Overlooked details on bad albums

In Prince's catalog there are albums less popular in his fan base,Fans tend to dismiss some albums due to a personal dislike or popular opinion .But even those albums have some great things going on.20Ten contains some of the best rhythm guitar playing ,New Power Soul have some intricate horn charts .so let's talk about the overlooked details on so called worst albums

The symbol album has some great ballads. As a whole, it's self-indulgent and overproduced, but Damn U, And God Created Woman, Sweet Baby, The Morning Papers and even Blue Light are all great songs.

If this thread goes on just about any album except for a few albums from the 80s are going to be mentioned as "bad albums". I like the idea of this thread, but too many orgers just use threads like these just as an opportunity to bash an album that was generally well-received, but they dislike for some personal reason.

Having said that, I agree with the horns on NPS and some of the orchestral stuff really lifts up a few songs on Rave ("The Sun, The Moon and The Stars", "Silly Game"). Many seem to overlook the Batman album and consider it as just pop fluff, but there are some really great arrangements and plain weird things on it. It has Prince's musical genius all over it. Just that type of uniqueness that is hard to put into words.

When all is said and done - music is about personal taste. What some may see as a "bad" album, others may see as a masterpiece.

As mentioned in the initial post, there is a consensus of opinion on here as to what the "weaker" Prince albums are, but in my opinion, even the Prince albums I like the least still have one or two numbers that I consider to be essential to my playlists.

Example being New Power Soul (ok an NPG album supposedly), an album that rarely gets a spin in my house, however I could not live without "Come On" or "The One".

"Rave" is another album that does not really float my boat, but does contain in my opinion, two of Prince's greatest ballads, Man 'O'War and "I Love U But Eye don't Trust U Anymore".

Little? Yeah, right. It might be little but it's loud

I love "Avalanche" and "Pearls Before the Swine" on One Night Alone, but don't care much for any of the other tracks.

I agree. These songs are the only reason I haven't played Frisbee with that CD by now.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Most folks called NEWs a bad release.

I happen to love the opening of WEST. Its so melancholic and seems like an after orgasm or refractory period music. A warm Satruday afternoon vibe.

Oft course theres Wasted Kisses from NPS. Wasted Kisses is hot. Its one of his essence of purple songs imo.

Some folks feel Planet Earth is a bad release. Maybe so but the lemotion in the line "Somebody, somwhere put you down, but thats okay..THAT'Ss okay" is worth the whole record if you ask me.

Batman was ultimately forced and to me so many songs uninspired. But Vicky Waiting of course is a fan faviorite. The song sounds like it is "floating" if that makes any sense. Worth the price of the record.

Reflection from Musicology is on some self reflecting Wally type vibe thats rare for him showing his vunerability and feelings in a aw manner. An album of Reflection type songs would be so awesome. The ending of A MillionDays also reminds me of the grit and power of Endorphin Machine.

Emancipation is the Prince album that I love to hate, so I'll try to find a few things to like about it...

  • The lead keyboard sound on In This Bed is pretty great
  • I like Betcha By Golly Wow. I certainly don't think it helped him as a single, but it's very pretty
  • That guitar at the beginning of One of Us

But of any Prince album, this one has the most songs that I have selected 'skip when shuffling' in iTunes. And I never play the full album, which means I may never hear We Gets Up again in my life.

And that makes me happy. cool

Adorecream

Good thread idea, I like something on every album, no album is complete dross.

Take Newpowersoul, Come On is an amazing track, hes having fun and then theres the one, a lovely ballad.

Chaos and Disorders 1st 6 songs are pretty great, the first three trax are excellent, I like it there has great lyrix, Dinner with Delores is a classic pop single. I love the rock sound of the album too, some of the guitar on Chaos and Disorder, I like it there, I rock therefore I am is amazing. Plus you have the funky core of Prince, Sonny T on bass and Michael Bland pounding the heck out of the drums on that album. Chaos and Disorder was really their great trio moment. Its the bass and drums that dominate most of the first side and the first half of side 2.

I really love The Last December on Rainbow children a sweeping and emotional ballad and of course, She loves me for me, wow the simplicity and style of that song.

Batman has the brilliant opening pair Electric Chair and the Future, great songs I will listen to the whole album just to hear them.

Diamonds and Pearls has cream, it dosen't need anything else, Cream is that great.

I will defend MPLsOUND to I die, I know its not very popular, but I love this album, tight, consistent catchy and funky.

So theres proof that even crap albums have great trax on them. I mean its good to listen to them as well. As great as Purple Rain is, I am wholly tired to listening to it at times, and you can only hear Adore so many times, before you want to hear something else like "I like it there".
