Some gorgeous moments, but as a whole it isn't put together that well. A bit of a mixed bag, really. People tend to go "wow" each time they hear a symphonic orchestra used on a pop record, but once you listen to those pieces a bit closely they don't really remind of classical music. But, yeah, I'm glad that he experimented with something like that in any case. Not everything has to sound like "DMSR" or "Kiss" in Prince's catalog.

And at least it's not as bad as "Bohemian Rhapsody". mr.green

it's an interesting song.It should have been the final song on the 'Love Symbol' album, instead of "Sacrifice Of Victor".

Nah. Ending an album with an orchestral piece is quite a cliché. "The Sacrifice Victor" was a more interesting choice as the concluding number.

Hardly compares to Morning Papers though does it.

One thing about this album that I do really like is his guitar playing. His distorted soloing is quite enjoyable and works on most of the tracks which makes a change. He never shows much subtetly once he hits the distortion pedal but for some reason, over this album, it works better than usual. Especially the way he gets it to squeal at the end of The Morning Papers. Always sounds nice when you make your guitar scream.

I really wish he'd fix the grammar there. It irks me.

I like 3 Chains of Gold. I understand the hate for this song. It's obviously his take on Bohemian Rhapsody, done Prince style, and had the symbol album had stronger concept execution, it would have worked better.

The orchestral moments in the song are gorgeous.

and please understand some of his fans didn't really have much of a clue about Queen outside of Another One Bites The Dust, his black fans likely never even heard Bohemian Rhapsody, I didn't really hear it until that movie came out. BTW, the grammer there is wrong? I'm not too sharp on the Eng 101, should it be me?

"Between you and I" is the way the phrase is used in old literary works. Not unfitting for a piece like "3 Chains O' Gold".

It might be the case that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was sort of forgotten until it started to gain wider recognition in the early-90s. It was used in the movie Wayne's World and was of course one of those songs that got played everywhere after Freddie Mercury's death.

Nominative case : You and me

Take for example:

She likes you.

She likes me.

Therefore, she likes you and me.

NOT:

She likes you.

She likes I.

She likes you and I.

You will see things like this in literature: "We have no choice, you and I, but to obey our instructions." But, that's not nominative case nor does it require it there.

Had Mayte said, "Nothing should come between us, you and I."--that would have been correct.

It doesn't ruin the song, but still irks the crap out of me.

I know its grammatically correct to say "between you and me" (because someone apparently decided so), but I think the reason why people end up saying "between you and I" is because a lot of people treat the words "you" and "I" like they would be names (much like the word "ego", as used in psychology, really just stands for the word "I"). Sort of infantile, I guess. Grammatically incorrect phrases have their uses in art if you want to emphasize something, in any case.

Probably a meaningless observation but it just came up on shuffle and I conted the distinct segments of the song. There are 7 musically different parts. I wonder if this was on purpose and meant to feed into the narrative of the story. 7 sides of Prince ala the ones he kills off in the 7 video. Just a thought. Probably an over analysis.

no it's not, sacrifice of victor and all of that, and his later saying he had another person inside him and didn't know what gender it was. could be. I think I always got that vibe too, parts of his persona at odds with itself.

But the fact that he hasn't appeared in a thread that contains the word "masterpiece" in the subject is very strange.

Perhaps he felt that he wasn't needed - it's usually his job to run into every other thread and declare rehearsals and radio singles that never even got a proper release to each be a "MasterPiece", etc...

Note that if he were here, this post would be met simply with rolleyes - an emoticon that appropriately rounds out his extensive vocabulary.

You will see things like this in literature: "We have no choice, you and I, but to obey our instructions." But, that's not nominative case nor does it require it there.

[Edited 9/27/12 20:54pm]

The way you interpret this line, you're of course correct. However, I don't agree entirely, because there's a way this could very well be used as a nominative.

If you take "you and I" as a unit and not two seperate entities/people, it becomes "nothing should come between what you and I represent" (sort of).

The thing is, logically, you need two entities for something to be able to "come between" them; however, in this case, it would basically say "nothing should disturb this one thing - you and I".

That's why, in my opinion, the nominative use of "you and I" is OK.

Nothing should come between "us".

Us is nominative, and "you and I" is still incorrect even when viewed as a singular entity or "idea" replacing us. "You and me" replaces us. You and I replaces we. There isn't any other acceptable use of it in English for nominative case.

Again, just think of nominative case single entities like "me", "him", etc. It's not the way you view it as singular or plural--ie, as an idea or a collection of nouns--it's the fact that it isn't ever nominative, and therefore is always wrong when used as such.
