Prince recorded a song with Holly Robinson Peete???

http://www.youtube.com/wa...Bp6ZlCwlh8

Holly Robinson Peete was on Wendy Williams today and revealed that after singing the title song to Hanging With Mr. Cooper, Prince called and invited her to Minneapolis to record a song called "Holly Don't Care".

Langebleu I am SO surprised: I didn't know u to be cynical eek eek eek

Anyway the information revealed here is important because the Princevault page doesn't mention such a version. There's the original that was intended for Tevin, then Mayte's and now we know there's one with Holly on vocals that needs to be added to the entry.

But when is it from?

If P and Mayte were ABOUT to be married it can't be too early, it means 1995, at which point the song had already been attributed to Mayte under the "Baby" title. Or maybe she's got it wrong about the date, in which case it could be any time between the moment Tevin turned it down and the moment it was given to Mayte.

I think I recall once hearing of Prince and HPR collaborating, but it could very well be I'm imagining that. Dude has worked with sooooo many people and so many rumors are out there... Wishing all copies of Uptown and The Prince Family and other fanmags were digitized and searchable, and that there were archives of the online news sites... Ugh, so much data is just locked up in paper archives and personal HDs etc. If only Prince hadn't been such a total ass, we could have had so many nice things.

Okay--if it was after she did the theme for the show, they used her song (according to Wikipedia) during season one (and other songs for later seasons). Season one began showing in September of 1992. So it could have been as early as then, or maybe a little earlier (Prince could have become aware of her recording it, or the fact that she was able--as much as necessary--to sing). If so, that would be consistent with the idea that the original title was Holly Don't Care--more likely than that he did a track with Tevin with that name already, and conveniently revampled it for her only later. Prince could have re-purposed the thing as early as the next day after working with Peete (heck, he could have decided to do it while recording), and then worked on it for Tevin after that. Do we know that Tevin did the first version? Has it been heard? Or does it just appear in session notes as being recorded during the same period? Or what?

I suspect that her involvement pre-dates Tevin's being offered the song, or runs close to his working on it; I doubt that it really matters much that she said that Prince was "about to be married to Mayte." Mayte was already a presence (and clearly a romantic interest) in late 1992, so why would Peete actually know that they didn't actually get married for a few more years (not being close to Prince, but just having met him and not continuing as a friend after this). I'm guessing (unless I'm shown otherwise) that this is the original (apart from maybe a Prince vocal), and that it was offered to Tevin only later (though maybe not much later).

I was saying thank you for the information and pointing to the Princevault page relating to the song.

The information will be used to update the page where relevant.

I doubt Mayte was in a position to ask a woman WTF she's doing here before at the very least mid 1994. In 1992 she was still the new kid on the block, and Prince is known to have been involved with other women (Carmen, Nona) as far as 1994.

Actually it sounds SO MUCH like Prince, IMHO, to jump on the opportunity to have a famous Holly sing a song about a Holly. I can easily see him seeing her on TV and thinking "hey, I have that track Tevin turned off, let's have a real "Holly" sing "Holly Don't Care", and then call her the next day lol lol lol

I can easily see him seeing her on TV and thinking "hey, I have that track Tevin turned off, let's have a real "Holly" sing "Holly Don't Care", and then call her the next day lol lol lol

But she only mentions Mayte in response to Wendy's prompting--it's not part of the core story. It's banter, a way to try to make it interesting and add a little bit of drama. I don't take it very seriously as a report of "fact," anymore than I do most of what people say on talk shows. The reference to an obscure song by what is already known to be its original title doesn't sound like something made up on the fly. Also, the whole "Holly don't, Holly don't, Holly don't, Holly don't really care" is such an awkward and silly sounding idea for a chorus (repeating "Baby don't" isn't great, but it's certainly better and easier to sing). That Prince might make up a substandard track (or a rough imperfect lyric) and go to the trouble of having someone record it (maybe just to keep her occupied and in his presence for a couple hours and allow him to attempt to work his seductive magic)--that's an idea I can believe. But that Prince would keep reworking the "Holly Don't Care" version of the song for years before realizing that Baby sounds so much better (or even use that version of the line without it being "forced" on him).

Obviously, I could be wrong. But since I'm just making this up for my own consumption, and not attempting to provide a source of information for others--I certainly understand going with a less speculative reconstruction of the chronology. Certainly the idea that it was for Tevin first is possible, and the reference to Holly was already there. But I prefer to believe this scenario:

That girl's cute. I like what I'm seeing. Let's see... her name's Holly. I got this song I'm not quite through with. Let's record her her, see what happens... let's see, need some words... this'll do.

Man, this is terrible. Glad I didn't call an engineer in to hit record. Ah, well... hey, "baby" works better. I'll wipe these vocals and fix it up.

But I still want to know what the source is for the "Tevin version." Is it something people have heard or is it a title from some session list, or has someone specifically talked about recording it with his vocals, or what? I assume it's discussed in The Vault, but I don't know if it tells the basis for saying there is a Tevin version and dating it--or if Princevault is using another source in addition to The Vault, where does that information come from? Can anyone (maybe you, Langebleu) answer that question?

It's from The Vault book indeed.

These sessions for Tevin are really well documented so it's likely that some engineers or NPG musicians were interviewed by Per Nielsen and gave these infos. Either Leeds or Bliss also gave detailed recording dates for the horns. Of course we'll never know for sure but unless proven wrong I really trust infos provided by Uptown, Nielsen and by extension Princevault. As for your guesses regarding how "Holly" sounds much badder than "Baby", that could be debated till the end of time but honestly I don't find one to sound better than the other lol

Okay, cool. I've got The Vault, but I've never managed to read it--I ordered it about the same time that they either ran out or gave up at Uptown (one or the other) and never actually received it, and then when it became otherwise available I grabbed it (but I had paid for it, so I don't feel that bad about it)--but I just can't manage to read it on a screen (and currently it's on a flash drive somewhere).

I have it digital too, I missed it back then because I was completely broke when released and it was OOP before I knew it. I haven't read it entirely yet, I'm waiting to finish my online discography and then I'll go thru the whole book as proofreading. The good thing is that u can use the search function (Crtl F) thru the PDF so when I need a specific info I can look for it smile

I still have many of those Uptown mags in my basement. Maybe even a few The Prince Family ones... I remember I printed basically all pages from early 90s fan sites.

(Ik heb ringmappen vol met uitgeprinte teksten en artikels)

How can I digitalize them without doing something wrong ?
Ok, I can scan every page. But don't know where to put them up here, or send them to someone who can use it...
Love to help on that one.
