I looooooove the extended version of Girl. I actually hadn't heard it 'til about five years ago, when I tracked it down and bought it.

I love the inflection on the "Marry me" line. It's like he's baring his soul and trying to laugh it off but he just gets so overcome that he blurts it out. But he says it in a way that makes you think he's actually thought about it before - and that he wants to catch her off-guard with it. So that if she says "no," he can just laugh it off again.

I love it when he does "vulnerable."

It's funny but I don't see it like that at all. To me, he says it because he's trying to get in her pants.

Imagine being there... Ahoy Hall... 3rd night of the North Sea Jazz Festival... Rotterdam... The not-very- hot summer of 2011... Prince onstage...introducing a drumbeat by John Blackwell... Prince saying, we've never played this before, but 4 U...and then going into a full band version of Girl...as a duet with Andy Allo... Those three nights were pure Prince magic!

Sure is! I was amazed! It was 1 of those situations when Prince was on stage and all of a sudden played something you'd never expected him to play! And he did! Just like that night in the Melkweg about two weeks later when he opened with What's My Name. Neither of those songs were ever played again. One of the things that remind U of why U became a Prince fan in the 1st place.

Fonkyman

It's gorgeous.

One of my favourite tracks. Don't think I've ever heard the 7" so I can't say. First time I heard it I thought it was shit. I kept wanting to put it back on though, one of those growers. Vocals on it are blinding, I love the way he sings it. Great lil quirky tune. Back then his B sides knocked shit out of most peoples A sides.

Gorgeous. Love that acoustic job from Paris '09 too.

Yep! Except she's saying "Boy..."....If you have a digital copy you can run it through Audacity and reverse it. That's what I did. smile

According to PrinceVault it's Vanity singing background vocals (played in reverse).

Granted I mised the angry 1999 years, but Im about to give it up to Susannah and them for creating an era where anything is possible. I am selfish having wanted the one man mastabutory 1999 type of music. But I was young then and now realize the power of Large Room No Light compard to Lady Cab Driver (high Vainandy wave lol).

But Girl is a track from '82, isn't it? Initial tracking for Girl took place in the same time period as the tracking for Lady Cab Driver.

The info? It's from PrinceVault. They also write:

Although credited to Prince and the Revolution, the track is a solo recording by Prince.

Initial tracking took place in Spring-Summer 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years. Prince remixed the track slightly in 1985 at an unknown location (Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, is likely).

I always think if All My Dreams lyrics when I hear/read the lyrics to Girl

A submarine valiantly conquers a virgin sea
A child is born, a child is born, will U marry me?

Marry me 2day and 2night we'll make love until the world stops turning
(I'm dreaming of a world)
(Wherein there shines the sun)
(Wherein there lay the stars)
(Wherein there lie the stones)
Gentle, but quickly

I see where you are coming from but A.M.D. seems like a Busby Berekely type of univeral theme and performance

Girl seems intimate and one on one. Like WDC.

YeS, That is sorta why I like the 2 together, Girl feels like the focusing of the universal love them of AMD, He finds her in AMD and take her home in Girl

But that 'poem' part in All My Dreams is really the part, and it definately is intimate, xxx sexy

But really it's what I like about this period which too me, the 'vision' still encompasses the 1999-Dream Factory period of themes and ideals and how so many song define each other

Welcome, this is where I live
This is where I dream my dreams
2night we'll make love until the world stops turning
U're small but very strong
U move like a cat: quickly but gentle
So insane
He caressed her in her eyes and licked her abdomen
She shivered with delight
Over and over she nibbled his ear
U'd think it was wrong 2 have so much fun
He held her tightly until it almost hurt
But his hips, they moved so slowly
She wanted 2 stop breathing
U can feel every curve of her womanhood
U can see every thought in his brain
A submarine slowly moves through the virgin sea
Oh so slowly
She wants 2 stop breathing
U... U can feel every curve

Lisa, I'm gonna give U the brush and U're gonna paint the side of the train

She squeezes tighter as the submarine goes deeper in depth
Into the unnavigated territory
A smile, ever so slight, appears on his face as she starts 2 cry
Until they come, 2gether, slowly
They wish 4 somethin', as if they could see a parallel future in the sea
They do not speak
They only stare out the moment in time

Marry me 2day and 2night we'll make love until the world stops turning

Yeah and backing vocals probably redone by Wendy

Because he (Im assuming) didnt know what love was back in 82. If he wrote that about Vanity it means less ..not because she wasnt worh loving..and she was the baddest of Princes girls to this day..but he stole her from Rick James. This was a roosters competition vibe back then and a huge buisness relationship rather than one that grew into love..imho.

He was in no way tryna get married in 1982

he sang Foreigners I Wanna KNow What Love Is at the top of his lungs to Susannah...he sang I wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth to Vanity

.
