Baby Knows and My Computer are not duets. The Arms Of Orion is a duet. See the difference? Sheryl and Kate are just gust background vocalists here, the same way Chaka was a guest background vocalist on Come On. + Kate's presence on My Computer was motivated by the fact that the song is P's 90's answer to Kate's "Deeper Understanding".

Yes, I certainly see and understand the difference. I misspoke (er...mistyped?) and apologize for not being clear. Duet or guest background vocalist, I still think that burying these guest vocalists in the mix negates the whole purpose of putting them on the track in the first place, which (at least in the case of Sheryl and Gwen) was clearly to expand P's fanbase. Gwen you can actually hear, whereas Sheryl and Kate are hard to make out at all, unless you are specifically listening for them.

Like I said, I love "My Computer," but a friend of mine who is a huge Kate Bush fan got all excited a couple months ago when he read that there was a Prince song with Kate on it. I played it for him, and his response was, "Are you sure this is the right song? I don't hear her at all."

Thanks for your critique of each track, Blueangel. Interesting to read. Databank, you know I'd never really thought of the thematic connection between 'Deeper Understanding' and 'My Computer', which goes to show how shallow I am. :-) You're so right, however. I do rather think Kate's song blows 'My Computer' out of the water and then buries the shrapnel. However, I was thrilled when they 'collaborated', although they never physically even met.

It's true, at first I was also wondering where she was when I listened 2 it 4 the first time. The funny thing, though, is that once u've caught her u can't hear anything but her on that chorus. But maybe that's because I'm a massive KB fan as well, so I really dig what her voice brings 2 that song.

Agreed! I definitely hear her on there now. And my friend (who is also a massive KB fan) probably would too, if he would ever let me play it for him again. I have to slip my Prince tracks into his playlists very carefully and on the sly. wink

Wow, I love how diverse all of our tastes are. I feel essentially the exact opposite...to me it seems like everything after the first track is a letdown. I mean, that raw, aggressive falsetto he uses - and those bizarre, 80s flavored lyrics!!! (Brother playin', Apache scarf, Gaultier, STOP! --- ah, such goodness).

And then to follow that with Undisputed (where man that NPG is gettin' OH SO ROWDY NOW), The Greatest Blah Blah Blah and Hot Wit U? Yikes. Just doesn't fit at all.

Maybe one day he will release some fun, never-heard before late 80s outtakes and Rave will fit in perfectly with them, and some fun, never-heard before late 90s outtakes and you can use one of them as the opener for RU2TJF ... and we will both be happier for it!

Here's how I tell the difference: Baby Knows makes me want to vomit bile, whereas So Far, So Pleased makes me feel pleasantly bored.

maybe the song would be more interesting if it were called "Baby Nose", it could be a song about barry manilow.
