Dissertation on PRINCE

I wouldn’t consider myself a Prince scholar, but in the last years I wrote some in depth-analysis papers for university, about his lyrical gender conception. Now, it’s time for my dissertation and I am considering writing on: PRINCE.

In order to combine gender/dressing issues with lyrical content, the question of this research will be a gender-philosophical one. I would like to take a look at how his gender performance expressed via his dressing behavior, style and expression influenced and changed the queer performative field in music videos forever. To presume this I would like to sketch theory and analyze some of the main figures expressed in his lyrics and/or video.

My question is, can U spot any repetitions in terms of, gender models, gendered behavior and structure of desire between the male and female? Like for example who’s the object who’s the subject and so on?

Purple greetz This may not be what you need, but, as a reocurring theme, what you will see mostly is Prince trying to become or becoming the ultimate hybrid--in gender, race, and musical style. For instance, in Prince: A Pop life, The Lyrics of Prince, and another article I can't remember, there is the notion presented that in 1999 and other projects Prince seems to be reconstructiong the male-female relationship by reconstructing the male being in ways that each (the male and the female) can take turns assuming or sharing what had been considered very rigid gender roles. So, for Prince, he seems to freely transtion from being the object and subject, not only one song from the next being even within the same song, espeically in something like "Why You Wann Treat Me So Bad?" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" where we are never sure whose in control of the relationship. I hope this helps, but I'm not sure it's what you need. Good luck as I think it is a very interesting and worthy project.
