Didn't know it was biblical.

I just agree with it.

What if we would only use what we really need?

devil gives us what we want ..God gives us what we need

I like that line

Javi, you're right, but when someone repeats the same message "be yourself, do what you want and everybody will be happy" year after year then it becomes a cliche. And I find that message to be a bit superficial. I don't expect Prince, or any other rock star, to solve all the problems in the world, but I do expect a writer to keep coming up with original thoughts. And I cannot say that about FixUrLifeup. As Imago said, U need 2 fix Ur songs up! [Edited 9/9/13 10:38am]

I don't think it's that superficial.

My favorite is this one. And it's not shallow.

Instead of everybody getting what they want
They can get what they need

No, it's a Rolling Stones ripp-off.

Yes you do.

Eventhough I did see the Stones, I'm not that familiar with their body of work. Sorry.

I understand they are legendary, but my parents just did not play their music a lot. And I never got into them myself, because they just look so old and unhealthy to me.

Very sorry about that.

I'm only familiar with their hits.

Good point. It's a Christian concept. And your comment made me realise now that this song reminds me of Christian rock, just like LOL which is (among other things) a slogan for christian believers.

...every night another symphony...

What song?

"You can't always get what your want"

It's not a ripoff -- it's a reference. Another one? "Another brick in the wall of noise" -- yup, Pink Floyd.

The break, with the "just worry about..." and especially "don't make this complicated. you know it's true", gets on my nerves just a bit because I'm that way, but otherwise this is near perfect rock song, three minutes of high voltage that sounds and feels urgent.

You don't want Prince to explain his philosophy in detail, he's a guy you want behind a mike stand with a guitar in his hands, not behind a pulpit. He did some preachy rants during the One Night Alone gigs and before that with Larry Graham -- no pulpit for Prince please!

The way he does it in Fixurlifeup is as much as he should ever do in a song if he wants to keep appealing. The "self-help" accusation is weak. Love, sex and empowerment are constant themes in rock, pop, hip hop, etc. it's not going to change because lyrics/raps are about affirmation -- affirming your love, your desire and yourself are basic reason for writing songs since forever now.

I agree with your post, very interesting points.

Also, regarding the music, I agree that it's "near perfect" -near, in my opinion, because the chorus is somewhat lazy and not as good as the rest of the song.

While Prince makes funky music and dates fine women

Your definition of `fine` might be different from mine.

What type of women dates a (former) rock star?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
