Prince wrote, arranged & composed 'Inner City Blues'

by Nona Gaye....or did he? I love her remake on the Marvin Gaye Tribute album and I saw a video of her singing the song at Paisley Park....can anyone shed light? Also, I htink it was released when 'Love Sign' was released (or roughly).

i'm aware of that as i have the cd. but wendy and lisa are not prince. as i said before, prince had nothing to do with it. he didn't write it, play on it or produce it, and whilst prince dated nona, wendy and lisa left prince's band years before, it doesn't mean prince had anything to do with it. prince isn't responsible for everything carmen electra did just because he boned her, and he gets no credit for jam and lewis success just because they worked together

u think Prince would be a part of this video if he had nothing to do with the song?

It's funny people still go by the CD/liner credits! it's a known fact in some cases Prince dosen't take credit or gives credit to others - so using this fact we can assume there are many unknown Prince productions out there. So it is possible that he worked on that track in some capacity.

the song is an original composition by marving gaye and james nyx.

so nona did a cover.

even if prince was involved in the arrangement of the cover version

(which is unlikely given that wendy and lisa are on it and they were

not really on speaking terms as far as we know at that time), that

still doesn't mean prince 'wrote arranged and composed" the song

"inner city blues (make me wanna holler)".

that would be like saying that prince wrote "brick house" because a

cover version of it ended up on mayte's 'child of the sun' album.

the Prince version w Nona Gaye is from the VH1 tv special "Love 4 One Another" early in 1996, right after the Gold album was released.

Terrible version imho. Awful, sounds like plastic.

(I don't think it was ever released as a single or on an album, not sure though)....

Yes we all know about jamie starr, paisley park, alexander nevermind etc etc, but if you dig deeper and use a bit of musical knowledge about Prince you can work out that he has more to do with the satellite artists he works with, often giving himself less credit that what he actually did, to help distance himself from the artist and let them have the spotlight.

Just saying, yes Prince often gave credits willy-nilly on record sleeves in order to camoflage his own involvement, but everyone still knew it was him, and the writing credits where it counted (ASCAP whatever) were still accurate.

The video was part of Love 4 One Another, a VH-1 TV movie Prince made, similar to The Beautiful Experience a couple of years later, Nona performs the track on it (and is in TBE too coincidentally).

The credits on the album say it was produced by Me'Shell NdegéOcello and Wendy Melvoin - I see no reason to dispute this. Wendy was working with Me'Shell at this time on her Peace Beyond Passion album.

RE: satellite artists. A lot of the albums he has had maybe 1 or 2 songs officially credited to him, he was usually the exec producer and had some say in all the songs at some stage in the recording and arranging stage. martika's album for instance has a lot more prince interference than the credits would give. A Magical Place to me sounds very Prince-like, even if it doesn't say on the album. Also Sitting In The Lap of Luxury by Louie Louie sounds like a Prince song - it may not be, but I like to think there are lots of these unknown songs out there. keeps the hunt alive!

To think we know for sure that he didn't have something to do with the track is absurd.

I knew since I first heard it that Prince was on George Clinton's "Get Satisfied", because I can hear him. But, until Chronic Freeze posted on here a couple years ago, anytime I said that people said I was wrong. Chronic confirmed that he was on the track as well as being all over much of Clinton's Paisley Park material.... without being credited.

So.... we don't know.

wink

EDIT: I am speaking about possible performance or production, of course... I know Marvin wrote the track.

and no, Prince doesn't play on Madonna's song "Like A Prayer" either. unless you mean a couple of the remixes, where the briefly use his guitar solo (also sampled in "Act Of Contrition"). his work on it was removed from the album version.

and no, Prince had nothing to do with the Nona Gaye recording. you know that Nona has her own entire album that was released that also had no Prince involvement as well, don't you?

he didn't have anything to do with that track 100%

but he did play guitar on like a prayer by madonna, and keep it together, and act of contrition and love song all from the madonna album like a prayer had prince input, although on LIP and KIT only remix versions of the tracks contain prince

the song was part of a tv special. another tv special from the same vh1 period had part of a madonna video in it that prince had nothing to do with

From what I remember, that's supposedly him on the guitar intro of the single and album track and video version of "Like a Prayer", maybe not really performing in the middle of the song, but added on as an intro. And "Act of Contrition" seems to be more than just a sample of him, it's likely he was the instigator for the entire arrangement, mix, and backwards shit. Also it is supposedly him on the rhythm guitar on "Keep it Together". All this was uncredited on the album, but then confirmed by Madonna herself in a published interview.

it doesnt matter whos version of the song you are asking about.

it was written (composed) in 1971 by Marvin Gaye & James Nyx. that will never change, no matter who records it.

has anyone seen the dutch(?) guy on youtube going throught his prince cd/vinyl collection?

Well, I think he's insanely addictive watching (all 8 parts!), but as he goes through his massive collection, he list some of the songs Prince has "touched" he seems to believe the album credits and has no idea that Prince has in some cases more tracks on the particular record.

anyway check him out, he's a bit OCD, but I like him.

[Edited 4/7/13 7:43am]

I think it's safe to admit that Prince didn't play on more than we know on stuff like Louie Louie or Martika: people speak, these things get known, + Prince's sound is very recognizable and despite many songs trying to sound like Prince (and many fanboys wanting to believe that Prince recorded every song in the whole world), it's usually obvious when he's actually behind a track (save, I'll give u that, a single instrument's contribution such as Keep It Together).

I don't understand well what the deal is with Inner City Blues, though: I always assumed that P had produced the song that was aired on the L4OA TV show, but this thread doesn't make it clear wheither this is the same recording that was released (the one with W&L, which I didn't know of) or if 2 different versions exist. Can someone please clear this?

As for Get Satisfied I don't remember CF saying that P was on it but I may have missed it. Does anyone have a quote of this? (I know CF asked not to be quoted but I'm only asking for a sentence so that should be fair enough wink)

Thanks smile
