Who Is Prince Really? An In-Depth Conversation

Did anyone go to this in LA on Auguust 14th? There are some pictures online here, but I have not seen any video or text. Would love to know if anything new or interesting was said.

A group of Prince insiders and experts convene to dig into the legendary and enigmatic artist. Occasioned by the publication of Touré’s new book I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became An Icon, a deep look at Prince's music and life. It’s not a biography, it’s a deconstruction and appreciation of the artist bolstered by a candid interview with Prince in 1998 and interviews with many of Prince's band members and girlfriends as well as musicologists, and even Bible scholars. Please join us in the Clive Davis Theater as Touré, an MSNBC host and a longtime music journalist, talks with Prince insiders: Susannah Melvoin, a member of Prince's band the Revolution for several years, Alan Leeds, Prince's tour manager for over ten years; and LA Reid, the chairman and CEO of Epic Records.

Allthough I'm guilty of interpretating Prince his character on this board, so, I def. have no right to speak about this, this does come across as creepy. I guess, just like myself now and then.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Toure really got gassed after interviewing Prince ONE TIME and since then his head has balloned to think he is a PRINCE insider? I read the book "I Would Die 4 U" and Toure crossed the line when he wrote of unnamed sources from several ex girflriends of Prince's about how he was in the bedroom. This is beyond creepy and downright intrusive.

Also, I didn't like how Toure made so many presumptions about Prince's feelings and relationship with his mother. I felt like I was reading an author play pseudo shrink, analyzing Prince's relationship with his parents. Bottom line, after all of these books, we still don't know who Prince is. No amount of seconddary info from "Prince insiders" can change that until Prince reveals that stuff.

I do see your point but I'm not sure I agree, because from the description I honestly can't tell if the panel was about his music and process (which be interesting to get insight on) or something else. The people on the panel are not in the category of crazy ex-associates or those who were overly gossipy in the past so I'm hoping it was a conversation about Prince's music and cultural impact. Would love to know more.

I never read those books. I'll just stick with the org.

Knowing that no orger knows anything, and still fight about who can judge Prince & his music, is very entertaining.

At the org that is. It's not entertaining when it's published in a book.
