best P album for a modern day music lover

is it 3121?

my gf is 27 and has always liked Prince from a distance. she knows the hits, she knows purple rain (of course). but that's it.

her music world involves Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe, dubstep, new hip-hop, etc.

i bought purple rain for her and she listened to it, but i realized it sounds dated. she didn't really connect with it.

then i was playing 3121 in the car, and she LOVED it. she loved the fact that 3121 jumps all over the place musically - rock, funk, latin. she liked it much better than purple rain. interesting, eh?

anyone else have a similar experience? what album has hooked someone who doesn't like P's "classic" period. what album converted them to a true fan?

A buddy of mine loves Musicology. Although admittedly he is a fan of classic Prince too, but Musicology moved him somehow.

.

Hey, whatever works I guess!

I actually had a very similar experience with 3121. My friend loved it and was actually compelled to get something else on her own. She chose Musicology and gave it lackluster reviews, ending her short stint as a Prince fan.

3121 and Musicologu are the best candidates: mainstream and quite modern with a touch of old skool

Musicology. 3121 just seems like an embarrassing travesty to Prince's legacy. It might give a new listener the wrong impression. Shame everybody wants the instant hits cry

The Gold Experience

.

Just delete Pussy Control and Shh before you give it to her. Besides those two, it's a fairly upbeat album of straight hits and it has aged beautifully. Even the segues everybody else hated work well once those two songs are out of the way (although most people would think of the video game Portal while listening to it now)

V10LETBLUES

For today's musical tastes, it would have to be anything from 80-87. Everything else sounds incredibly cheesy and dated. And Lotusflow3r is the only post 87 album I could recommend.

Actually, swap out Pussy Control with Interactive from Crystal Ball. It works surprisingly well for an intro.

My wife's favorite Prince music is from Musicology onwards. She loves "modern" Prince. It's refreshing to me because, although she like Purple Rain, SOTT, etc., she is not hung up on "classic" Prince.

Parade is a good choice, it's totally out of time, it doesn't especially sound 80's, it's a world of its own. On the other hand ity has many experimental aspects that may be hard to grasp for someone who's only familiar with modern mainstream music.

Adorecream

Got to be 3121, has a tight dance floor epic running through, sexy female vocals (Tamar) and dance floor smashes like Black Sweat and 3121. Cool Latin themed jams like Lolita and smoochy ballads.

Its better for a contemporary record, than 3121, (Too much jazzique/arrogant sounds) and Planet Earth (Too cheesy) and Lotusflow3r (Great but a bit to deep for your standard Bieber/Minaj/Rihanna type fan).

But generally any modern music listener who willingly listens to or buys a Prince album, is definitely rising above the mire and showing signs of developing a more mature and accomplished musical taste. Many people need to realise music goes beyond Justin Bieber and Damye.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
