It's one of the very few tracks on D&P that I like. It was the opening track on the tour too. It was the very first song I ever heard Prince play live.

You should check out the 10 min version on the 30 YOUF comp. It's.....interesting.

What is this: 30 YOUF comp.

??? cool

I love Thunder! I love the production, Prince's vocal just KILLS, and the melody of the chorus reminds me of an old Negro spritual. It also doesn't feel like it belonds on D & P to me for some reason.

Yes sir! woot! headbang

My apology. It's called 30 Years Of Unreleased Funk. It has outtakes and other unreleased tracks in very nice quality.

Also Prince's mega promotion team he put together for this project. was a "MasterPiece" .It gave it three top ten hits for the mega platinum hit 'Diamonds & pearls'. Plus took sells to over 5 million worldwide...It was the basis of prince being resigned to a mega deal with the wb. Even though it ended up not ending well.It proved that prince still could get major hits & sell..Thunder was the perfect song to open this mega hit album...

It's one of those songs that when you -- okay, I -- first heard it, I was all "Whoah, that's awesome! Best track on the album!" You know, it kind of blows you away.

And then 10 or 15 years later, you haven't heard it in awhile, give it a spin, and just think... yeah, it's still impressive, I guess. But good lord, I can't sit through this. It wears my ass the fuck out by being so over-the-top and intricate and noisy and layered.

I can still appreciate it as impressive, but for fuck's sake, I can barely listen to it without it devolving into so much clatter in the space between the speakers and my ears. I don't necessarily need to be assaulted by a maelstrom when I listen to music. Or at least this type of maelstrom.

I really dig "Thunder," but I get what you're saying.

Have you considered that maybe we have simply aged? I have enough stress with traffic, kids, and other commitments, that "stressful" music can be too much for me. Also, music that makes me think. Same with TV or books. I'm not always able to handle something too dense or full of stuff. Remember being a kid and looking at your elders thinking why do they listen to that "easy listening" old people music? lol

But a lot of his '90s stuff was over-the-top and very heady, even chaotic. Increasingly it seemed his music was reflecting his inner life, or vice versa.

I'm a fan of his '90s work.

Like so many things from 1991 or whatever...it's dated and embarrassing.

To me it sounds like he's really struggling to define his identity in the 90s, and it's uncomfortable to listen to.

Diamonds and Pearls was the first Prince album I owned and this was my favourite track off of it, so many fond memories! Love the guitar!

It was the song that made me a fan of Prince.

I had loved Prince songs before but never really put two and two together to realise they were all the same guy for some reason. They were all 7"s from my brothers collection but when Thunder came on the radio that's it I was hooked for life.

I love the energy of this track and it's positive, uplifting vibe. It's the first track I ever heard live and to see him rise out of that stage in the perspex tube, surrounded by dry ice...well, the thought still gives me goosebumps.

Them were the days!

LOVE it. The harmonies from the "choir" are hauntingly beautiful. And the guitar break kicks ass (even if it is WAY too short).

I love this song! I rank it third behind Live 4 Love and Gett Off as far as my favs go. Musically, it's all over the map and so intriguing. I love the array of guitars and drums and keyboards and everything else. Kinda has that Trans Siberian Orchestra vibe if you know what I mean, very theatrical. I love listening to it at night or on a rainy day. I also think it is a very stronger opening to the album.
