Happy Tears

Besides 'She Gave Her Angels' are there any songs that was known to be on the album? It's one of my favourite Prince songs ever and I'm really curious as to what the rest of the album would have sounded like.

Happy Tears. It was supposed to be an album of children's songs I believe and the song 'She Gave Her Angels' which I think is really beautiful was supposed to be on it. Then, I think it was cancelled when his kid died.

There was supposed to be 8 songs on the album and it was to be released with a children's storybook.

Uh, okay, now that you mention it, I remember Prince wanting to do a children's album at the birth of his child sad but I don't know if he ever made a whole album. I agree that She Gave Her Angels is a beautiful piece of music.

"Don't Talk 2 Strangers" and "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do" are two beautiful songs that I interpret as "children songs", both of us are like messages from a father or a mother to a son. I love these songs, they show Prince's most sensitive side.

I always thought She Gave Her Angels was supposed to be on Emancipation

Yeah, they're both beautiful songs. Don't Talk 2 Strangers was originally meant for a different movie to the one it appeared on, but I suppose it could have been considered for the album. Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do wouldn't have been recorded yet but it is a beautiful song none the less, my favourite from Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic.

Apparently it was kept from Emancipation to be included on the Happy Tears album.

I always presumed Starfish & Coffee (the remade version) was also for this project, as both were showcased on the child-friendly Muppets Tonight.

Prince and Mayte: Happy Tears

With the pregnancy of Prince's then-wife Mayte Garcia, Prince was inspired to make and announce a children's music album called Happy Tears, credited to Prince and Mayte. The album was supposed to have been released on November/1996. The album was going to include a book of children's stories with it, also credited to Prince and Mayte. To promote the album, Prince guest-starred on the show Muppets Tonight, and performed the only song confirmed that would have been included on the album, "She Gave Her Angels", which remained unreleased until inclusion on the "Crystal Ball" set. The album was likely cancelled due to Prince's son's death one week after birth.

“And now I’d like 2 turn your heart
2 a tale of sheer delight
A song of adulation, love and fear
No one loved him better
No one better sacrificed
She gave her angels that summer night

Fate as she designed it
Took her from her man
Destiny and love don’t always go hand in hand
As the world lay waiting
Like an embryo in a womb
She gave her angels that night in June

She gave her angels 2 her man
Because her man had none
2 watch over him ’til he returned…
Her man, her lover, her son, her father
4 all these things he meant 2 her
She felt it right
She gave her angels that summer night”

Happy Tears is a multimedia project announced on 1 April, 1996 during a press release focusing on Mayte's pregnancy.

The project was to be credited to " and Mayte", which would have marked the first release credited to both artists, and was planned to include an album of songs on CD, and accompanying children's storybook and a read-along cassette of the book's stories. At the time of the press release, eight songs were included on the album, along with three children's stories in the accompanying book, all featuring multi-racial characters.

While may have planned songs for a children's album in advance of Mayte's pregnancy, it is probable that the eight songs planned for the album were recorded in late February or March, 1996, between and Mayte's marriage and the announcement of her pregnancy.

The only song confirmed for the album was She Gave Her Angels (which was later released on Crystal Ball). It is also possible that the 1995 re-recording of Starfish And Coffee was planned for inclusion on the album, however; both tracks were lip-synched during 's appearance on The Muppets Tonight TV show recorded in September, 1996, which was planned to coincide with the project's release (the show was cancelled before 's appearance was aired, although it was later aired in several countries).

The project was cancelled when and Mayte's son died from complications caused by Pfeiffer Syndrome a week after his birth on 16 October, 1996.

The Muppets' special guest 20px-Prince_symbol.svg.png (also known as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince) visits the show, while Sal takes a correspondence course to become a bone doctor.

Elsewhere, in New York City, Statler and Waldorf look at a big screen advertisement for Muppets Tonight. Statler says that the show was ten times as big, while Waldorf says that it's too bad the show is one tenth as funny. When the pair try changing the channel, they have problems with a big remote.

Be My Mirror, She Gave Her Angels, A Place in Heaven and a rerecorded Starfish and Coffee... this sounds like it would have been a great album.
