I'm going to give a nod to; "7".

Came really close to being the shortest-titled #1 song when it was released.

What was the shortest?

You know, it speaks to the greatness of P's catalogue that a jam like '7' could be largely forgotten, after all these years. If some one-hit wonder had put that out, I'm sure it would be fondly remembered by everybody.

I forget who has the distinction in the USA...for the UK it's "If" by Telley Savalas in 1975 (yeah, I googled it).

I remember listening to whatever Top-40 Countdown show I used to listen to here in NY, and I distinctly remember that "7" had stalled at the #2 spot...and the DJ even stated that he missed landing that distinction.

neutral But check out what Google says;

The most successful single from the album in the U.S., "7" was most successful on the Top 40 Pop/Mainstream charts, where it earned a #3 placement, and coincidentally the single peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It performed respectably on the Rhythmic charts (#19). However, it was less popular with R&B/Hip Hop radio, stalling at #61. In the Canadian RPM charts the song peaked at #12.

The single performed well in the U.K., rising as high as #27, but falling short of the success of the previous two releases.

Yep, Black Sweat is almost a great song. But it has two major flaws, the worst being that high pitched wail of a keyboard line. It's ear-piercing.

My choice for best recent single is Call My Name -- catchy melody, sweet sentiment, some clever & some edgy lyrics, pretty good video, little bit of promotion, and lots of radio airplay.

But that's why Black Sweat is good!

I remember on youtube, there were dozens of videos of young people singing along or doing covers. There were also quite a few dance studios doing choreographed routines to the song. It definitely could have been a hit in the youth market. Probably because it was close to what Pharrell was doing at the time which is funny because Pharrel obviously was biting Prince's 80s sound.

Ok, I'll bite. What is the second "major flaw" in Black Sweat?

Did it have an unreleased song as B-side?

If not: it cannot be considered.

Soft & Wet. He's been coasting and recycling the ame watered-down garbage with diminishing returns for decades. Prince is over! biggrin

What??!!!

All these oh-why-can't-Prince-be-like-he-used-to-be whiners.

You're gonna tell me you didn't like Just As Long As We're Together? You know he made a second album, too, right? And I think there may have been a third--I know I heard some single called "Uptown"--that was okay, if I remember right. Maybe a fourth... it got hard to keep up and follow everything after that. I got a life to lead. But you've got to have heard Just As Long As We're Together, and that Lover song (I can't remember the whole title)-- he said something about coming or going or something, too.

I mean, yeah, Soft and Wet was the best thing he ever did--I'm not crazy--but he did some good stuff after that. You should really give some of that later music a try.

Hater.

I dont know what you mean by "boring james brown shit." unless you mean anything that does not sound like the revolution or 80's, it sucks.

when he performed the song in vegas it was great and I enjoyed it.

The ear-piercing is what makes the song good? We must have different tastes in music.

Ah, I was waiting for that question biggrin

It's the title/chorus. What exactly is "black sweat"? Seems like it's probably/obviously a racial reference, but Prince usually is a little more subtle about that, at least on singles. He could've have gone two other directions and had a real hit:

1. Make it "Hot Sweat". It's the perfect, modern companion to "Cold Sweat" by James Brown.

2. Or leave the title as "Black Sweat", but rotate through different colors in each round of the chorus: black sweat, white sweat, blue sweat, yellow sweat. That makes it kind of fun and dreamy.

In the US, the shortest title of a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 is Britney Spears' "3" from 2009.

Prior to that, there were several number one hits with three letters in the title; "War," "Low," "SOS"...Michael Jackson sang lead on three different ones: "Ben," "Bad," and "ABC".

Prince's shortest number one song title is "Kiss," of course.
