hobby. My only regret is that Prince's legacy is so huge that I'll be dead long before everything is released, even if I happen to die after Prince because I'm 18 years younger. I hope that when I do someone can take over my website and pursue my work so that Prince's official discography keeps being updated for all eternity smile

Wowzer... I totally agree with you... it's an obsession/hobby/job, but a fun job.. every time I read new information about him I just get goose bumps... I've completely stopped watching the stupid box (tv).. it's amazing how much time you guys and myself spend exploring chatting learning and just being in his world.. my outside friends are so sick of me talking about him and it makes me feel some kind of way so I just stop talking about him

Perhaps you already know, but there's a bunch of Prince interviews since 1979 collected on this site:

princetext.tripod.com

As for learning a lot from this site the org, yes it's full of information, almost endless, but there's a lot of junk on here too - hearsay, opinions, misunderstandings, flat-out lies/stories. If you're discerning, I'm sure you can separate the wheat from the chaf. Also, you have to search and poke around to find really great info. I accidentally found a thread where one of Prince's drummers got on several posts in and basically took Q&A from everyone - really informative. I also really love random stories of people who had actual personal encounters with him. Many are collected on threads like "have you met him?" but other great anecdotes pop up in random other threads - they are like little gems in an endless quagmire of the usual rehashed topics. I love reading about the encounters fans had when they had vip access to concerts thru the npgmc. One guy was at his house in LA during the 3121 time. Some woman shared her fries with him. Someone else spoke to him in an airport restaurant in Japan during (I think) the lovesexy era. I just love these stories.

I also like all the musical knowledge that people bring - some of the more "serious" musical discussions are quite informative.

It was Michael B., you should find this thread thru a quick search I guess. I haven't kept a copy of it but ChronicFreeze did a great Q&A here a few years back that was next erased at his request, maybe somebody has saved it and can send you a copy, it contains the most hilarious story about Prince and an "underwater" guitar sound effect lol

I've been here for 17 years.

The 'Org' has outlasted all competition.

It has quite a history and a wealth of information.

As far as the members, i've witnessed many come and go, but the main players are:

Ben! (always number 1)

The rest are in no particular order, but are essentially key to the legend and agenda...

Boris Fishpaw#

Bart Van Hamelen (yeah, i said it!)

Anxiety (Where R U?)

VC(pick a number)

.

mrsrogers, if you can find past posts from these people, you might just learn a purpleload more!

.

Prost!

Databank I cannot thank you enough for your discography, It's been invaluble in my organising a complete Itunes ready folder including all promo edits (Still missing a couple but at least I know which ones)

To me your work is part of that great legacy of fan communication and has been and will continue to be a fantastic resource for any completest or casual fan alike
