Because Madonna remained with a major . Point blank.

If Prince remained on a major, he would have his output marketed still, concert sponsorship, etc etc. He would not have went off the grid so to speak which would have put him up there on the "so n so has a new one and here's the first single" level of awareness. This would have proven to make several songs as top 20 hits, keeping him just as relevant as Madonna and others.

To be on Madonnas level you have to be part of the machine..all the time.

Prince had brass balls to do what he did.

Emancipation89

While I think $250/$650 million whatever the amount they're talking about is nothing but a rough estimate by so-called "experts" - (who btw, Forbes estimated her net worth to be $325 in 2007, quite impressive how she doubled the amount in only 5 years, even after the divorce settlement and all that don't u think?) - I don't think it's surprising or hard to figure out why Madonna's got more $$$ than Prince. MJ and Madonna have been making more radio friendly, commercially-oriented music than Prince which explains why they sold more albums, why their concert tickets are more expensive and actually, let's just think about the amount of money they must've earned from endorsements alone.. eek

I tend to agree with most of the posts above - it's true they had very different approach to creating albums compared to Prince. Though a lot of people, essentially will only care about the outcome - as long as the album is excellent, they won't care too much about artist's attitude or the creative process behind.

yeah it was fantastic to be a fan in the 80's.

Prince was a chameleon, with his ever changing images and styles, Prince = delivering 9 excellent albums in 1 decade (and incl. 2 double albums), I count The Black Album as a 87 album, even it wasn't release until 94.

(no artist has been that prolific in 1 decade ever before or ever since, as far as I am aware, not even The Beatles).

80 Dirty Mind

81 Controversy

82 1999

84 Purple Rain

85 Around The World

86 Parade

87 Sign O' The Times

88 Lovesexy

(The Black Album) the bootleg(s) = was a major succes in the purple underground in 88

89 Batman

82 Thriller

87 Bad

MJ did only release 2 fantastic and excellent pop album in the eighties.

I have never liked Madonna, her album "Like A Prayer" would be her only "good": imo.

And dont forget...

81 The Time

82 Vanity 6

82 What Time Is It?

84 The Glamorous Life

84 Ice Cream Castle

85 Romance 1600

85 The Family

86 Madhouse 8

87 Jill Jones

87 Madhouse 16

Simply put, there's a big difference between an artist and a pop star.

as a performer, Johnny Mathis is 2nd to none in one or more decades : http://www.discogs.com/ar...leases_All

about the BIG 3 : MJ will remain the #1 by far ,with only 2 albums, SURE !but on the one hand : Thriller shook the planet as an earthquake as you know (don't need to give figures) ; on the other hand , The Bad TOur included 123 concerts to 4.4 million fans across 15 countries. At the Time , he could strike 21 sold out concerts in a row only at Wembley (instead, he only did 7) The tour grossed $125 million ($247 million in 2012 currency , still the biggest grossing in the history for a single act). In the early 90s , he achieved another path with Dangerous (the best selling album in the world outside the US; still today)

when you said Big 3, big 4 ... you talk about Figures , and MJ has always Meant THE BIGGEST in this field.

Even though I love Prince more than any artist, Madonna was able to do something after the 80's andn 90's, that Prince wasn't able to... She remained *relevant*. For a 50+ year old artist who always aimed for the charts, I think it's an amazing feet, and she doesn't deserve the disrepect she gets a lot.

this is true

it reflected a lot of her being still connect and involved in 'everyday life' and social life

she challenged things addressed thing exposed things and that is a big part of what 'artists' do

Michael & Prince became very detached from 'everyday life' in the 1990s... Madonna still washes her own dishes and cleans up her own house vs P & MJ having someone do it for them (not saying one is bad or good) but shes very much in living, even her spiritual/religious searchings were a lot more touchable to people doing the same

Some of this could be the result of gender

You can't be still relevant and a part of pop culture still be in high demand by the top fashion designers and photographers as well us up coming dj and underground producers and not have talent and smarts. showing boob or butt doesn't do that

lol I would say Michael having started out so young being a vessel 4 fame via his father was probably the one that didn't do it for the approval of others(outside 'FATHER') or for money

Who doesn't want to make money, Prince was poor and living home 2 home in Minneapolis and Madonna left home moved to NYC and lived poor ... so Money would have to be a part of it, nothing wrong with it

Ok, Madonna managed 2 stay in the picture but what she did on this last

tour could destroy that legacy....a lot of people thought it was silly 2 show "flesh" 4 a +50y old artist!!!! I think Prince gets more respect 4 his talent these days, thanx 2 his concerts

and musicianship.

I'm not sure how "staying relevant" has 2 do with making good music. Madonna has 3 or 4 songs in her whole career that I'd actually listen 2.

Madonna is worth more than Prince because she has a very different approach to her work.

Prince will just record and record and record and release 10% if that of what he did then when it finally see's the light of day tosses it aside as he's got another idea in his head. He will think nothing of spending a million bucks on something that will never see the light of day.

Madonna famously is a scheduled task master who is constantly thinking about the cost of making the album and how to make it as profitable as possible. She's good at taking an idea and distiling it into a commercialy viable product that still holds the original point of the art. This is how she is consistantly making bigger profits

Prince makes it and puts it out with seemingly little editorial process or regard for commercial viablility.

I love them both and think they are both amazing perfomers artists and songwritters but they approach it in a very different way.

Princes approach to his label was mearly to get more of his songs released wether it made a profit or not. Madonna had nothing beyond executive involvment in the acts her label distributed and was more like a gallery curator than the all controlling svengali Prince was.

Horses for courses that has produced two very succesfull, rewarding and interesting careers

Very interesting assessment!

"There's something about those movies, I have to say, that is very endearing . I don't think that the acting is so great a lot of the times, but it has that excitement of youth, that I go, 'Yeah I get that!'" Andrew McCarthy (St Elmo's Fire, Pretty In Pink etc)

This is who I feel about the Big 3 and the 1980s

yeah it was fantastic to be a fan in the 80's.

Prince was a chameleon, with his ever changing images and styles, Prince = delivering 9 excellent albums in 1 decade (and incl. 2 double albums), I count The Black Album as a 87 album, even it wasn't release until 94.

(no artist has been that prolific in 1 decade ever before or ever since, as far as I am aware, not even The Beatles).

80 Dirty Mind

81 Controversy

82 1999

84 Purple Rain

85 Around The World

86 Parade

87 Sign O' The Times

88 Lovesexy

(The Black Album) the bootleg(s) = was a major succes in the purple underground in 88

89 Batman

82 Thriller

87 Bad

MJ did only release 2 fantastic and excellent pop album in the eighties.

I have never liked Madonna, her album "Like A Prayer" would be her only "good": imo.

And dont forget...

81 The Time

82 Vanity 6

82 What Time Is It?

84 The Glamorous Life

84 Ice Cream Castle

85 Romance 1600

85 The Family

86 Madhouse 8

87 Jill Jones

87 Madhouse 16

Simply put, there's a big difference between an artist and a pop star.

"Simply put, there's a big difference between an artist and a pop star." - Very good statement IMO. Good Show Stoned!

in general, i think the more naturally gifted you are, the less willing you are to compromising your talent. and so the less universal and marketable you become.

which is to say the really gifted artists are never the richest. and money really doesn't matter as far as art goes.

So do some of you all think it really matters to own your masters?

Why wouldn't they? There's money involved.

Also it's not hard to see about the fortunes of the always-mentioned threesome and their outcomes. It's become a broken record to discuss this really.
