Prince - 1999 (30 Years) Album Discussion

'1999' marks one of the few times where Prince demands attention through his creativity. Having displayed a unique sound and development over the years, '1999' is a weird funk game taking U N2 a eternal party wherein U learn "DANCE MUSIC SEX ROMANCE"...Which pretty much summarizes the album 4 me! What do u guys think about this album? Is it one of your favorite classic pieces by Prince?

Thanks So much in advance 4 the love and support ORG! U guys R 2 funky! headbang

I realy would love 2 hear what U guys think!

1999 is my favorite album by Prince. He put his foot in this project. The instrumentation alone on this project by this oneman band himself, Is unmatched by any artist. It contained his second crossover hit LRC that opened the door 4 what was to come. Its his last album b4 the after PR fans came along. Then I felt i lost this at the time underground artist 4ever & its an absolute "masterPiece"....

I remember eye won a big boom box radio off of a popular urban radio station out here during that time(1982/83). It was an awesome piece of equipment. The 1999 cassette(remember those!). U might of not been born then when they we're out giggle It was b 4 the cd. That 1999 cassette tape stayed in there with my headphones all day & all night. I knew every instrument played & every vocal Prince whispered on that album....20TEN kinda reminds me of that album..

1999 the unreleased song Purple Music is the behind the scene story for this wonder period

Even thought you heard his sound develope throught the albums, this album & What Time Is It & Vanity 6 are the true foundation for Prince's sound

It's also interesting that songs like Jerk Out, New Position, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man had their start in the 1981/82 years (that's W&L) for pulling them up for use

This album period tells a story, sets the scene 4 PR, you hear all kinds of sounds, echoes, almost sounds like he recorded this album in ways that you would feel the streets or even nature in the background

kill B sides

the linn at serious work, wicked guitar solos, Jill Jones, first appearance of Wendy, the noituloveR

the album that created the Triple Threat

My favorites have always been Let's Pretend We Are Married, All the Critics Love U, Free, Automatic & Lady Cab Driver

He took us on a journey

TurnItUp

To Jester: I am a 40 year old female fan of Prince and have been for 28 years and I have really been impressed with you as a young man watching your Youtube video discussions of Prince. I admire your respect and admiration of him and I am really fascinated all the info you know about Prince every detail on his music including the unreleased material. I know it too. That's how much I love him too.

I find it amazing as young as you are, you come across like you've been a fan since Prince came out back in 78 or as long as I've been a fan since 84. Keep up the great discussion videos and keep the MJ posters(lol) on your wall if you want to. We can love them both. I will keep watching your videos as long as you keep posting. As you like to always say at the end of your videos. Peace and be wild.

[Edited 10/17/12 11:52am]

P.S Jester you said just what I was thinking out loud on one of your discussions about his Welcome2 tour where you wish he would stop the Welcome2 shows and start a whole new tour. I agree 100% It's basically the same songs over and over.

AWW! smile I really appreciate this comment! Thank you so very much! I can't tell you enough! I guess you blame it on the purple! People like you, inform me and keep me on my feet about some of the things Prince has been doing at the time. I always learn something new with Prince. Whether t is unreleased material, or the way he switches it up LIVE! I So wish I was there at the time to experience Prince right when all of these motions took place! Prince has my respect and love for future generations to come! smile I got to keep MJ on the wall, he's another one of my inspirations! AND it would be nice if Prince could change it up and give us those rare gems he has recorded. Something tells me he will sometime soon, he has too many to ignore! smile

Regarding the Quincy Jones comment, yea I believe Quincy played 1999 to for Michael and he said he wanted to do something similar with the intro but bigger, and thats how they got the intro for the song Thriller

Jesse, you're so darned likeable...I just know you're going to do special things in the future. Keep your positive attitude, young grasshopper!

I listened to Controversy, followed by 1999 and LRC, on the radio of my first brand new car...a 1981 metallic blue Chevy Chevette. I had just gotten hired as long distance telephone operator by Southern Bell in my hometown of Charleston, SC, and Prince rocked that pop radio station every. single. day. The good old days when the hardest thing for me was to be punctual for work, and remember to save money for a rainy day. This album made the travel to and from that job an amazing, funky ride. Sweet memories... heart

Worst track on there along with All The Critics and Something In The Water. Lady Cab Driver and Free are ok.

The rest is stellar but the weak tracks make it a 7/10 for me.

Alan Leeds: 20 ALBUMS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

Please note the topic carefully. It does NOT say “20 best albums” or even “20 favorite albums”. Thus, my list is merely a reflection of my own journey. So before casting me aside for ignoring more recent music, recognize that my age affords me a long landscape. More importantly, understand that just about every album I have embraced in the past 20 years is somehow BECAUSE of those I’ve listed. If I were younger, my list would surely include Public Enemy, The Roots, D’Angelo, Ndegeocello, J Dilla and Erykah Badu – people whose records I listen to more regularly today than many on this list. It’s also noteworthy that 10 of these albums are “live” performances. That has something to do with discovering many of these albums in the lily white environment of my homestead. As a youngster, all I could do was close my eyes and conjure up images of what it would be like to be in the night club or at the concert – places I had no access to. It also speaks to a personal quirk - I like people more than I like “things”. My only affection for technology is to how it serves people. Thus even my favorite studio recordings basically serve to arouse my curiosity as to how the music would translate to the stage and a live audience. Since there’s no real way to quantify these records, I have listed them chronologically dating from the oldest.

1) HERE’S LITTLE RICHARD (1957)
2) SATCHMO THE GREAT – Louis Armstrong (1958)
3) COUNT BASIE AT BIRDLAND (1960)
4) RAY CHARLES IN PERSON (1960)
5) THELONIUS MONK’S GREATEST HITS (1962)
6) JAZZ WORKSHOP REVISITED – CANNONBALL ADDERLEY SEXTET (1962)
7) HERBIE MANN AT THE VILLAGE GATE (1962)
8) JAMES BROWN LIVE AT THE APOLLO VOL. 1 (1962)
9) DESCARGAS VOL. 3 – THE TICO ALL STARS AT THE VILLAGE GATE (1966)
10) COLD SWEAT – JAMES BROWN (1967)
11) ..74 MILES.. AWAY-WALK TALL – CANNONBALL ADDERLEY (1968)
12) SWEETNIGHTER – WEATHER REPORT (1972)
13) SENTIDO – EDDIE PALMIERI (1973)
14) AGHARTA – MILES DAVIS (1975)
15) PARLIAMENT LIVE – P-FUNK EARTH TOUR (1977)
16) FRESH FRUIT IN FOREIGN PLACES – KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS (1981)

17) 1999 – PRINCE (1982) A confession – I was late coming to Prince. I thought he was just another falsetto slingin’ r&b dandy until a girl friend persuaded me to see the CONTROVERSY tour. Of course I was blown away – not just by his awesome skills as a singer-musician but for his stage show in which every production element was as musical as his band. 1999 became the album that convinced me that he was also a magician in the studio. The dance joints were bangin’ and what a lot of us came to refer to as his “boutique” songs were captivating. At a time when keyboard electronics were rapidly becoming cliché-ish, Prince proved how personable the new technology could become in the right hands.

18) DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES – STING (1985)
19) EYES OPEN – YOUSSOU N’DOUR (1992)
20) SHOKI SHOKI – FEMI KUTI (2000)
