oh hell yes!! this to me was when Prince went totally underground
despite the fact the dude couldnt get a hit if he tried he was as prolific as ever
not to mention the ONA tour and the front row seats!!!

2001 was one of the best years of my life as a fan of Prince! At LAST he was opening the vault!!! It was wonderful, basically we were getting the equivalent of a new album every month in terms of new material: the mp3 tracks, the videos, the Ahdio Shows (THESE were so cool!)! And naive as I was I thought it was gonna last forever (Prince had enough in his vault to keep us busy for years!) and oh was I brokenhearted when it was announced that Year 2 would be a different formula!!! I totally loved the new material, the whole High/Peace/TCI/Slaughterhouse sessions, The Rainbow Children, all the live jams from past years and alternate mixes from the vault!!! I listened to these tracks to death back then! That whole thing was so totally worth my 100 bucks!
In a sense the 4rdEyeGirlTV shows are the closest thing we ever had to the Ahdio shows except that the sound quality ain't so good and it's more live and rehearsals than studio tracks. I so wish Prince would come to his senses and open a proper online shop OR a proper membership program like NPGMC again (no BS like lotusflow3r.com and its 5 unreleased jams billed $77!).

Yes - so great. The little skits were pretty corny, but very Prince-y. Getting a new CD every month was so great... but even then, we all found stuff to bitch about

I managed to 'obtain' TCI and The Slaughterhouse but I wish he would find a place to sell the NPGMC tracks. I'm hungry for more NPG | |

Agreed, it was beautiful. I still listen to it from time to time. Of course I have (and had) all those songs already, but it was a great mix. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

To me.... This is when he lost it, or at least he lost me.
To this point, I was a huge collecter and had all his released stuff (and more). But then he started with the website and purchasing online which didnt grab me at all. Back then, I was still on dial-up, had no interest in handing out my CC details, so........
And when things WERE released to the mainstream, it wasnt all that good. So I pretty much came to the conclusion that the unreleased stuff wasnt any better.
I did manage to hear all of it a few years ago, and there are some highlights but not many.

Seems to me like Prince is underground again, and still/again can't get a hit despite being prolific. Kind of a mini, less organized/cohesive npgmc era again.Funny about not getting "hits" - if Timberlake put out "Breakfast Can Wait" or Bruno Mars did "Extralovable Reloaded," these would be surefire hits.I was not in Princeland for the ONA front row seats and soundcheck access, but I LOVE hearing/reading the stories from that time! | |

Of course we know that Prince has often performed and recorded whole songs (or albums) by himself. The NPGMC stuff is the first time it sounded like he did it himself. Thin production, sound effects, weak backing vocals. Just an overall "cheap" sound. Having said that, I do enjoy most of the songs. |

I'm not sure it really was the first time it sounded like it--but it often did, yes. And that was kind of unfortunate, because I liked a lot of the songs. I think it might have been the shift away from all the stuff done with the real NPG, which was still present up through much of the stuff released through Crystal Ball. Emancipation was already a step toward it, but the live or full band stuff on Crystal Ball (and obviously the older era stuff) maybe seemed to make things--ah forget it. I'm not making sense here. I'm in general agreement here--the whole period (I guess we could call it the High period, since that's where many of these tracks supposedly were coming from) sounded like it was done by himself, in the way you're describing. The stuff toward the end of the year gave a bit of a reprieve--whether you liked One Nite Alone... it at least didn't have the same sound as most of the first year tracks, and obviously neither did Rainbow Children. But more and more since then, there are songs that feel... well, almost like rough demos that he never went back and either filled out with the band or filled out with himself. That's one thing when he's releasing them sort of "as demos" or "works in progress" (see the first "Guitar")--but they show up on the albums too, now. | |

But I still loved the whole NPGMC experience back then--and I had dial-up. Oh, God, it was slow. Sometimes I decided to go for the higher quality option, but... it would take hours for a single track, sometimes. And I was seriously ticked when I lost some of the tracks in shifting computers. They are all back in my possession now (one way or another). Always thought it was weird that "My Medallion" was left off Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse--I know it wasn't great, but I really liked it (and I see the similarity with "Spill the Wine"--it doesn't seem worth noting to me, and I can't see how that would be significant, though I've seen somewhere someone suggesting it was). I obviously hadn't heard "American in Paris" at the time, but I think of the two songs as cousins. Fun little narratives with no serious meaning whatsoever. | |

TwiliteKid, of course you are correct... The September, 2001 ahdioshow was the first time "Pearls B4 The Swine" was released. And boy do I love that song! I forgot that came out almost 6 months before the ONA piano album was mailed out. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

You had the One Nite Alone album 6 months before it came out, 4 months before it was announced, and before The Rainbow Children had even been released?

ONA Piano and TRC were welcome changes from the thin NPGMC style, but again I liked most of that era. I remember it taking hours to download some of the stuff, and overnight for the Ahdio shows! I'd still love to see those officially released on CD, but I know that'll never happen. The ONA concert was one of the best I've seen, and he didn't play any hits. |

My Medallion was supposed to be on The Chocolate Invasion when it was supposed to be released on CD as part of the 7 CD's thing. Surprisingly it was replaced at the last minute by The Dance before it was digitally released. The CD's art wasn't even changed and still shows the original tracklist (http://www.princevault.co...e_Invasion)
It's one of my favorite songs from these sessions so I was really pissed that it wasn't included (though I immediately fell in love with The Dance). I think these 2 albums should have been 12 or 13 tracks each and include My Medallion, When Will We Be Paid?, Van Gogh, Instrumental, and even maybe Cybersingle and One Song: these tracks'd have fit in quite perfectly.
