I remember them playing that promo ad countless times on the big screens at the D&P shows when the venues were filling up. They played the promo for Carmens album too if I remember correct. I also remember them playing tracks from the symbol album over the p.a before the D&P shows.

I personally love the album (lots of Prince memories). I moved to Minnesota in Oct 91 when Diamonds and Pearls was just released. My first memories of the prince album was at the D&P warm up show at Glam Slam in Jan 92 and he did Sexy MF and a portion of My Name Is Prince. Later that same night at Paisley Park a dj played the CD versions of Sexy MF, My Name Is Prince, and the Continental. I was still getting used to the new songs on D&P, but always had heard that Prince was always on to the next one by the time one was released.

I picked the perfect time to move when I did. Prince was doing all kinds of stuff for this album. I was able to go to the video shoots for Sexy MF (Mar 92), My Name Is Prince (Summer 92), I Wanna Melt With U (Oct 92), the Ryde Divine (Dec 92), warm up show at Glam Slam (Jan 93), and the Act I tour I went back to Chicago (Apr 93). Prince would also frequent Glam Slam on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with after parties at Paisley Park. Songs from Come started to surface around Spring of 93. The weird thing about hearing new songs was that no one really knew the "official" names of the songs until they were released. prince, Come, and The Gold Experience are definitely my favorites from the 90s.

Sounds cool, so what was it like on the video shoots? was you in the car park playing cards with the band in Sexy MF? What about the My Name Is Prince video - that must have been good to have seen that getting filmed.

This is also when I first got into Prince when I was 16 - after seeing the Gett Off video (the song and half naked girls done the job) I got given a cassette copy of D&P which led to getting the D&P video collection then the Gett Off video special. Not long after The Symbol album and Sexy MF video cassette (I loved the Carmen trailer...scariest female on the planet) were out and I was hooked. Cant believe its 20 years but majority of Symbol has aged well in my opinion (God Created Woman, Love 2 the 9's, Sacrifice of Victor, Damn U, The Max, Sexy MF - still like them now)

For Sexy MF, it was done in the underground parking at Paisley Park. They had made it up to look like a bar on one side. Basically just a lot of standing around pretending we were in a bar. It was cool watching Prince dance and do his parts. For My Name Is Prince, it was the alley scenes that were done outside of Glam Slam MPLS. I Wanna Melt With U was done in the Erotic City room at Glam Slam MPLS. They had hired a bunch of local strippers to be in it. My best memory of that one was nude women walking dogs through the club. eek I ended up on the cutting room floor in all of them though! confused Still fun to be at though. The only thing I ended up seeing myself in was the concert portions of the Beautiful Experience film, front row.

Aye the gold box is a nice wee thing to have, not sure how limited it is though, not very i'm guessing. lol

Not sure about the rest of the world, but early standard copies of the UK cd also had an embossed gold symbol right on the front of the cd box too.

Yes. My CD (US Version) has the title, a gold prince , embossed right on the jewel box.

You're right about the box too, ultimately it turned out to be not very limited at all, much like the Batcan, which is why I put Limited Edition in quotes. That was how it was hyped, though. And, evidently the hype worked on me...

wink

My younger sister had yet another version. It was the standard release, but censored. It didn't have the PMRC warning label on the cover and it was edited for language. I never see used copies of that one anymore.

I like to consider the true "Limited Edition" of prince to be the box with the DJ-aimed picture disc. That one is hard to come by nowadays on eBay and other places. Luckily I got one dirt cheap. lol

Wasn't the picture disc one the standard throughout Europe? I have a US promo one that has the picture disc.

I'm not sure, but it has become a rarity now more than anything. I have a US promo one that was given to radio programmers and DJs. The regular limited edition box had the regular disc with the symbol design.

For some reason, the promo box sounds better mastered than the regular editions. I always found that to be interesting... eek

No, I did not. A reversed sample of what?

Hmm. It was a while ago.

YES, you're right! They so did. That brings back memories of standing at Parkhead Stadium in Glasgow and watching those videos, realising that there was already some excellent music waiting just down the line. It was SO exciting, you really felt like you were in on something special... To hear everyone sing 'You Sexy Motherf****r' was pretty special, as the video was repeated a few times and by the end we all knew the chorus rather well. :-0

I have this as well, in fact I have, I believe 6 copies. A few still sealed. I love this version especially the band image disc print.

I also have the regular version, edit and unedited as well as the French import with a variant version of the symbol printed on the jewel case. The symbol is more brilliant, gold like. I also have the vinyl and the picture disc vinyl and all the singles on tape, cd and 12".

BUT, my most prized version of the symbol album I have is the limited edition "wooden box" set that has the cd and Sexy MF single in the box with the symbol ingrained on the box cover, gold numbered plate and all the booklets. I'll have to take a photo of it. I also have the Diamonds and Pearld "paisley shape" limited edition box set too.

Great album! Funky, Fresh, Rocking and down right a JAM!

While I don't like O+> (B+) as much as I like Diamonds & Pearls (A-), I love how ambitious O+> is, how Prince, as usual, but with a lot of force on this album is not afraid to amalgamate styles. I mean, "My Name Is Prince," "Sexy MF," "Love 2 d 9s," "The Continental," "Three Chains of Gold," and "Sacrifice of Victor" all one one album. I'm sorry, but very few people can do that. It just needs a bit more guitar.

A beautiful mess, is how I think it's described by some.

But an entertaining album nonetheless, with some standout tracks, including the immaculate "And God Created Woman."

Another brilliant masterful concept album that Prince put together also the long form movie that came along with it. I bought the gold covered deluxe edition & loved The beautiful scientologist Kirtsie's contribution & the Arsenio Hall per4mance(Which i attended even though someone tried to escape with Prince's gold gun mic)........

These wooden box promo things are unauthorized. The discs and booklets are legit, but the boxes are not.

I looked at the Symbol album version at a record fair once and I could not believe how crudely it was made.

Me too nod D&P is a good album, but it's also a very "safe" album.Very commercial.

Love Symbol takes more risks.
