Purple Rain = a musical orgasm

I've been listening to Prince for 30 years now. I have always had a great appreciation for this song. But recently as I was driving into Chicago for the concert, I was listening to Ultimate Prince, and when Purple Rain came on, I was floored! It was like I was hearing the song for the first time and it gave me chills. Maybe the defining moment of Prince's whole career and I understand why. The lyrics are vulnerable and real, as is the performance. What a travesty that the single version ends just as the brilliant instrumental coda gets started. That guitar solo builds so much tension up to the point of a huge climax (after the vocal ooh ooh ooh ooh oooh oooh ooohs, which then are mimicked by Prince's guitar) then it all comes to a halt and the massive chord comes crashing down. Squeals and manic bursts of more guitar follow, and then the keys twinkle like stars as you bathe in the afterglow; strings appear and caress and kiss you as everything gently fades into applause....

Nah, just joking. Glad that you can still enjoy the song so fully. I feel the same way about "The Beautiful Ones"
