I too think that Prince said, "I played "The Cross"..." Even for a Twin Cities guy, Lacrosse Wisconsin is a pretty obscure reference. It doesn't directly coorelate to mean "rock music."

This has got to be the dumbest thread on this board. If you listen to the whole interview he is talking about Lacrosse Wisconsin and being able to perform in front of white audiences during pop and rock music. I honestly wonder about some of you.

I have this interview on an old cassette tape. He is discussing being able to cross genres and using La Crosse as an example of a place he has performed. Do you really think in the middle of this conversation he is discussing the sport of Lacrosse? I mean honestly how thick is your head if you cannot pull anything out of the context of the conversation.

Last time I checked my IQ was 121.

How can u have a recording of this interview? I thought P didn't allow his magazines interviews to be recorded?

I never suggested it was sports, I didn't even know such a sport existed before starting this thread, I just asked what the fuck it was or meant because in the context of the interview as featured in the article (and not some tape taken out of some magician's hat) it makes very little sense, and then when people mentioned it the sports made as much sense as an obscure town popping out of nowhere in the middle of an interview anyway. Still, I never jumped on anyone's conclusions or suggestions but I'm glad so many nice people tried to help.

Now if this tape exists and the recording is more explicit than the written article, then I thank you for clarifying this but please allow me to add that there was very little need for being ill-mannered while doing it. And may I suggest u post this interview tape on the internet so the whole world could benefit from your exceptionnal wisdom?

The interview was conducted by the Electric Mojo on a Detroit radio station after Prince performed his birthday show in Detroit in 1986. Since the interview was Prince phoning in live to the radio program it was recorded no doubt by a quick thinking fan. I am sure that these interviews getting out as boots is the very reason P does not let the media record to this day.

The interview has been circulating as a boot since the early 90s.

It was up on YOUTUBE a few months ago. If you listen to the entire interview he is discussing being able to cross genres of music and speaking about being able to play Detroit and as well La Crosse. He may have even mentioned that the city was in Wisconsin but it is really about hearing the whole interview and the exchange between him a MOJO who was a huge fan of the Minneapolis scene and their discussion about the music.

You cannot get the flow of the conversation by reading the interview you have to hear it.

I did not say you suggested it was sports but other people suggested it and it is a bit absurd.

There's also no way he ever played lacrosse--at least, no more than I've participated in archery (like, maybe in a physical education class in high school)--and that's hardly worth bringing up to contrast himself with a Dublin band that also has never played lacrosse.

And why not (as far as LaCrosse) is because he played in a little cover band that seems (from all available testimony by anyone else around at the time) to have never gotten out of a very small circle of Twin Cities venues. As for his own band after his contract--that's all pretty well documented, and readily available.

So--can we all agree that Prince is full of it here, that La Crosse is not meant to be taken completely literally, and that the point is that he's two or three or four or five bands and U2 is just one?

Of course we can't. wink

That's 2 different interviews, then. But if P mentionned La Crosse in both interviews, 4 years apart from each other, I guess he was trying to make a serious point there lol

Thx 4 clarifying smile

All right then--now we've got something pretty close to confirmation that it's the city that's in Prince's mind, and that La Crosse clearly represents something consistent to him.

I'll have to see about the interview.

falloff at those who think there are all these mysterious levels in the selection of La Crosse, Wisconsin as an example of how Prince could bring in rural audiences.

Some of y'all really need to check yourselves. I know, and I love, that Prince has all kinds of double-entendres, hidden meanings, goofy symbols, etc. But look - not everything the guy says is shrouded in nine layers of consciousness.

He used La Crosse the second time because he remembered he'd used it the first time to make the same point.

I do not think he is full of it. I think taking your comments into consideration he meant it figureally and not literally enough so he felt the need to make this comment in two separate interviews.

Have you ever been to LaCrosse? I guaran-damn-tee you he has never played there. lol

Where do you think he would have played? His first album came out when he was 19. That means he could have played in a bar for (maybe) a few months before it came out. (The drinking age was 18 then - and he would have had to be of age to be employed in a bar.) How long did he spend in California recording For You?

prince was working the ethnicity of the american indian sport of la crosse into his music because he has always loved the simple native harmonies of the plains indians who once lived off the land that is now minneapolis.

--------- Yes, If you listen to the MOJO interview it is obvious what he means by LaCrosse, Wisconsin. If you read this interview he sure in hell is not talking about the sport. I think if you read the entire topic we have come to the conclusion that he meant it figuratively and not literality.

I think he is referring to the song "The Cross". A song he probably wrote at a young age judging from it's most basic chord simplicity and classic rock sound, and the fact that U2's similar chord-ed song that was also featured in the hit movie and album Rattle and Hum was out there and they were ate a huge popularity surge, and beat out SOTT at the Grammy's. I thought that back when I read the interview in the magazine.

Its seems like La Crosse would be really an obscure reference. But I guess it's possible he was dropping this with no context in the Rolling Stone interview.
