What happen to Prince's music?

Lets face it Prince hasnt had a Great Album since Love Smbol and hasnt had a Great song since Gold (IMO)... every thing he put out in the late 90's was awful ,just boring funk pop albums, the most plain jane stock funk you ever heard. both Musicology and 3121 were good but they werent fuck. On 3121 you could see hints of his old greatness but he didnt Quite Nail it...all the album's after that are awful!

Anyway I was starting to think maybe Prince is past it and should just give it up. but then i seen him live for the 1st time last year he blow me away it was like he hasnt losted a beat from the 80's and even his new stuff sounded great live ( jam of the year sucks on album but is really good live ,)it made me start to wonder why cant he bring some of the greatness form his live show to his Albums?

When ever I hear good new music from the likes of Frank Ocean and Kanye West , i'm like " dam why isnt Prince making ground breaking music like this any more"

Seriously, when Prince started hitting it big in the early 80s, don't you think there was some of this talk aimed at Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Sly Stone, even MJ?

Prince's peak was 30 years ago. He will never reach those heights again, and should he even try?

It's time for the next generation, just like Prince was a new generation for his time.

Do you still think Frank Ocean and Kanye West will still be making "groundbreaking music" in 35 years time?

I think motivation is an instrumental factor in Prince's studio work, in particular. If he's not quite making the grade, I am guessing it's more likely a consequence of the fact that it's been a long time since he's felt he has had something to really exorcise on record. Just look at The Rainbow Children, as but one example. Whatever one might make of the lyrics, there is no doubting that Prince was exorcising certain demons artistically and he made a serious point of letting everyone know. As far as I can tell, it was also the last album/era/tour (One Nite Alone) where he put all his eggs into one basket (standing firmly behind his new efforts) without relying heavily on past glories. So, all that said, I am guessing he'll come good (again), when he is feeling 'it', whatever the 'it' will be is anyone's guess. Of course, it doesn't help that the business model has fundamentally changed, such that he is no longer competing/evolving/pushing the boundaries via his studio/album work, so for the time being, I would suggest just taking this period/stage in Prince's work for what it is...a musician just finding his way, with all the nooks and crannies and lethargy that greets us all at more advanced stages of life. The fire in his belly was there at the right time, back when he was launching and establishing his musical career, and there was no mistaking that he was a formidable force to be reckoned with. Nowadays, he is in a different place, subjectively and objectively.

Congratulations: u've made the "prince is over and done" thread of the week, saying word for word (I love the "let's face it" and the "since The Gold Experience" parts lol ) what countless orgers have said before you! So before I fall asleep, let me suggest you try and say something new or go bore another forum to death. Peace wink

I dont want to get into good/bad or old/new debate other than to say some recordings do sound very sterile and I like it a bit more spontaneous.

I know what you are saying but...in my opinion if any new album is recorded live in front of an audience then released I think the material will be elevated to another level as I would be able to immediatly connect with it.

I can't see it though.

Great album are debatable but I think that most albums since Love Symbol have been better than that particular album.

I wouldn't put those 2 in the ''groundbreaking music'' category. IMO of course.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to infer with your posts, but there are very few "new" Prince listeners. I'm a teacher in LA, and very few, if any, high school students even know who Prince is. However, they know U2, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Madonna, and other bands from the 80's and 90's who release and distribute their music in a reasonable way. What Prince is doing is becoming increasingly frustrating to his dwindiling fanbase. That is fact. For example, Pearl Jam is releasing new music on October 15th. There will be a cd, an itunes release, and a tour with confirmed dates to follow. In fact, tickets are already on sale for their shows. Their website is up to date and they have already released a single from the project. What is the release date for Prince's new studio album? When will the tour take place? Prince did it right with the Musicology tour and made big money!!!! Why did he abandon this successful model? It makes no sense. This has nothing to do with old verses new, but rather dumb verses smart.

Somewhere along the way he went from being an artist to becoming a craftsman. Around the time of Musicology he talked about crafting songs. That's not what we - in general - want, but it's what I respect.

Why is it important to you that every person in the world, of any age, knows Prince?

I enjoy his music.

His music is the background track in my life. During intense phases in my life, I will listen to his music a lot. When I'm really down, I'll comfort myself by listening to his music.

And throughout the decades that I have been to concerts, all these experiences and memories became true valuable treasures.

Some of my friends are like me, fams. Some friends are fans and some of my friends detest him.

Most importantly, all of them are very happy for me, that I can enjoy his music so much.

I mean, it are those people that matter to me. I really don't care if some kid or granny knows him or not.

And why do you want him to continue with one business model ( feeling ill) ?

He is first and foremost a musician.

And fortunately he has not copied himself every year again. And I love that.

I mean, he still can surprise his fans after more than 2 decades!

A friend of me, who knows a lot more about music and music business than me, hopes that Prince would work together with a producer (sorry, forgot his name). And I agree that it would be wonderful if he would get challenged by somebody who pushes Prince, to push his buttons and make him excell.

But it's his life.

And his life is not about our dreams, hopes and urges, is it?

He seems to be happy and doing well. He has gathered 3 really cool musicians around him.

And they enjoy creating music on stage and sharing that great vibe with the audiance.

What can we wish more for than getting to see him on stage and him sharing a song he occasionally writes via internet?

I don't wish him to be a puppet for the masses.

I really like him where he is right now.

Reinventing himself and enjoying all the ups and downs that life has to offer.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

By the way, this site has been up and going for a very long time.

And ever few months, somebody (who does not visit this site a lot) starts a thread with exactly the same content as yours.

So, if some people are yawning over your post, forgive them. If you really are interested in an answer to your question, try to read old threads about this subject. There must be a lot of these threads you can read about exactly the same subject that you try to discuss here.

Haha i said in my 1st post if it wasnt for prince's live show he would be has been . and i stand by that .

i think whats wrong with prince's new music is prince lives in prince world and noone around him has the balls to tell him his new music sucks , i bet if some did they would be fired on the spot and he's so rich he can just fund everything himself . prince is so out of touch with the common man these days .
