I'm wondering how so many of you have a problem with the lyrics.

All Prince is saying is that people falsely use God as a reason for greedy, devious, and violent acts.

Do you disagree with this?

Towards the end, he then calls them all out by saying, "...call it what you want it, (ex)cept an Act of God".

GREAT MESSAGE.

Funny, I don't even pay attention to the lyrics any more. It's the music and the performance that I dislike now.

I was wondering the same thing! I thought maybe I misinterpted the song lol. It seems that some folks have an aversion to religion/God no matter what the context. A very knee-jerk reaction. I'm not a believer myself but I'm not anti-religion either.

Those lyrics suck. Just a bunch of conspiracy theory bumper sticker slogans strung together. Deep shit for morons but for people with half a brain the situation is infinitely more nuanced than he is capable of accepting. Again, being good at music doesn't necessarily mean you know shit about other things.

Prince has a lot in common with his hero Alex Jones. They both observe things that are actually happening but attribute them entities that are almost always imaginary.

"People with half a brain" (as you say, including yourself as having half a brain) realize the difference between song lyrics and a socio-political discourse.

It's a song, and part of the art (and challenge) of lyric writing is to find a simplified, structured way of saying something, much like poetry.

I'm quite curious as to how you view the song "Sign O' The Times", as the lyrics are far more simplified than "Act Of God", and only carry a fraction of the statements Prince makes in the latter.

Other than that, you have a problem with Prince calling out George W Bush for his whole WMD ruse to get Saddam?

Do you have an issue with Prince calling out anyone who uses God as a reason for greedy, devious, and violent acts?

Pretty damn good subject matter, if you ask me.

I love the music and the chant, "Call it what you want to cept an act of God", and there is that sound in the music towards the front and end for a few seconds that make me think of the video game Galaga. I guess something that kinda bothers me...and I know its petty...is that he uses the line "freedom aint free" in this song, and in Lavaux, he says "freedom is anything but free". For songs that run back to back basically, it just sounds like he is repeating lyrics to fill the verse out. Then again, he could be reeeeaaaaalllllly trying to force the freedom ain't free idea.

Nay. The kind of song that strikes you as fierce upon the first few listens but is really weak the more it sinks in. The kind of material that washed up disco queens of the '70s were doing by the mid '80s. Lot of attitude but nothing else to recommend it as a song in its own right.

nod My thoughts exactly!!

When I first listened to 20TEN, it was the first song I latched onto. I couldn't get enough of it.

Nowadays, it's a different story to say the least .. I can't get through the entire song without forcing myself.

Now I've heard it all. SOTT is "simplified" compared to Act of God. Ha! SOTT is mature, thoughtful, and poetic. Nothing on Act of God approaches "In France a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name." Act of God is juvenile, simplistic, and naive.

I disagree. Act of God is a powerful song. Of course it isn't as hard-hitting as SOTT but it's a hit in its own right and the lyrics are a definite plus. smile

Subject matter has nothing to do with it. I'm not talking about the message. I'm talking about the delivery. There are a million ways to say, (and very simply, if you believe that is what makes a song lyric have value) freedom ain't free. It's called sloganeering and it is not subtle, simple, (but it is simple-minded) OR creative. Anyone can stitch a bunch of right-wing, patriotic and/or Alex Jones bumper stickers together to make a protest song.

I have HUGE issues with people using religion in any way to further a political agenda. I don't have a problem with the MESSAGE. I'm talking about the skill in conveying the message. A chair from Ikea will support your ass when you sit down. It doesn't make that chair, (the message) equal to a hand-made chair crafted by a real woodworking artist.

Don't bring your quarter of a brain to a half a brain fight.

Simple or not, (not) at least SOTT was in his own words.

Alex Jones calls out George Bush, too. If you were to flag down 99.99% of drivers with a "Freedom Isn't Free" bumper sticker and ask them who they vote for, they will tell you WHOEVER THE REPUBLICAN IS. This is fact. Exceptions exist, of course, but since the Republicans tend to support war and "The Blood of Tyrants and Patriots" is the price of freedom, THAT'S how I see the message as right-wing and/or patriotic.

Read about Alex Jones. He is oppsed to both Republicans AND Democrats, (as most conspiracy/chemtrail types are because they believe both parties are part of the same shadow government and the opposing parties are just distracting us while they do their evil). The URL www.prince.com used to re-direct to one of Alex Jones' conspiracy sites. Odd.

Of course, both parties ARE the same. Prince and Alex Jones are right about a great deal of things, they just mistaken believge that it's all caused by gods and boogie men.

Maybe...but the lyrics including God doesn´t fit the "funky" music imo.

in the context of the album it's good but in the context of all the great music out there it is awful - if that makes sense. If this was P at his peak it would have been a goodish B-Side.
