My flv leak makes mplayer (Fedora 17 `current`) mention:

AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 131.8 kbit/9.34% (ratio: 16474->176400)

And the $1.77 mov:

AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 125.8 kbit/8.19% (ratio: 15730->192000)

So even though the sample rate of the mov audio is higher the bitrate is lower.

Xine has ~127 Kbit for the mov, it varies a bit but is never really over 128 Kbit/s.

Xine has a steady 129 Kbit/s for the flv.

So it looks the exact numbers can vary but at my end it looks like the leak has a better bitrate than the mov.

What would be the ultimate way to measure or display this?

No worries, I don't feel mislead

To be clear, it is the better quality audio of the two by a hairs width but it looks like all the problems in the first release were problems with the master recording. There's loads of crackling in the left side, the same problem exists in the Screwdriver vid and it's really distracting from the great music.

What really bothers me is that Prince has a history of releaseing sub optimal quality stuff online, his music deserves better. Does anybody remember when the NPGMC sold The Beautiful Experience TV special on video? It was a recording from Japanese TV, I can record off the telly myself and already had a better copy than what they sold! When I'm getting stuff straight from the artist, call me fussy, but I expect it to be spot on.

The sound quality is awful!

I expect that it is indeed something like that. But I can't believe nobody was checking this as he was filming a video, so surely the final product must have been of some importance!

It came in a plain white cardboard case with the symbol on the spine. Maybe said The Beautiful Experience too.

No, it wasn't at one of the yard sales. It was through NPGMC.com. I bought both of them, but when I moved a year later I tossed them out since I already had bootlegs that were of much better quality.

Can't even remember the last I heard the original. Maybe tomorrow . Just not after this take .

Doesn't he just film everything for his own reference and then decide afterwards to release it.

He's got multicammera 35mm edited complete movies of tours videos one of concerts and what have you.

so i'm guessing whilst his doing a two cammera straight to desk rehearsal of a new band the engineers probably thought this material didn't have a hope in hell of escaping the vault. All the after work like vision mixing the two live cammera angles (which in all fairness could have been done live they are so without direction) would probably be like any other day at paisley ya know "make a stunning move/song/album/video that never sees the light of day ho hum.

Although I suspect in my heart of heart it's a mastering or just file conversion problem

I am floored...never heared of this till now and I am usually vigilant about stuff like this. Maybe not being an npgmc member during the first year I didn't have access to get it.

I would LOVE to get my hands on these, regardless of quality. If anyone has copies and doesn't want them - pm me.
