Make a track list for the PERFECT Prince album. Just a little game I think will be fun to play where basically you craft your perfect Prince album of 10-15 tracks. Of course you can include unreleased tacks. I'm interested to see whether or not peoples perfect album is simply a collection of his best songs, or if the flow and concept of an album is more important. I need time to think so i'll post mine in a reply
P.S. I don't want this to be just a 'top 10 favourite songs' thread [Edited 8/28/13 16:09pm] I got two sides... and they're both friends.

The hits have been done already so I'd just release an album of not so well know gems with a few favourites thrown in, 5 from each Decade.

so do i, so do i
although in the spirit of this thread i guess if there was anything i could change about parade (which is the perfect album imo) it would probably be to include "old friends 4 sale" (the original version) on it, perhaps instead of "do u lie?" - but it's the perfect album as it is, for me. . also, creating the perfect prince album out of all the tracks he's ever released is very hard for me because somehow it just doesn't work for me. it can be a nice mixed tape or such but as an album, a song from 1981 isn't going to sit very nicely next to a song from 2009. it just doesn't work. tracks from certain periods only work well next to oneanother. like perhaps Gold/Come tracks, those can be mixed quite nicely. or "Sign o The Times" and "Black Album" or "Camille" tracks. but not "Dirty Mind" and "Lotusflower" tracks for instance. so that's why i can't play the game. . ok, my silly rant is over now, i'm sorry

I think you're gonna start a snowballing effect by including the segued song "All My Dreams" into the album as well but I understand where you driving at.
To me, the PERFECT tracklist album was the original/final configuration of the infamous triple "Crystal Ball" album that never was. I arranged a playlist based on the order of the songs, as documented by Per Nilsen - I'm showing my fandom here - and I just shake my head in amazement everytime I listen to it, imagine what could've happened if WB didn't play is safe and gave in to his crazy whim it would've put a diving line between his audience, once again, I gather.

Totally understand what you mean. I was going to say disregard recording quality when making a list to make things easier. For example, Extralovable could be in your perfect album, despite the quality of the bootleg. As for tracks being incompatible, I would again put a lot down to the quality of recording and equipment available at the time, more than the songs themselves. I believe that if, for example, Erotic City was recorded with what is available today it would sound perfectly up to date. I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Another orger has foreseen it, but I can't help saying it: "All My Dreams" should have been on Parade. And "Old Friends" too. But anyway, the album is perfect as it is. [Edited 8/29/13 5:03am]

Also, I would be tempted ever so slightly to perhaps include ALEXA DE PARIS, perhaps after Venus De Milo and before Mountains. It stylistically fits the "movement" that is Parade supremely well. But, of course, I am quibbling yet again on non-essential matters, best reserved for a DELUXE boxset of the Under The Cherry Moon era, complete with the movie in HD and other delights, including the outtakes Old Friends 4 Sale, Others Here With Us and Heaven, as well as the extended versions of Kiss, Mountains and Anotherloverholenyohead, not to mention a live DVD complete performance of an essential Parade era concert. As a sneak preview into what was to come, I would quite like it if the Parade era warm up gig was to also be included, all 3 hours of it...

Sticking to the non-hits concept, and in no particular order:
Crystal Ball If I Was Ur Girlfriend The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker Anotherloverholenyohead Sexuality Lady Cab Driver Head Erotic City Wasted Kisses (in a better produced version, if possible: those drum sounds are horrible! ) Scandalous A Million Days Rock Hard In A Funky Place The Question Of U Bambi All My Dreams [Edited 8/30/13 0:12am] RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

That would've of been one hell of an album! You can totally include songs that would be considered hits if you think your perfect Prince album needs them I just want people to think about the order and flow of the album instead of simply listing their 10-15 favourite songs. I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Yeah, all killer no filler!
I liked the non-hit concept: just an album full of top Prince album cuts that would make a great collection to listen to. I think this would also make a great list to win over new Prince fans, without having to use the "obvious" hits. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

not 'the perfect prince album' but a little project i'd been trying out lately. i find these tracks to segue very nicely and they all 'fit' somehow. . since prince was working on the Lotusflower album for a long time and several tracks that are from the sessions of songs that ended up on 3121 and Planet Earth, i think these songs somehow really feel connected: . very cliche, i've named it "The Lotus Experience" . CD 1: 01. From The Lotus..... 02. Boom 03. Crimson & Clover 04. All The Midnights In The World 05. Colonized Mind 06. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful 07. F.U.N.K. 08. Love Like Jazz 09. 77 Beverly Park 10. Reflection . CD 2: 01. 3121 02. Wall Of Berlin 03. $ 04. Somewhere Here On Earth 05. Lion Of Judah 06. The Morning After 07. 4Ever 08. The Word 09. Dreamer 10. .... Back 2 The Lotus . and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Quite brilliant, Isten. I think that would have been an apt description of the realities surrounding all those sessions and a well thought out and assembled collation of songs which really do seem to flow nicely. Obviously, you have favoured the more natural, organic, sounding songs from those sessions, in which case I would possibly also suggest a surprisingly often overlooked song (which I believe you in fact despise): CHELSEA RODGERS. It might segue nicely either before or after $ on Side 2, It was clearly a song Prince considered reasonably important during those sessions, given that he released a video for it, performed it live and clearly at least attempted to perfect it on record. It is perhaps worth another visit, even if you do still absolutely hate it. Another often overlooked gem is, dare I say it, "MR GOODNIGHT, which namechecks many of those session era songs, as well as the 3121 theme. The instrumentation is in fact lush and I find the lyrics and vocal delivery something of a guilty pleasure of mine. It might also fit on Side 1 after FUNK, although I personally would also include one of my favourite vocal performances alongside it, namely FUTURE BABY MAMA. Thus, the sequence might become Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful, F.U.N.K., Future Baby Mama, Mr Goodnight, Love Like Jazz etc. I must say, I particularly like your inclusion of THE MORNING AFTER. Overall, bravo.

Also, I have always felt PLANET EARTH could also make a rousing closer to an album like yours, Isten. In your sequence, I would place it nicely after The Word. Thus, we end your album with three important, personally themed, spiritual, deep songs of his from that entire era, namely The Word, Planet Earth and Dreamer. I can just imagine the brilliant guitar flourishes that end Planet Earth beautifully seguing into Dreamer.
