Bowie is generally considered as one of the greatest songwriters ever! He's in the same league as Lennon / McCartney and he could write a true authentic funk tune in his sleep....

[Edited 1/10/13 11:24am]

Sorry but Bowie's funk sounds so white... aaarghh... Never liked his attemps at this genre at all.

Even on Scary Monsters, I always skip Fame.

Bowie is a master at sophisticated pop tunes.

I think you kinda underestimate what it takes to play some real tight funk a la Prince.

You should try The Party Man bassline for instance to start with. lol

I would assume that a massive Bowie fan who's been to 47 (lol) shows and owns all of his albums would know which album one of his biggest hits, "Fame", is on. Hint: it ain't Scary Monsters.

Too funny.

I think another poster said he had never listed to Fame becasue the only Bowie album he owned was Young Americans. lol

And Bowie's funk is sooo white, that maybe that is why James Brown recorded somewhat of cover of Fame that same year in 75 himself.

James Brown's Famous Flames guitarist Carlos Alomar is responsible for the riff on both tacks and John Lennon is credited as co-writer of Fame.

BTW I don't know how old you are but I have been following Bowie since the end of the 70s and I saw him more than Prince. I have seen him in the US, in GB, in Germany, in France... How many Prince gigs have you attended? Personnally 36 gigs from P.

And you knwo what.? The artist I have seen the most live is Bruce Springsteen. Since the 70s, 53 Springsteen gigs. With Prince, there are the best performers I have seen.

I keep track of all the gigs I've seen. When we were young, a gig was so cheap. I remember attending in the same week a PFunk gig, a George Michael gig, a Earth wind and fire gig and an Eric Clapton gig.

These times are over unfortunately. sad

PS: carry on defending trolls who think Party Man is not tight and that Prince is not a funk artist. It entertains me. wink

Yeah Young almericans is the best funk album eva. hahahaha

Honestly Bowie is not great at funk. Sorry. And Prince kills him when it comes to be groovy and funky. Go read the posts written by Bowie's haters on his forum. You've got friends there waiting for you.

^^ Obviously you're running out of arguments and start to bad-mouth now. Thats very clever and classy for a 50+ years old guy! I mean you really talk and behave like a teenager... wink

And what's up with all that silly "hahahaha"??? Yes, "Fashion" has an "F", so has "Fame" - It's like saying you always confuse "Purple Rain" with "Parade", because they both start with a "P". disbelief

Apart from that i think its more than amusing that you think you know better what kind of music is "funky" than the Godfather himself - the inventor of the whole thing. (But hey after all you're an expert, because you have seen Peter Pan, the tooth fairy and Yogi bear live on stage. All in one week since the tickets were so cheap rabbit)

Prince does NOT owe Bowie a bit.

He surely owes him the androgyny thing. Bowie did that first. And a lot of other things too...

David Bowie is a true musical legend. Period.

Bowie did what first...stole androgyny from Little Richard? It's like when someone said that Prince was impersonating Elvis with is live version of "Strange Relationship." Really, check history again. Elvis was stealing from Ray Charles. (Check Elvis’ cover of Charles’ “I Got a Woman” and “What'd I Say”.) So, Prince may owe Little Richard and Ray Charles, but, while I will not deny that Bowie may have been one of the many influences of Prince, Prince doesn't owe Bowie anything. Though I will give Bowie credit for checking MTV's Mark Goodman in the early 80s for MTV not playing black artists. So, while you may not know how indebted Bowie is to black music, he sure does.

+1

Bowie was the first bisexual artist on earth playing with his androgyny. He has copyrighted androgyny and eccentricity. wink

The truth is before he was ill, his audience had been reduced considerably and his sales were poor whether you like it or not.

His tours were successful but he was playing in smaller venues. Nothing like Springsteen Or the Prince Musicology Tour or 21 O2 Arena gigs.

No, the truth is that Bowie never sold that much records during his career. His legendary status is more based on the influence he had on the music scene in general. The only time he really sold a lot of records was when "Lets Dance " was released in the 80ies. ...

I dont know where you live but during the last two Bowie tours over here in Europe he was playing big arenas and not small venues like you claim....

[Edited 1/11/13 6:36am]

no? i think 140 million is quite a lot. razz

he sold 140 million record worldwide. Prince sold around 100 million. at least that's what wikipedia says. lol

not that it really matters anyway. both are influential in their own way. Bowie was earlier with androgyny than Prince. but Bowie ain't invented it. but he took it to a higher level. imo

Bowie sure inspired Prince. but i'm not sure.... has Prince ever said something about that?
