Would P benefit from Vinyl?

So, I was listening to a local station the other night (college radio) during a salsa segment.

They interviewed an artist who was putting out music on vinyl, b/c he believed that the old analog recordings allowed the full intensity & depth of the music to be experienced.

So that got me thinking... hmmm

Would analog recording and vinyl playback be a BETTER medium for Prince's music today (or in general)?

Would it allow the funk to shine through better than the sanitized digital method? Would a song like "Planet Earth" sound better? (I didn't say "great" just "better") lol

question What do you think? question

I love Vinyl.

And I would love to see his next album get a vinyl release.

To me it's not just about the sound but the whole package. I feel it has more substance.

Same here, but... For years and years Prince's albums have been uneven. Some songs are good, some songs are so-so, some are totally unlistenable. And since you cannot skip tracks on an LP, I'm afraid listening to a new Prince LP would be a frustrating experience. There's nothing I would like more than a Prince LP that's good all the way through, but that just doesn't happen anymore. With Prince, you always have to take the bitter with the sweet.

I love the Vinyl Experience (good song title there, I might use that...) so much more than CDs. I only play those in the car, generally.

Yeah yeah, I know, but walking up and down to your record player, picking up the needle and putting it down again in exactly the right spot... In that case, I prefer a remote control. Okay?

The vinyls are so nostalgic, and I digged them.

...but I don't see how that would be possible for him to release new materials on vinyls, considering the distributions of it are so obsolete, just as obsolete as a 8 track.

Plenty of artists are releasing on vinyl. Vinyl sales are actually GROWING (as opposed to CD sales).

When you buy vinyl on Amazon, you get the MP3 downloads for free...something many indie artists have been doing for YEARS.

Check out POPmarket if you really think it's as "obsolete" as 8-tracks. Their catalog of available albums on vinyl is growing.

I want to bring the thread back to my original intent...what I am asking you, as Prince fans, is whether or not you think that the "richness" in sound that analog recordings & vinyl playback offer could be something that Prince's music could BENEFIR from?

Let me state this; I have played back the Musicology album over & over. The title song is strong. I like it. The beat, the arrangement. It should work, but yet for me - it falls "flat". I don't know how else to describe it. If he had recorded it analog instead of digital, and we could get the full range of the instruments & bass and all that...would the experience be a BETTER one?

question What say you?

No doubt vinyl has a great sound, and Prince's best albums came out that way originally, but I don't think that's what the OP is asking.

Vinyl will not make Prince's songs any better, or benefit Prince at all. Maybe some of the jam sessions might sound better on vinyl, but the content and lyrical craftsmanship of his recent work is lacking, not so much the instrumentation.

What about ANALOG recording on top of vinyl.

That's essentially what a salsa artist was claiming for his genre...that salsa music sounds best when those two variables are utilized.

Maybe, but I just don't think a song like Breakfast Can Wait or FixUrLifeUp would sound any better on vinyl.

.

My stance on this is that vinyl can't save a weak song just by sake of being an analog version.

Yes, I agree that a bad song is a bad song. Totally.

But I dunno...I'm wondering if the switch could add a lil' somethin' somethin' to his newer stuff.
sigh shrug
