iloveannie,

I understood your point. I guess I can say the same thing for Let's Go Crazy on my list. I see the structure, it's a great structure, yet it doesn't click me. Although I must say I don't dislike it. It's just that I don't love it.

Yet, some people are saying to DISLIKE, properly said, these songs. What I question is what they see wrong with them. Not to put up a fight, but to understand their views.

Yes, it occurs what say about acclaimed artists like REM, Santana and AC-DC and how they get to be liked by some and not by others. But this is a matter of different bands. The most intriguing is a same artist's work to have strange divergences among that artist's fans!

And yes, it'd be fun to discuss the taste of orger's for other artists. First thing's clear: maybe 50% are also big fans of Michael Jackson.

Raspberry Beret never did much for me. It's an ok pop song but I never really got why it's considered a classic.

Didn't like it then, don't care for it now.

I feel the same about Take Me With U.

"Betcha By Golly Wow," which is another horrendous song, but considering it's anything BUT acclaimed I didn't include it in this thread. wink

I love the original Stylistic's version. It's one of the best soul music recordings of all time. totally understood why Prince wanted to record it. It's gorgeous. His version may not be so good, but the song itself is a classic.

Never liked it at all, to any degree, in any incarnation.

I do love Let's Go Crazy but always felt it was missing a killer chorus.

Dunno if it's quite a classic but Girls & Boys has always been my least favourite song on Parade, something schoolyard chantish about the melody that has always annoyed me.

The extreme cheese of Gold and TMBGITW means i'd hate them if they were by anyone else. As it is I enjoy them as ridiculous Prince songs.

Oh and Guitar... jesus man you write a song about a guitar? Give it a decent riff already neutral

Lovesexy 12" 28 minute version. On the B-side, Superfunky 18 minute job and 10 minutes of something we didn't hear. Anyone want that 12"?

yeah it's frikkin awesome too. it includes loads more "you want me to swivel in your love seat" type innuendo.

"you want me to finger your sooty glove puppet don't u?"

"i'm gonna kick my football right through your greenhouse window" and my personal favourite, "i'm gonna smash your back door in with my size 10 hobnail boots....baby".

We are all Prince lovers, right. I, as many, I believe, like MOST of his work. There's the controversial albums, in which are songs one likes the other doesn't, or songs few seem to care for (like the ones with Tony M rapping all through).

But are there acclaimed (critically or by us fans) songs that you don't seem ever to care for, even if you try?

It takes some nerve to admit it, doesn't it?

Of course opinions change a little or much with time.

I confesss Little Red Corvette and Sign o the Times were two songs that grew a lot on me with time, and now I consider two of his best, although I thought they were simply good at first.

Shame on me, but here are some songs I can't seem to care for:

Let's go crazy

It's not that I don't like it. But it's simply a good song for me. Not a classic. Yes it's rock and roll, it's anthemic, it's exciting, opening show number. I get excited, but I don't think it's that great song it's reputed for.

Sometimes it snows in April

I understand its a slow epic, beautiful mood, beautiful storytelling, hauting melody, but I can't seem to like it. It's too slow and a little tacky for me! I'm not moved by it the way it moves most fans, even though I tried may times.

Hot thing

It's funky, I like the rhythm of it... but the way he sings, I find it so lifeless, too slow, and the lyrics are almost dumb (Barely 21/looking for big fun, Baby you dance so good/Baby I knew you would). I get annoyed by it.

Batdance

It's a collage of many songs (in fact it is), but the result is very unfortunate for me. Can't understand why it was a big hit. It's too MESSY! It seems a remix to promote the album, a medley, not actually a song.

The arms of Orion

A pretty ballad. But it touches the cliche of a hollywood love theme. Almost like it could have been written by David Foster, Diane Warren or someone like that. Or that it could've been the love theme of Batman as sung by Celine Dion. It sounds like "I just cant stop loving you" by MJ. It's kind of tacky for me!

Diamonds and Pearls

It's also pretty ballad. But I keep waiting for it to take off. It seems to be missing something! A pretty ballad, but I won't ever be able to put it in a greatest P ballads playlist.

Incense and candles

Not as acclaimed as the other ones. But 3121 was a well received album. I like the album, but this song sounds too much like rnb radio 2006, in a bad way. It sounds like a pastiche, doesn't have the boldness we recognize in a Prince song. It seems like a generic rnb latin inflected song with a sticky chorus made for radio at the time, and that could be recorded by any generic rnb singer.

Kiss - It really bores me and its the only track on Parade I skip every time

Lovesexy - The whole album. It seems to get to so much praise from fans but that was the first album that I really, really cringed listening to. And wouldnt, and still dont, like playing it in front of people because it is so cheesy. And I never want to hear "love is god, god is love" coming out of my stereo! And as for Dance On..... oh, I'll stop there. I just dont like it!

Wasn't it "You want me to swim in your love seed, don't you baby"?

I like the bit after that 'sooty glove puppet' line. "You want me to Nookie bear, right in your eyes, don't you baby. You want me to glupe in your gravy chute, I'm drippin all over the floor, the floor. If I come back wearing somethin honey, it's gonna be plus fours, plus fours."

The keys on that are incredible. I read somewhere that Dr. Fink played them with a 'tadger' whatever one of those is?

I think For You is a VERY debatable album. I agree he may start to be virtually untouchable till 88 (or 89? - Batman's great!), but from 1979, not 1978.

For You has derivative song structures, painfully naive lyrics and a lack of artistic vision. Wait, did I just describe For You or every one of his pop albums since TRC? neutral
