Exodus

What's the deal w/Exodus? Is this considered a Prince Cd like New Power Soul or an NPG like Gold Nigga? Are there versions of songs w/Prince as lead? Where any of the songs ever intended for Come, Gold or Chaos? Did Prince ever perfom any of the songs? Or is this a Sonny T Cd?

It's considered a NPG cd.

Yes there are versions w/Prince as lead.

No they weren't intended for any of those cds.

Yes Prince perfomed these songs, and mostly as lead.

It kinda stinks for newer fans that getting to hear these albums is so difficult! Prince needs a Paisley Park/NPG download store.

Exodus has Prince all over it, he's singing co-lead in almost every song... most of the songs have Sonny doing a very poor Prince impersonation.

If you can find it, definitely something that fits right in with Gold/Come/Chaos & Disorder... I'd recommend putting Mayte's album in there, hit shuffle, and relive one of Prince's best eras!

Are all of the songs circulating that feature Prince on lead?

I've heard versions of songs like High, Mad, Slave 2 the System and Acknowledge Me that have Prince on lead and then other versions with Sonny T. But those songs aren't on Exodus anyway.

Not really. There are some earlier versions of Get Wild that you can pick Prince's voice out a bit better. There's also the "Big City Remix" of "The Good Life", which is all Prince.

There is a great aftershow from the era (can't remember the name of it now) where Prince plays Proud Mary, Funky, Love Thy Will Be Done, and more - probably the closest you'd get to Prince versions of those songs... which are, of course, not on the album.

it would be great to have some versions with prince on lead vocals solo.

for instance "return of the bump squad".

oh how i would love to hear that with only prince on lead and backing drool

and "big fun", omg dead

Exodus is great for the most part. I could do without Goldnigga though. It's mostly Tony M. rapping.

Like billymeade said, it sounds a lot like the other music Prince was doing around that time, like Come and TGE, with an emphasis on funk. The highlights for me are...

Hallucination Rain

The Exodus Has Begun

The Good Life

Count the Days

Exodus received the promo treatment in Europe. In the UK especially, TV performances, interviews etc. Right in the middle of the Gold Experience tour, it was a very cool, fun time.

Like most other related artists produced albums - all fans who haven't heard it are missing a vital piece of the puzzle.

Not sure why people keep saying Sonny's vocals on this CD are bad. I think he sounds just fine on the record. Are the vocals onm the P-Funk records supposed to be on a higher level somehow?

Exodus is sort of the record that's missing from Prince's "solo" catalog of the 1990s. It's just a tighter, funkier take on Come / TGE type of material (a bit freer in form though). I actually prefer the production on it over the other albums from the same era. A lot of people don't like the segues, but a few them are quite funny. You can easily skip them, I guess.

When it came out it felt like the "new Prince record" at the time. Prince got quite a lot of coverage in the UK / European press in the mid-90s and that's the record he was promoting when he couldn't get TGE out on WB. Many fans consider it "almost a Prince record". It's def better than Newpower Soul (the other "NPG" CD release).

As odd as the albums are that would be great. Started listening to exodus and its enjoyable not on the same level as gold but just as good as come.

There was a live version of "Return of the Bump Squad" from NPG Music Club #2, with Prince on vocals (er, I mean "Tora Tora" on vocals). Check it out!

I wish I could hear it with fresh ears! To me, these albums are all intrinsically linked, I can't "unhear" them together. 94-96 was such a great time. Just like 84-86... and 04-06... hmm. Maybe 2014 will be something awesome smile

http://www.princevault.co...um:_Exodus was very insightful. I thought Acknowlege Me was meant for The Gold Experience. I must admit this was a great time for Prince fans. Does he always have 3 albums ready to go or what? I would love to hear some of the other songs like Proud Mary & Love Thy Will Be Done.

but it gives a good impression of what it might be like, indeed. nod

Seconding this. Exodus is classic and way funky. One of my favorite Prince/NPG albums. If it hadn't been so much under the radar, I think there were 2 or 3 legitimate hits on there that would've generated a lot of buzz.
