Why did Prince disappear?

I heard Prince the other day say that he was in "Music Rehab." That he just needed a little break from recording for a while.

Yes, because, as Prince told Regis "look what happened to Amy Winehouse. No, no, no, that was just sad."

Prince said he in "recording rehab", not "music rehab"...

He said that he will not release anything until things change with regards to regulating illegal and/or free downloading/filesharing.

I think there are other factors.

He's likely exhausted most forms of distribution, since he has now explored many creative ways of distributing his music.

He also likely to have decided that it just isn't worth it, since his own fanbase can't seem to grasp the brilliance of some of his recent releases, with the best example being the 'Lotusflow3r' album.

The album '20ten' appears to be a shortened version of something he had big plans for, but fell through. Hence, he decided to just "give it away" via a UK newspaper in abridged form.

Maybe it's simply like some sort of therapy for him. Ironically, the gift of musical ability (like many art forms) creates a situation where the gift is like therapy, but a break from the gift is sometimes necessary therapy as well.

He has been very active with touring recently... practically around the World, and nearly selling out tickets everywhere he plays.

He loves playing live, makes a lot of money playing live, and could be setting the stage for a broader recognition (or refresh course), in anticipation for a major album release.

One thing is for certain... This has been one of the longest droughts in Prince history.

You summarized my points quite well! smile Amen to what is said above, and we'll just have to wait till the time comes along....I am really starting to believe Prince doesn't believe in time, because this drought seems like forever..But as you mentioned he has been active and that goes a long way! smile

Everybody needs to recharge their batteries. Also he said he was getting attacks of vertigo so i'ts probably a good thing for him to just sit back and rest a bit

When and where did he state this? I think he said it on Lopez's show, but Regis? Was this on Live with Regis and Kelly?

He's made this comment before when he was with Mayte, on the Today show with Bryant Gumbel I believe.

The poor little guy probably wants to sit back & enjoy life for a little bit. Plus don't forget Andy's album is coming out this year. I know it's Andy, not Prince, but he still had his hand in creating this album. So we'll get our Prince fix from that.
Also, if he releases an album this year he'll be stealing Andy's thunder & jeopardize her record sales. So maybe he's waiting til next year to give us some candy.
...but I already had my candy when he came to Australia. It was nice too nom nom lol

I agree that he most likely had bigger plans for it, but he didn't just "give it away" - the newspapers did, but he got paid. Given the way the music industry is at the moment (and, more importantly, his perspective of it at the moment), it was probably a smart move, as he got paid up front and then people could do what they liked with the CD - keep it, sell it on eBay, etc... He already had his money.

This is an interesting point. He hasn't had a lot of success with his proteges and maybe this is him trying something new; ie. Ensuring there is a decent amount of time between his last release and Andy's, so hungry Prince fans that may not necessarily have bought a protege album will take whatever they can get, meaning more people listening to Andy that maybe wouldn't have given her album a chance if they were still busy feasting on a new Prince album.

That said, I guess it's still possible that he'll release something along with Superconductor (ie. Lotusflow3r style), but that seems unlikely at this point.

I too got plenty of candy in Oz last month, so I'm hoping for the purple longshot, which is a top quality live album/DVD from his Australian tour.

In Prince's case, touring usually brings him some ideas for what he wants to record but he may not be in such a mood as of late.

If you were talking and heard him say this- then he didn't really disappear? Why didn't you ask him then why he was disappearing?

OK- seriously though he's touring a lot and that seems like enough for the masses. Maybe he will just stay on tour forever?

Prince is not really a bi-racial midget like some people say. Prince is actually a leprechaun with a dark tan. This is the secret to his financial longevity—every now and then he goes back to Ireland, shows his people his “unreleased” films from the vault, and they love that shit so much that they give him a new poit of gold. And then he spends the gold on more concept videos about camels dancing on the frozen surface of lake Minnetonka.

Yeah, record sales will have a small percentage that is Andy's existing fan base, a tiny percentage of random purchases and the majority will no doubt be Prince fans.

On the other side, there are three groups of Prince fans - the ones that buy everything, including the protege albums, regardless; the ones who refuse to buy any protege albums (or almost any), regardless; and then a third, fence-sitting group that could go either way - and I'm thinking that's the group they might be targeting by holding off on any Prince releases until Superconductor comes out.

Of course, he might really be taking a break or, more likely, waiting for the magic solution to the music industry's problems to come along.
