3 Chains O' Gold Movie

I didn't know Prince had made another movie aside from the classics (Sign O The Times, UTCM, PR, and Graffiti Bridge.) I read the plot, and it seems very....creative smile Anyway, is it any good? I don't wanna waste my money, again.

It's not a real movie, but a collection of music videos surrounded by cryptic scenes that don't make any real sense. A typical prince production. Prince invested some serious $ in the production. If you like well produced music videos from your favorite artist, you should buy it.

Film and album

The film was accompanied by the Love Symbol album, however not all of the album's songs make an appearance in the film, and some of the songs are edited versions. The film's title song is only an instrumental at the end. However, some of the dialogue from the album does appear in the film (a phone call from a reporter, played by Kirstie Alley, to Prince). The final speech of the film (made by Mayte) does not appear on the album, instead another phone call is in its place. The actual songs that appear in the film are:

  • "My Name Is Prince"
  • "Sexy MF"
  • "Love 2 the 9s"
  • "The Morning Papers"
  • "The Max"
  • "Blue Light"
  • "I Wanna Melt with U"
  • "Sweet Baby"
  • "The Continental"
  • "Damn U"
  • "7"
  • "The Call"

Is this available on DVD? I have it on VHS, but no longer have a VHS player.

I got a kick out of this back in the day.

My takeaway from this movie: Prince likes a full bush.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Worth it just for the high production values - it's beautifully shot. There isn't really a coherent plot so just enjoy it for all the eye candy and the lavish videos and you can't go wrong.

Love the scene of him on the merry go round and then getting off the bullet train in Japan. The Morning Papers and 7 video are particular highlights for me.

I always found it strange that "The Call" doesn't appear on more outtake collections.

For the most part the videos are quite good. Compared to his TV specials that he did around Come / TGE the production values are a lot higher. For some reason he chose to edit them and make them shorter though - it doesn't have even the full version of "The Continental".

My favourite part is when he leaves to Japan for no real reason and it's supposed to be some sort of a big plot twist concerning his relationship with Mayte.

I like "3 Chains O' Gold", but my problem with this "movie" - it's not the full music videos.

.

some dialoge with band members is cutting the videos earlier.

.

I like the music videos,

.

the short clip of the My Name Is Prince performance is great (imo).

.

still it's very short/ incomplete iirc.

.

many of the other videos are incomplete too, "7" to mention one.

Soo what is the verdict on buying a VCR just to get this and any other VHS only releases???

.

I have honestly never owned one, my family got DVD when I was 11.

.

I mean a VCR is what like 5 bucks?

You can buy a DVD/VHS combo recorder so you can convert those old VHS to DVD. And no 3 Chains O' Gold is not protected. I've done it. Neither is Prince and the Revolution Live. wink

For cheap I don't see any "fammish" behaviour with it.

What are you going to get with 5 bucks these days anyway? A burger?

Alternatively, if you know what you are doing, you could seek them on the interwebs and download them for free. They are all out there (or they used to be, don't know about now), some are even ripped from Laserdisc so quality is better than a crappy VHS tape.

If you consider Graffiti Bridge a classic you should be ok with this and as a prince fan it's worth tracking down for kitsch value. It is, of course, utterly diabolical.

biggrin thats the first thing that comes to mind with this 'movie'

great album, some good videos but bits in between dont make much sense but P throws some naked chicks in so happy days.

Did we ever find out what the meeting in Japan was for? I was also perplexed at the time where was the 3 Chains of Gold (song) as it was listed on the back, I was expecting a video or perfomance of it

But the japanese Laserdisc version is censored. Only on the VHS you get to see all the nudity.

Wasn't the companion comic book supposed to fill in the details of the movie?

This is a big hint for me to get it, because I love UTCM and GB is just so-so for me (and only because of the songs, I don't like the story 2/5 stars for me) SO yeah, if its better than these 2 than I'd pony up for it!

I see some NRFP ones on amazon for $90 or used for $47.

I don't know nothing about downloading. I get scared of viruses. I have used Ilivid to copy a youtube video a few times, and save it for myself. (usually the ones I know Prince's litigators will take down when they find them).

what? I have to defend UTCM here:

.

3COG is better maybe than GB, but.... Under The Cherry Moon is fantastic, you just can't compare the 3COG movie with: UTCM...

.

not imo.. smile

.

the only really bad part of UTCM is the way it ends. Otherwise it is a Prince clasic,

.

-- funny and stylish at the same time.... Prince has/ had a very sick kind of humour, at least back then.. and I love/ loved it. Peace, defend mode is over. wink

.

you will get disappointed...... big time.

.

some cool music videos, but it's far from a good "movie".
