Songs good enough to be on Around the World in a Day

It's often said that Prince's 1980s output blows away his later work. And I agree for the most part, but I decided to do a little thought experiment. Are there any songs in his post 2003 output that could make it onto one of his peak 1980s albums? In other words, any songs that are better than the songs on that album.

So what songs post 2003 could make it on Around the World in the Day?

I think there are several that fit the vibe:
Reflection
Dear Mr. Man
3121
The Dance
Lion of Judah
The One I Wanna C
Boom
Crimson & Clover
Colonized Mind

to name a few.

Reflection...great song, maybe the best on Musicology but no...a bit of a stretch...for that albumDear Mr. Man...not really a bad song, but it's a snooze fest after hearing it five times. Would never fit on ATWIAD...awful choice in my opinion.3121...great song...but no again...The Dance...nope. Maybe the best on 3121. Lion of Judah...nice song, but wouldn't belong either. The One I Wanna C...Uh..isn't that The One U Wanna C? No...but would fit better than any of the above choices by far... Boom...Maybe, just maybe...might sound good before Paisley Park... Crimson & Clover....Prince did not do many covers back then, but the vibe here is at least somewhat comparable... Colonized Mind...wonderful song...even though it's 50% a cover of Miriam Makeba's Quit It...and Absolutely not...does not fit the vibe of ATWIAD

I don't think any of those songs feel like they could be on Around the World in a Day

*

Why did you pick that album?

*

Reflections to me maybe Parade ala Sometimes It Snows in April

3121 feels like Rock Hard in a Funky Place

*

Crimson & Clover since it's a cover I don't know how I would consider that

I hear ya about the formatting. Hopefully, this post will be on. I'm surprised that you don't think any of these songs would fit. Dear Mr. Man goes with the politics of America and Pop Life and kind of goes with the laid back groove of the latter. The One U Wanna C (thanks for the correction) goes with the pop rock feel of Raspberry Beret.

Good question. I chose that album as an album from his peak that has a couple of weaker tracks: America (which is half a cover) and Temptation and because it has a pretty clear psychedelic vibe, so it'd be easier to find songs that match the mood.

Songs from Planet Earth. For example, "Lion Of Judah" and "All The Midnights In The World" are in my opinion far better than "America", which, by the way, doesn't fit in Around The World In A Day at all.

Pretty much any B-side from that album. Omit Temptation and America, replace with B-sides, probably re arrange the tracklist a little and it would be a helluva lot more consistent.

Around the World in a Day is just fine as it is. None of the songs you've suggested fit with the style of the album, at all.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
