Arsenio 1991- Daddy Pop Tv performance - skid error?

I don't think I call any non-guitar performance "great' but this is nonetheless a very impressive TV performance. I always wandered how Prince never injured his hands with all the front falls etc involved with the routine. That aside, at the very end of the song...he launches himself into a skid that ends up in the first row of shrieking ladies who proceed to paw him for a few moments before he races back off stage. My question is....do you think he meant to barrel in to them or did he simply under estimate the glide of the studio floor?

Going off memory - I think it's during this same performance that he lifted the top of the piano to let balloons fly out, and the top came plunging back down quicker than he expected, and he was extremely close to having it slam on his fingers.

As for the slide into the crowd, can't help you there.

Ummm, I've got another questions to ponder - who cares?!?!?!? That's a performance from 22 years ago and far more importantly, such a negligible and impossible question to answer?

This place is insane!!!

I think he meant to do it or he would have stopped. He's smart like that.

Only at the org would it be considered - the original poster's query is pretty normal for around here!!!

lol

exactly

it cracks me up and disturbs me that people take this place so seriously as if they make the rules or something

anyway, it reminded me of this performance that i thought was odd but also really good and i also thought he may have not intended to slide right into the crowd as well. i think i remember the piano almost closing as well and i remember something about a fire that he couldn't start during "the morning papers" but that may have been on another episode

I don't give two shits about any dodgy skid, but it's a great performance and kicks the arse out of the appearance in '93.

The "fire" incident was during My Name Is Prince, when he was on Arsenio in 1996. He was supposed to be burning Jon Bream's review of prince .

This live performance was better than the album version of the song.

As for the slide, I remember watching it. Seems like he lost control for a sec. lol

I was more concerned with the little dance he did with the Gameboyz. eek

Only Prince. confused
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

It was 1992 & it was a review for the "Love Symbol" album he burned up. The skid at the end of "Daddy Pop" seemed intentional IMO!!!!

What about when he landed on that woman at the Billboard awards? Did he plan that?

Oh, wait, they're telling me in my headphones that that was Miguel? Yes, we've confirmed that that was Miguel and not Prince.

Honestly, I don't remember the skid, and I don't think I've seen it since the broadcast (I might have it somewhere, but I don't know)--but it doesn't seem particularly insignificant or worth mocking as a topic. If it happened today, we would have talked a whole lot about it (as even people who don't know who Miguel even is did after his mess-up). I'd guess it was a mistake, just because he wasn't really interacting that directly with the crowd during that period, was he? He seemed to be too careful still--not as loose as he might be in a non-broadcast small intimate show a few years later--he would have not wanted to risk something unpredictable--like a bunch of women pawing him, and breaking the flow of the performance. Things were pretty choreographed at that time, right? And if other things were going wrong (if some people's memories are right), well, maybe he was just thrown off in general.

Of course, he planned that Gameboyz foolishness, so--who knows what he was thinking? biggrin

Actually, this was in 1993.

Taped on Feb. 23rd 1993, first broadcast on Feb. 25th 1993.

I think he planned the skid. What was up with that Gameboyz routine? It seemed like he was enjoying Kirk "pumping" him from behind a little too much to be innocent to me. Or maybe he was just fuckn with us. Nah, P would never fuck with his fan's expectations, would he?

I watched that performance over and over back then. It seems obviously on purpose. Kind of like crowd surfing is on purpose would take that even further. He was pulling all kinds of tricks and stunts on that night, interacting with the audience and the cameras.
