NPG Exodus album

i believe this album came out in 94 and i am just now hearing it for the first time. i think its a great album.i kinda wish it was released as a prince album with just prince vocals. Did this album sale well? are there outtakes for this album? whats everybodys favorite songs? im really like "cherry cherry" a lot and "new power day" is hilarious.

I too am in love with this CD! There's an excellent set out there called Exodus V2 or something like that which is the Exodus album plus all the outtakes from it. I'm surprised there are a lot of outtakes for this album since a lot of material from this era must've been split up between Come, The Gold Experience, Exodus, and Chaos and Disorder.

Some outtakes I can think of are

Slave 2 The System

Acknowledge Me

Super Hero

Mad

Love... Thy Will Be Done

Funky

Proud Mary

The Funky Design

I hope I was helpful!

Probably one of is best works of the 90's. I just wanted Prince to sing lead vocals too.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Exodus is the SHIT!

I even like most of the segue work too, which is unusual.

Hit him so hard, change fell out his pockets cool

Some seriously good tunes too. I love the stupidness and funkiness and nastiness. Such nastiness wink

Except for "Count the days" and "Exodus" pretty forgettable!

"Goldnigga" gets my vote for best NPG album.

Great album. Helped turn a friend of mine onto Prince. He liked both the music and the mystique of it not being released in the country where we live.

My favorites are Hallucination Rain, Big Fun, and The Exodus Has Begun. But every song is great. The only downside is that the drums are a little repetitive on a couple of tracks.

"What the fuck you waiting on baby?
Get your shit, let's hit the door!
We could have big fun"

That album has some of the best cussing ever put on record. Dirty Prince sure was fun smile

Exodus comes across as Prince's homage to Parliament Funkadelic. This is the funk!!

Be sure to check out The Good Life (Big City Remix) and Get Wild (Money Maker Funky Jazz Mix) from the singles. Good stuff...

wink

It all depends on your funk expectations. IMO this kind of funk doesn't really work. I even enjoy "TAPOAFOM" by the old funk master himself more than this "Exodus" medicocrity.

Like his music in general with the end of the 80s Prince's funk began to be all subpar.

er

Would have been an okay album if it wasn't ruined by the annoying habit he had in those days of turning every album into a concept album by overloading it with segues, spoken parts, sound effects and the like. 15-20 minutes of Exodus is taken up by that nonsense. I'm so glad he stopped doing that!

Great album, Exodus..

.

near as great as the Gold Experience and the Come album...

.

my fave Exodus tracks:
.
Count The Days,

The Good Life,

Big Fun,

Return Of The Bump Squad,

The Exodus Has Begun

.

the only I don't like is "Cherry Cherry".

.

and those seagues are annoying as well.

.

Come - Exodus and The Gold Experience. Those 3 are fantastic, really the prolific Prince,

.

Try to look for THE DAWN bootleg from this 1994-95 era, studio mix and alternate versions.

.

The Dawn 3CD, maybe the "best" studio bootleg ever.. woot!

YES!!! It's long overdue. I'll never forget hearing this song for the first time. It was live at Glam Slam MPLS in 1994. He had his black top hat with the bundle of flowers on it, and his one-eyed bass, and went the fuck OFF for like 10 minutes. The crowd was going crazy and nobody even knew the song. Such a jam.

*

I remember this record tided me over until Gold came out. I made a mix tape of some of the Come tracks, a couple Space and Letitgo remixes, Love Sign, Mustang Mix, and some key Exodus tracks to make my own Gold Experience until the real thing finally came out.

*

Still love "Count The Days." The rhythm guitar is just to die for. If only there was a P-only vocal version available.

*

The title track is just epic with all of the vocal layering. The lyrics are quite interesting as well. It's an odd mix of like 70's funk meets futuristic soul, and it doesn't get as much attention as it should IMO.

*

"Cherry Cherry" is also a personal fave. I like the story it tells, and Prince back-ups are just heavenly. I especially love, "Using all the money her boyfriend Wilbur gave her she'd buy/Anything I wanted that's why my baby's so fly." Someone told me this was originally called "Chili Chili," and was about Rozonda "Chili" Thomas from TLC, but was changed when Sonny told him a story about an old girlfriend. He does mention the name Rozonda in the song and was rumored to be kickin it with Chili around that time. I remember seeing her at Paisley back then. Maybe someone remembers but didn't she get up and sing Sweet Thing one time? I swear that was her but I could be mixing up concerts.

*

"Big Fun" is a cut. "Bump Squad" is killer. "Good Life" has a great chorus. The only one that never grabbed me was "Hallucination Rain." And maybe "New Power Soul." It kinda sounded like elevator music to me at the time.

*

Yea, this was a great record! I would not be mad if Prince released a version of it on 3rdEyeGirl.com with him on lead vocals. I'd even pay like 7.77 for it. biggrin

Individual songs on it are good, even very good, but no stone cold classics. Also its ruined by all the stupid segues, and unfortunately its mid 90s, meaning its from the period of olympic swearing on albums.

Mainly because of potty mouthed gangster rappers who were the rage in that 1992 -1996 period, how can I say this without being offensive, its just too ghetto Watts for my liking and him recording this stuffwas below an artist of his calibre. I mean a beautiful song like Count the days is ruined by the word - motherfucker several times and sounds like a ghetto gospel novelty rather than a proper song.

Thank God that get wild and good life lift this above the mire. I don't really get the song Exodus that just goes on too long. Some people love it, but to me its just a self indulgent experiemnt thats too uneven to be taken seriously. He's trying too hard to be like Tupac here.

3/10 sad sad sad sad
