What a song!!
Does anyone have any insight into where this line may have come from? Was it written about someone? Was it a story that someone told him? I've never seen any notes detailing this masterpiece!
We all know that Prince has had many relationships. I just wonder where this story might have come from.
I also think that the vocals in this song are EPIC! Prince sounds totally EMPTY and distraught. I don't know of any person who sings his songs with more passion.

He sings those lyrics in such a gutteral way, it's like... the pain is verbal, and he barely wants to speak of it.
I never saw, or heard of Prince singing this song live. I think it would be fantastic!

Fantastic music, melody, performance. But always thought it was a very lyrically confused song. The chorus is fantastic. The verses are plain stupid, lyrically, and don't fit at all with the depth of the chorus. Feels to me like he ran out of grammatical gas. PIPS! Eurgh... | |

I unno...i understand whatcha sayin...but i think they go well together. The chorus is sooooo petty. Tears r fleeting and numerous. To surrender your unique life and friendships to become 1 of a uniform million that last a minute. The versus seem to speak well to the level of self esteem this person has to be able to see that downgrade of existence worthwhile. Someone whos self worth is dependent on someone else...pettiness...and bitterness...all spoken to. | |

Niice post. Well said. Agreed! And, oh, how that part goes, "I wish I could just disa...'' and the music fades out - disappears - as he's singing that in that instant. Dag! Show-off!!! That was hot.
