Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Just listening to the podcast now, good to hear some Aussie voices. Have been listening to this album for the past two weeks in the car, thoroughly enjoy the album.

Just as long as we're together, this one gets played alot. I only recently bought this album, I guess I missed it in my youth, as with some of his other albums, but it does bring back the era of those times, and I think thats why it is enjoyable to listen to.

I skipped your last podcast becasue I can't stand to hear anything about most of his 90's albums, but I'm sure it was a good show anyhow. But I couldn't miss this one. Fun podcast guys, keep up the good work.

I have never been more angry at a Prince review. I like these blokes, but this review makes my point that you should not let newer Prince fans to review older albums.

Guys, this was his first album! Obviously he is not going to sound like Purple Rain or Sign. His sound is naive, soulful, wonderful.

this is a great album.

Agree totally, being a Kiwi I am always going to root for these guys and support their endeavours, but this was beyond the pale. Its obvious they don't like it and saying parts of it sound like 70s porn music is pretty silly.

They rated it too ow and I feel were too busy trying to compare it to the albums of his golden age (Kind of like comparing Rockin Robin to Billie Jean), I don't think it is as bad as they make it out to be. I mean they did not even like "Baby"..... come on, and even imposed their morality on it saying that he's 19 and shouldn't be singing about being a father.

They really glossed over the clever explicit lyrics of "In Love" and "Soft and Wet" to talk about how amateurish they sound and seed like next to Purple Rain and 1999. That's great guys, you can review Purple Rain later, but now its all For You.

To me For You is a GREAT first album and kind of sets the blue print for all of his subsequent work. And also its the album that set Prince up as a figure to be praised, criticised and discussed, no one had heard of Prince except a few people in the Twin Cities, Warner's Execs and the like before For You.

But once it came out, Prince was unleashed on the world and the only way was up.

The only thing they really got right was recognising that I'm Yours is a great closing track and probably his most mature sounding track on the album.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I actually agree with most the podcasters' review of this album. Like toejam, I think "Just As Long As We're Together" is a standout and sounds like a lot of effort went into this piece of work.

And remember, they do admit that it's difficult to rate this album without taking into account all his later releases.

For me, it's an impressive debut from a very young artist that still sounds too dated for my taste. His 2nd album, on the other hand, is still on constant rotation in my house, which could be due to the lack of disco-flavored elements and more natural sounds from guitars, bass, and piano.

Well said. Love the funk workout in "Just As Long As We're Together" - a sign of things to come, but am a fan of "Baby" mostly cos I was bang in love at the time I first heard it! rolleyes

I'm from the UK and also recognised the riff from "I'm Yours" straight away when I first heard it, but can't for the life of me remember where it was from - the intro to some TV programme from the late 70s I think.

(How come I can't put Returns into a message now? Have to use full stops as seperators).

"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15
