Shades of Umbres (New Prince tune)

The NPG played a new tune written by Prince which is largely instrumental. According to Dr. Funkenberry the music is jazzy and illustrates Prince's jazz arrangements. This is interesting. It just seems like Prince is having a genre mid year crisis: 3RD EYE GIRL (rock outfit), NPG (soul/funk outfit) back to jazz.

Could you link us to Funkenberry talking about this song, please?

Also during the spreecast, Andrew Gouche briefly talked about "Shades of Umbre" and how it took the band several days to learn the music.

Yes, it was real nice song, well-played by the NPG band. The song had many instrumental changes.. The NPGHornz did a good job with it. Really enjoyed their performance tonight. That song could have been on the C-Note album, if Prince had written it around that time.Would be cool if he releases it for purchase.

Yes it seems like he can't really make up his mind! Rock this time, pop next time, jazz another time...

I think dipping into multiple genres allows him to keep his creative juices running.

Nooo, he's not in a crisis. He IS music. Facilitating several genres. I mean next tour he might as well spread out songs based on N.E.W.S. explorations.

Anyway, in the other thread (http://prince.org/msg/7/399859) I was telling that:

I was just listening, I mean really listening to the Montreux set. And enjoying Shades Of Umber... WOW.This is what Jazz Festivals are about. Pure showcasing what you are able of.The same with Footprints ~The World Is A Ghetto, the other year. And The Jam (Aug 18th 1988). If it's not on an album, it's mostly worth an incredible single performance. It's a well over thought and neatly arranged piece of music, in several parts.First part it shuffles in, or 12/16, or quick waltz (luckily nobody starts clapping like they do sometimes along Satisfied)Then at 1 minute 40, lively sax à la Eric Leeds (we say Knorsax in Dutch) and the guitar leads it into 3 minutes 08, man this is Last December meets Miles Davis. And another eighties guitar solo. Backed by HOW MANY HORNS.5:12 next part, scale change. Nice. Back to the theme, more sequences. Trumpets. Why do I feel this could be as old as Alexa De Paris and All My Dreams?Still, Shades Of Umber seems like a secret when you search, apart from earth colours. And interesting work from someone. What are your thoughts on this tune?

The Vault indeed tells: Unidentified instrumental (possibly 'Shades Of Umber').Perhaps my fault to name this thread Shades Of Umber.Who is behind the Vault, who came up with the possible name Shades Of Umber, for this instrumental set filler?

Every now and then I play some Prince tunes from any audio source onto the home hifi set."Wat een blije James Last muziek is dit?" [What Kind Of Happy James Last Music Is This?] the misses proclaimed one night when I turned up this instrumental tune. biggrin James Last, he wished...

So, I will check out that one at doctorfunnyburgers fro

What do you mean it's not in the computer?

That's true, there's nothing like dabbling in genres in which one isn't particular proficient to get the juices flowing.

surely you didn't expect us to take that comment seriously right? even if not pure jazz (pure being a subjective point of view) Prince has always included this genre in his groove.

example: the instrumental jam in SOTT...Levi, Miko, Sheila, Leeds and Bliss demonstrated this

That's a Charlie Parker cover.
