I like it much:

"Free to change your mind

Free to go most anywhere, anytime

Be glad that you are free

There're many of men who're not"

We make our own way to heaven everyday
"The only Love there is, is the Love we make"

I agree..."Free" has a universal,easy-to-understand message that everyone could relate to.I like "Moonbeam Levels" but I think alot of people would not have understood the true meaning. The main line in the chorus ("please send all your moonbeam levels to me") would have confused some listeners.

I love "Moonbeam Levels"--but I'm certainly among the "some listeners" that would be confused. What is he talking about? I have no idea.

Why not? It's among the cheesiest of his "seduction ballads".

In my not-so-humble opinion...

It's cheesy if it's serious--I think it's hilarious. Now, I certainly wouldn't want it playing during an actual encounter... that would ruin the mood. But then, "Do Me, Baby" isn't great mood music, either. It might be a "seduction ballad," but since it ends with her watching and him breaking down after his lonesome finale (he didn't "wanna do it all alone," but I think he actually does), I'm not sure what you're supposed to think. Very strange.

This thread's had me pulling all kinds of faces. Some of you are funkin bananas. biggrin

"Shadows of Purple Rain" confuse "If there was no Free there'd be no Purple Rain" confuse "People don't get it"?

I get it. I couldn't give a monkeys how profound the message's supposed to be. Nothing to do with Moonbeam Levels why I don't like it. I didn't own a boot when I first heard Free. It's just a shitter to my ears. Apples n Oranges, earwax and cotton buds. shrug

ok fonkyman, you don't like it, don't make such a case

wink

Underappreciated because it stands out on the album, so it's kind of weak link in between all the sexysynthelectrofunkpopfuckery.

International Lover is a seduction ballad in the mold of Do Me, Baby - but Free is not a love song - not a 'sexy' love song - it's a utopian hippy drippy song, from the same well as other much-loved songs to come later like Graffiti Bridge and Strays Of The World - maybe Free is the first of these?

I like the song, but I'm just sayin' - it's pretty obvious why it's viewed the way it is.

I think of free as something hippy, generation defining anthem, something in those lines. It stand for Prince's catalog as You Cant Always Get What You Want from the Stones and All You Need Is Love from the Beatles in the 60s. None of these are great songs, but good songs. I think of Free as something like this.

-Wtv u heard bout me is true,I change the rules n do what I wanna do.[Im n love w God,He's the only way - NOT!]We know we gotta die some day,so Im gon have fun evr MF night!Im gon 2 another life. How bout u?

I dont get why so many of you dislike Take Me With You. It's such a pretty pop song! the string arrengement is gorgeous!!! It may not be the best song on Purple Rain, maybe it's the weakest, but it's still a great song and im glad its there!!

It is also arguably the least dated and freshest sounding song on the album.

For some reason I think of the Ladder when it comes to Free, I wish the Ladder had a bit more punch like Free, which I could easily see fitting on ATWIAD

Leave The Ladder alone. Nobody puts The Ladder in a corner.

As I think PR is a masterpiece, I dont think any song on it sound dated, nor any other music I find classic. For me, classics are ageless. They may refer to a particular era in our minds, but calling them dated seems to me that it's implicated that music's always evolving, which is not the case. Weaker music may get aged, not classics. But I totally agree with you when you say Take Me With You sounds VERY FRESH.
