How do you feel about the 'Come' album?

Last Friday it was my birthday and a present I got was a Visa gift card. I took that and went to the mall and to FYE. I bought that album along with the Batman soundtrack and Graffiti Bridge (Movie.)

I didn't listen to the entire thing yet but some of my favorite songs are, Loose, Papa, and Dark.

I LOVE the Papa song. Considering that its a pretty sad song I feel like there might be a little something wrong with me for playing it at least fifteen times in the past couple of days, multiple times a day. But I can relate. But the entire sound of it, the tone and everything I just love.

I like the edgy sound of Loose, and the kind of nostalgic, wounded sound of Dark. Love the horns in that song too.

The rest of it I haven't really listened to, aside from Solo. Does anyone want to elaborate on the theme of this album? And do you guys like it? I know a lot of you seem to kinda prefer his 80's work but I'm curious to hear your reflections on it.

Thanks Chocolate, ^^ and happy early B day to you.

lol Laura, I can imagine a person dancing down the aisles in the store and dancing to Loose. It is a really funky tune though...that can make you get, well, Loose. And Come is another good one its pretty rockin although it gets to be a little bit...much for me at certain points. lol

I'm listening to Pheromone now & will give Space and Letitgo a listen in just a second.

Over-all a very good, bit of a "dark horse" album

Classic: Come, Space, Letitgo

Very Good: Pheromone,Loose,Dark, Race

Good: Papa

Miss: Solo, Orgasm

As an aside i really love the Space CD single too, superb remixes on that one!

We're here, might as well get into it.

Love it!

The title track is fantastic. The outtake versions are sweet too. Wish they'd all come out on 12"

I also love Loose, Race, Dark & Letitgo.

Space, Pheromone & Papa are good.

I could do without Solo & Orgasm.

Nice to see some props to Loose on here. I thought most Prince fans hated it...

cool

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

I'm sorry about this in advance...But what is with people asking about albums they actually have, but haven't listened to yet!? If you have the album, listen to the full thing yourself! Then, you can form your own opinion about it....disbelief.

Just another album to get rid of his deal
Papa is good, and I like Race and Dark too, but overall an average LP.

I'm not a fan of the version of Come that ended up on the album. I would have preferred the Beautiful Experience version. This project started out as Glam Slam Ulysses and the album should have included all of those songs...Strays Of The World, Dolphin, Interactive, What's My Name, Endorphinemachine, and Pope. Great 90's album though and lots of videos from it.

one of his most challenging/personal albums, his "midlife crisis" album, in my opinion (more than Emancipation or Rave)

at its best, Come has some of the best tracks he ever did (Come, Space, Dark, Letitgo), and the 90s R&B touches actually worked; and the album def works as a "who am I, and where do I go from here?"

at its worst, some of the songs are f weird (and Loose! was an indication that Prince would release some god-awful songs after 1995), and there are some great vault tracks from the era that should have been included; also, the album was too sad and dark to be a hit; the RIP title/change of name affair didn't help either; for the casual fan/simple observer, I guess this was the point where Prince "lost it"...

His last great album for me, although I do much prefer the previous versions of the title track. That would have made an excellent maxi-single, with 18 & Over and suchlike on there.

The best Prince album of the 90's period! Graffiti Bridge doesn't count to me as a 90's album since it was a collection of 80's songs.

I'm kind of surprised by the things I've just read here. A lot of you seem to like the album which was more than I thought. I know it's been said that Come was too dark to sell but what about The Black Album? weren't a lot of people clamoring to get their hands on that or was that strictly the fan, fans not the casual ones?

I kind of feel that if Prince had promoted it more then the album could have been more sucessful. I wonder why he took the time to record/compile everything and then kind of just sat back and was like "Well, there you go. Do what you want with it." I find myself intrigued by the overall sound of the album and like you guys said the darkness of it. It seems to be almost supressed in some ways when you think about it.

The design of the album is interesting too, the gray and white tones and the lack of a lyric book and photos. Not to get all psychological but the way everything looms over Prince, the fence, the building catches my attention too.

Does anyone really like Solo? So far no ones really talked about that one.

to my ears is one of the "f weird" songs I was talking about; Prince at his most depressing/depressed; respectable track though...

I love the whole dark, brooding vibe of the album. It's really a beautiful album. My fave songs are Come, Race, Letitgo and Space. cool

I'm surprised how kind time has been to this album. When it came out I waited outside the store at 9AM, eager to get my hands on it. I'd recently gotten into bootlegs and knew about Endorphinemachine and all the new songs he was playing...but NONE of those were on it. There was no hit to rally around, no real promotion, and seemingly no interest from Prince himself. I wanted my 15 bucks back and felt (for the first time) ripped off by my favorite artist. In fact, I actually stopped listening to him for a while. Until Gold Experience brought me back a year later.

Now however, with a lot of hindsight and quite a huge stack of albums afterwards, I can see Come in a new light. Yes it was a contractual throw away, but I think it also has a better ratio of good tracks than some of the later albums that Prince has promoted much more.

A good, but not great, little album. And for whatever reason, I think time will continue to be friendly to this one, perhaps even more than some of the bigger releases from that decade. Turns out it just might have been worth that 15 bucks after all. Go figure.
