The NPG concept

Lovesexy was my first Prince album and, as we all know, the first time we heared the term "New Power Soul/Generation". It was confusing and intriguing at the same time. What did it mean? "New Power" seemed to be the opposite of "Spooky Electric", in other words, good vs evil. But still, it was a bit vague. Who was this "New Power Generation"? All of his listeners?
Then came Graffiti Bridge which had a song (one of the better ones) where he did some explaining. The "New Power Generation" want to change the world (into what?) but old folks stand in its way. Nothing new about that, it's a sentiment that has been around in rock & roll since the 1960s.
Then he named his band NPG and ever since then it's been the name for an ever (r)evolving group op musicians, but still, Prince seems to have this term mean something more than that. As if all of us belong to "The New Power Generation" simply by listening to him.
So what do U think? Does the term "New Power Generation" mean anything? Or is it just "whomever is in Prince's band at any given time?

In his mind, it is some form of ultimate higher consciousness connection between musician and audience, hence, when both are at one with each other, "you are now a member of the new power generation, welcome to the dawn."

It's just some vaguely spiritual horse shit to make himself feel better about who he is and what he does, which is being a pop star.

I was excited hearing Lovesexy that he was going to create a new genre of music, something that would synthesize his vision of music, incorporating disparate elements of rock, soul, funk, jazz, etc. Such a revolution of sound never really materialized, but he has continued to create in various genres and that's a good thing. All these years later it seems a revolving door of musicians have played unfer that moniker. I don't think a "concept" ever gelled. He should have just kept the Revolution band name.

A marketing ploy. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I see it as Prince's way of explaining his always looking ahead, never looking back. I wouldn't dare to say more than this, the whole thing is too blurred.

At the the end of the Gold Experience, someboday says that 'you are now a part of the New Power Generation' so I guess we're all involved somehow smile

Pretty much what was said above, a spiritual movement of sorts P is supposeded to create in his own mythos, I'm fine with that, that mythos always was attractive to me and still is wink

As for naming a band after that IDK, it kinda reduced the concept in the end. The label I can understand, but the band?

Ad for keeping that name for his band for 22 years IDK either, I don't really care, he could have played it like Bill Laswell who gets a new name for every combo he plays with but in the end it's just as absurd because it's still Bill Laswell behind it. Now that P came-up with a new concept with 3EG I first thought he'd find another name for the jazz/funk combo but in the end it's still the NPG and 3EG is more to be seen like a side-project à la Madhouse.

I remember after Graffiti Bridge came out, the music made me want to be a part of this NPG. He should have started a fan club at that moment and we could have all become members of the NPG. Kind of like a better version of the KISS Army. Now all it seems to be is a revolving door of musicians in his current band.
