"It's against the Law in 13 states, what I am going to do to you..."

Does anyone know what Prince is referring to by this line in the outtake, TURN ME LOOSE? Is it a religious reference regarding what is against the "Law" in 13 states? And who do you think the song might be referring to?

*

Interestingly, according to PrinceVault, "there is some evidence that the song was intended for an unreleased 2008 album which would also include F.U.N.K." Listening to it again, I can hear a nice musical similarity in passages between the 2 songs, aside from the fact they are both insanely funky grooves. It is a shame neither featured on an album, not even Lotus Flower.

*

But I digress; is there any information regarding what the evidence is regarding an unreleased album in 2008 and/or what the unreleased album might have contained - for example, is this the so-called AndrogyNine album project? Pure speculation on my part, but F.U.N.K. does appear to feature vocals by that once infamous androgynous-like character, previously known as Camille.

*

Thanks,

Otter

There's no actual evidence that that album existed: Someone on here offered that speculation based on their belief that the backdrop used on Leno when Prince premiered this song looked like an album cover. This theory was quickly taken as fact, despite nothing to back it up every coming to light.

As for the refrence in the lyrics, I've always assumed he meant anal sex.

Pretty sure Prince has been pushing the boundaries of what is "allowed" as a JW for a long time now.

Just a touch extreme, though, even for Prince? I mean, c'mon?

Mindflux, I am surprised that he might openly sing about it, especially as a JW. Has he ever talked about it before?

It doesn't mean anything more or less than this from "Extraloveable":

"You got a dozen little sexy tricks

That a dozen cities in this U.S.

Won't even allow"

I doubt that he has anything particular in mind in either case--just a vague "you're/I'm a freak, baby" type of statement. I'm sure it wouldn't help to try to look into the laws regarding sexual behavior in the myriad American jurisdictions--it might be entertaining, but Prince is just throwing numbers and levels of government around willy-nilly, I think.

LOL. What I'm saying is that it's just a lyric. It rhymes with the other lyrics. It's cute and pompous.

It probably isn't referring to any specific acts or any 13 specific states.

He has openly and discreetly sung about sex his entire career, JW or not. Even on Rainbow Children, his ode to becoming a JW contains the lyric "Wet circles around the toy, whilst you bring yourself to joy" - a not that subtle reference to the girl masturbating in front of him, which would be shocking to any serious JW (or most other religions, for that matter).

Whilst it is open to interpretation, I think it is wrong to dismiss any lyric by any serious artist as just being something that was used to rhyme with little or no meaning. I don't believe that to be true of any of Prince's work. It's highly likely that he is singing about anal or some other lewd act, but Prince almost always gives it more than one possible meaning. But I don't think you can say it's "just a lyric" - words are powerful and important especially when commited to a recording and Prince knows this.

Mindflux, I understand and I agree. I am just somewhat taken aback. In terms of routine practice, surely anal sex is considered far more on the extreme end of the continuum than mere masturbation? Furthermore, I thought JW were interested in accurate understanding of God's truth, scripturally. Is sodomy not considered unaccaptable, as outlined in the Bible? Surely, he knows he is playing with an ultra sensitive and sinful subject, especially given his stance to remove prior lewd/obscene words and acts from his recorded or performed music e.g. Darling Nikki. So, he censors/almost entirely erases Darlin Nikki from his catalogue because of the masturbation scene, but includes references to anal sex in a new song. Contradiction, much?

Possibly. Remember 'Love or Money'?

Funny thing is, that I was so young when I heard that 12" 'Love Or Money', I was puzzled by what he meant.

Prince has written a whole lot of deep, meaningful lyrics. But that doesn't mean that EVERY lyric he's ever written has profundity attached to it.

Remember - this is a song touting Prince's relationship skills with a certain woman. I don't think he'd be telling her stuff meant to change the world whilst clueing her in on the experience she's about to receive.

Is she about to receive the experience (or Prince)? The song is called Turn "Me" Loose, after all?

And we've all seen the Daddy Pop/Game Boyz performance...

Cute anecdote, Giovanni. It's funny when you think about the things we didn't realise growing up listening to P's lyrics...

Besides, good lyrics are not always deep lyrics. It's a clever, fun song--something many "deep" lyricists couldn't write.

"I can't find the adjectives enough to say

I'm so glad you're my baby...okay"

is one of my favorites. It doesn't say anything deep--unless you want to argue it's about the limits of art or some sort of foolishness. But it's an artist playing in his art. Which is something I really like, and which Prince is often doing.
