I think if people are whiny and offended by lyrics (sex, religion, etc) then they shouldn't play the track. It's that simple.

Offended? No. Disappointed? Yes. When the spirituality and politics of his music went from inclusive and uplifting to divisive and pejorative.

It's stupid as shit to get offended by a song. For that matter, nothing Prince has said has ever been offensive.

I don't believe that.

Believe it.

Back in the 80's, Prince's god was a sexy god. It was ok to have a lot of nasty sex, that was actually a way to get closer to god (ie lovesexy)

But after the incident with P's son and turning to Larry Graham, Prince's ideas about god became rigidly traditional (yawn) and he started preaching AT people. When he started saying Ab Lincoln was a racist, that was sort of a (stupid) offensive moment. The whole 'Mr. Rosenblum' thing on Rainbow children was really lame. I just don't like that stuff. It's a shame it's so tolerated while if you say anything bad about religion you get all types of people crawling up your butt

This is fair enough, and to an extent I agree - but there was always that hardline fundamental edge to the spirtual/carnal duality - all the redemption stuff in Purple Rain, Temptation, Lovesexy, PR and LS tours, Graffiti Bridge -Obviously Prince was playing up one side when it suited him and gave the other side a louder voice when he was at his lowest ebb.

ok, well just plug avalanche into search and see what you get. I think it's one of his last truly great songs myself but it's obvious that a lot of his white fans were pissed at him over it. To be honest, the lyrics do take some liberties but the man's aim was true and the song was phenomenal. P.S. I just checked and in two seconds I've seen "I hate it" and "it's gutter trash", of course, white people being the wordsmiths they are are going to say "well that doesn't mean offended yada yada yada" whatever...

'Animal Kingdom' is really the only song Prince ever made that I had a problem with lyrically, just because of how pompous he comes off imo. Not everybody can afford to eat ultra healthy, so to make a song like that when he can afford to eat as healthy as he wants was a tad bit going too far [albeit funny too lol]. I'm not a fan of Rainbow Children's lyrics for the most part, but I don't find them offensive..... lol

So those in the hood have corner stores packed with veggies, huh? Okay.... neutral

Vegetables are the most important parts...& I've never seen soy milk in the hood either. To do it properly, you do need to have the $ to afford certain things for healthy eating....

Well, I'm living in europe, we don't have "hoods" here. But every discount supermarket even in poorer regions has at least soy milk.

Avalanche is one of my favortie songs by Prince of ALL TIME. I don't have to agree in particular with the Lincoln part, but that's what I love about Prince,he's not afraid to throw in some controversy. But the metaphor of the song in those two core ideas, the White appropriation of Black music and then the White on Native American massacre at Wounded Knew... that was strong to me. It also speaks of the the innocence of an avalanche. An avalanche doesn't mean to crush things, it just happens because of it's sheer numbers and weight naturally. And the idea of snowflakes individually as these cool things but all together forming a destructive force... seems really well made.

Plus the melody and music is STRONG. And reminds me of the intro to The Stranger by Billy Joel.

The Rainbow Children and it's ridiculous ideas about women being the property of men. That bullshit about the holocaust being bad BUT it's perhpas better to be dead that sold. Pussy. I'd rather be sold. Where there's life there's hope. You can escape being "owned" by someone. There's hope. Death is different, especially being starved, gassed and/or cooked in an oven. Also, shot like livestock with mad cow. Fuck a bunch of Prince's stupid ass. That asshole has always got to be righteously indignant about something, even if he has to manufacture the emotion.

Yeah, we get it. You have to have it worse than everyone else so you can feel like you've overcome more than everyone else.

It's all EGO, bud. It's never went away, it just got more subtle, (to you).

Somehow, being the hardcore biblical scholar that Prince thinks himself to be, he failed to remember that the Jews also have a history of being slaves on top of going through the Holocaust.

^Yeah, TRC showed me how narrow and Naive Prince's world view really is (or at least had become). A lot of the record is pretty embarrassing the more you think about it.

Belittling the hallocaust was a REAL low point, and comparing it against slavery, I just don't get why anyone would make that comparison in the first place. I really don't get what Prince's beef is with Jews? Did the Jews break his family apart and throw him out of his house? Were the executives at Warner Jewish? It just seems silly to me.

And with the whole victim mentality thing (IE oh poor me, my people have suffered so bad at the hands of fill in the blank), it's dis-empowering and making excuses for not doing anything with your life and improving your situation. People have been discriminating against other people since the dawn of time, but right here right now, most people get a pretty fair shake at working hard and being successful, which is all anyone can ask for. Check out the earliest photos where you can see signs that say "Irish need not apply" how many Irish Americans do you see complaining that they were discriminated against?

I'm all for equel rights and I'm for punishment of REAL discrimination, but this was just Prince acting like an ass

To be fair with Prince here, he did say:

Holocaust aside

Thereby claiming NO comparison.

However, by simply mentioning he is making NO comparison the average listener will make it.

I'm not sure of the lyrics you're referring to but speak for yourself. I'd rather be dead than a slave. You look at a lot of native americans, they may not whine, cry, bitch but that's because a lot of them are so far gone they don't care anymore, those are my people. Well at least we are seeing that some of his sentiments offend some of you and they aren't the nasty things which I'm sure the ts meant. I don't think those things bother his fans or he would have lost us a long fucking time ago.

He's done some good work but in my mind, for me, that's his last truly great song. I didn't like the John Hammond part but I did learn that Hammond was not the saint I thought he was in a thread about avalanche. Still, it takes a little away when the narrative is off, Ellington didn't deal with Hammond much at all let alone get ripped off by him.

I don't know about the anti-semitism, never understood when black people got into it. Recently, Terence trent D'arby/Sananda Maitreya had some blogs where he talked about Jewish conspiracies, I was surprised hearing that kind of crap from him. But to say Prince is wrong for "belitlling" the holocaust would make a lot of people wrong because lots and lots of people said the same thing. Truth of the matter, people don't always treat each other so good and many groups have suffered losses in the millions in one way or another. Jews have managed to, well, I hate to say milk it, but no other term comes to mind right now. We have holocaust museums, exhibits and all kinds of stuff, the Native Americans were targeted for genocide, no ifs ands or buts and we don't have anywhere near the kind press that the holocaust gets. You are correct however, people just ain't so good to each other, none of us. personally, I don't think the species will make it like this.
