BOOM - do U like ?

absolutely love this song and was wondering what others thought of it - I find it takes me away and is one of my favourite Prince songs ever - even if I still here Canapés instead of canopy at the end razz

What if another universe, complete with sun and moon
An entire galaxy and what's worse, U and eye 2 soon
Find each other expanding beyond this dirty room
Butterscotch mountains, sunshine

Run your fingers up and down the obelisk in the earth
Down to 33 rpms, where the primordial gives birth
Or else we lie neck high, U and eye in one another's ooze
Volcano magic, summertime

Everybody knows what happens when U worship from afar
The ebb and flow of angels dancing around the star

The answer's in the dark

celibate, mushroom, canopy

funkomatic

No, weak chorus, kind of cut and paste structure, stupid vocal effects...

Love it. Got goosebumps and a silly grin the first time I heard it. "This album is going to be great." And it was.

Just like Christopher Tracy's Parade, I never regarded this as an actual song that can stand on its own. Like Funkomatic said, there's no chorus, just two verses of dreamy lyrics written by a man who's been living with his head in the clouds way too long.
BUT...That does not mean I don't like it! The guitar playing is awesome! And so it sets the tone for the rest of the album: songwriting is unoriginal (the best tracks are basically covers) but the record is saved by Prince's skill as a guitar player. And the raw rock & roll sound is a nice change from the overproduced slick sound of most of his latest albums.

I felt the same. That album is one of my all time favourites. The only thing I would've liked more would be if "The Morning After" was on the physical release instead of "Crimson and Clover".

"Boom" is one of my top tracks on that album for sure.

mine too. but Crimson & Clover is a must-have for this album. one of the best tracks. I remember listening to the download version for a few days before the CD version was released, and Crimson & Clover being there instead of The Morning After was a definite improvement and filled in a gap that I felt was missing early in the tracklist with another guitar rocker.

Love it, and I actually LIKE the vocal effects on Boom. Lotusflow3r is the most recent Prince albums with very few missteps on it - a great listen from start to finish. I also like the inclusion of Crimson and Clover on the physical CD rather than The Morning After on the download version. The Morning After has more of a nice b-side feel to it than an album track feel - though I also at times think it has the sound of a Planet Earth track.

Boom - one of his very best studio tracks highlighting his guitar work, and one of the few times a studio track doesn't lose the energy you could picture from a live performance. The sexy, soupy, galactic feeling is just perfect on that album.

It was on an early configuration of 3121. But a lot of 3121, Planet Earth ant LotusFlower were recorded around the same time.

Actually, I now agree. I think 'Crimson & Clover' does fit better.

makes me happy most people seem to like it

Giovanni 777 - I always listen to the album with both crimson and clover and the morning after at numbers 3.0 and 3.5 smile - he should have included both on the physical release - it only runs at just over 50 minutes that way anyway !

SuperSoulFighter - when you say 'just two verses of dreamy lyrics written by a man who's been living with his head in the clouds way too long.' Those are my favorite kind of Prince lyrics ! We all need a little heads in the clouds thinking now and then in this big old bad world !

The song is brilliant... but sadly the chorus, in case you are generous enough to admit it really has one, is very weak. This happens to Prince a lot lately. I see the same problem on the best songs of 20ten and on "Fixurlifeup"; all of them would be awesome songs if only the chorus was as strong as the rest of the tune.

Oh yes, you're right. I have no problem with dreamy/surreal lyrics. (I like Kate Bush and Bob Dylan!) but I included the "too long" part because I lose track of what Prince is talking about in these lyrics. You should always have at least one foot left on the ground. Prince's lyrics just don't make sense to me anymore. I never have that problem with the two other artist I mentioned. And of course as long as the music is good, it's not really a problem, but still... I listen to this and I think, what IS he on about? confuse

Totally agree with you there. It is if writing a chorus is too much trouble. It's as if he's not really putting enough effort in writing really good songs, but is satisfied with writing half-finished ones and then move on to the next. Sometimes I wish Prince was a little bit more like Leonard Cohen, who took a year to write Hallelujah.
