Purple Rain Deleted Scenes (with gifs and script references) Hey guys,
Again, I did a thorough search and saw that this topic has been discussed many times, but all of the threads are closed/old now and I couldn't reply to them! But I have some visual aids and information regarding the script (nothing new, but I've just put it all together) to get a clearer idea of what was filmed and what wasn't.
The script btw can be found over here: http://corky.net/scripts/...eRain.html
So I want to start with the scene that takes place after The Kid and Apples sleep together for the first time; originally Apples (Vanity in the script) was to wake up to the sound of The Kid's parents fighting, gets scared and hightails it out of the house. Morris obviously followed them home earlier and sensing an opportunity, follows Apollonia:
(NOTE: I changed Vanity to Appolonia in the script just to make it clearer)
So this scene was actually filmed in its entirety, and at least at the time the trailer was edited was still in the film. These two clips from the trailer and the music video for Jungle Love (both on the Purple Rain dvd) still exist:

As you can see, the first one is of Morris grabbing Apollonia, and the second is them running back to the Caddy. Fun note: you can see Morris trying not to get his stacy adams dirty LOL!
Following this, we have a long dialogue scene within the Caddy:
(52) INT./EXT. CADDY -- NIGHT Jerome drives. Morris and Apollonia sit in the backseat. He gazes at her ardently-- MORRIS Jerome! Jerome snaps a look in the rear-view -- Morris gives him a deft nod. Jerome opens the glove compartment, searches through the cassette tapes. He finds the one he wants, snaps it into the player. RESTAURANT AMBIANCE fills the car... Note: The restaurant ambiance will grow in volume, and will be followed by exaggerated dinner music, punctuated with strings and delicate cymbals. The MUSIC plays throughout this scene -- and Morris times his words to the ebb and flow of the piece to insure the proper dramatic effect. ...dinner MUSIC begins-- JEROME Cocktails before dinner? MORRIS Yes -- two piña coladas. APOLLONIA Uh...make mine a virgin. JEROME Okay... Jerome braces his knees against the wheel, pours two premixed coladas into plastic glasses-- JEROME (to Morris) Will you be having a virgin as well? MORRIS Ye-es! For dessert!! Whawhak! Jerome stifles a laugh, pours a rum miniature into Morris' glass. He hands them back-- MORRIS Thank you. Here you are, dear. They savor their drinks -- Morris' fervor grows by leaps and bounds-- MORRIS Jerome, uh, get your pad and pencil, I think it's gonna be kinda right. If my judge of character is correct, it's going to be about loving tonight. (a beat) Stop me when I get to seventeen. Jerome places a pad by his side, pencil at the ready. He settles the Caddy to a cruising 55 -- Morris looks deeply into Apollonia's eyes-- MORRIS Excuse me, baby...I bet you didn't know I had a piece of this restaurant, did you? (a beat) May I taste that? He takes Apollonia's drink, slurps a little, burps-- MORRIS Huh, excuse me, that's kind of weak...here, try mine. She does, and begins coughing violently- - APOLLONIAGood God! MORRIS Y'know...they say that saliva is an aphrodisiac. (a beat) You look so lovely tonight. APOLLONIA (coughing) Why...thank you. MORRIS Probably you'd look better under exotic...red...liqhts. (another thoughT) I wish you could see my home. It's...it's so exciting. He leans close to her, speaks in a soft, sexy voice-- MORRIS In my bedroom, I have a brass waterbed ... APOLLONIA Oooh! MORRIS I have an Italian cook, Gino Izogochograchi, or something like that. She giggles, looks at him deeply-- MORRIS It's funny...your eyes -- when you stare at me like that, it causes my stomach to qui- quiver. Oh, Lord... An idea flashes across his mind-- MORRIS Do you like diamonds? APOLLONIA Uh, huh. MORRIS Yeah ...? APOLLONIA Yeah. MORRIS I know it's rather masculine, but -- try this one on. He slides a large glass diamond on her finger-- APOLLONIA Ohhh! MORRIS My God, darling it fits. He studies her hands closely-- MORRIS You must have strong hands, but -- they're so soft...like oils in my bubble bath. (a beat) Damn ... He leans close to her-- MORRIS Darling...? APOLLONIA Yeah...? MORRIS I'm not usually so forward, but -- would you like to make love to me? I can make it so nice ... She giggles freely, looks at him with big eyes-- MORRIS Do you know what is meant by the words, huh, I hate to use them, they're so harsh, so American...I mean, and yet on the other hand, they're exciting words. The words... (pause) ...chili sauce. Oh, Lord. (a beat) MORRIS You know, I haven't made love in so long, but with you I know it would be just like riding a bike. I'd remember everything I've ever learned. (a beat) Baby, if the kid can't make you come, nobody can. Jerome checks off his pad-- JEROME (whispers) Morris..! MORRIS Yeah...? JEROME Seventeen. Morris fixes Vanity with his half- lidded, pouty-lip look-- MORRIS Huh, what's it gonna to be baby?
So this of course ended up being the track "Chili Sauce" on The Time's Ice Cream Castles, released just after the movie. However the tracks were recorded around the time the film was in production, which for me totally blurs the line between what came first and what was inspired by the other....for me, the interesting part is the line "if the kid can't make you come, nobody can!" is still in there, which would've been damn confusing in the film seeing as Prince's character is specifically referred to as "the kid" several times. I know "the kid" is also an affectionate term to use referring to yourself also, but why would they have Morris use this phrase? Even on Ice Cream Castles it feels out of place.
So no word on whether this scene was intended to be filmed, or was cut after Vanity left the project and Prince decided to use it on the album instead. But interesting that a chunk of it (Morris and Apollonia leaving the kid's house) was filmed.
Anyway, just wanted to provide some gathering of information! Still have a few more scenes to cover, obviously. Illustration work: http://youngearlgrey.tumblr.com

you might want to get a copy of it as it would obviously make it easier to do what you are doing, as you can see what's included or not

Wait....you can actually GET a workprint of the film?! How does one obtain such a thing? Illustration work: http://youngearlgrey.tumblr.com

Back then during the "PR" mania, I also thought Morris was reffering the name "Kid" to Prince. "Why would Morris give props to him?" was what I was thinking.
The only other person that I heard use the nickname ("Kid") was Richard Pryor on one of his records.

Also the fight scene with Jellybean is shown in When Doves Cry. I really don't get why they deleted that scene

Questlove claims he's seen the complete "P.R" movie with all of the edited scenes put back in. I don't know if he was telling the truth or trying to rile up fans on the org.

Could be that he knows Albert Magnoli on a personal level - who I'm sure has the director's cut within possession - and let him watch it.
The director's cut is definitely in desparate need for an official release.

It would be on a bit torent somewhere by now. So I don't believe that either

I got that workprint (horrible quality) ..is there more out there then? "Climb in my fur."

Really? Interesting. I'd like to know if the entire "barn scene" was left in.
Not that I'm asking anyone to post it but I'm surprised someone would hoard a copy that long. I've heard the uncut movie has been in the collector's circle long before the DVD anniversary release.
Who knows? Maybe in 2014 the "30th Anniversary Complete Version" will be released.

The work-print tape has some shows in directors mode without the incidental music such as th "bar seduction " scene with Morris and Apples..no music just crowd-crew noise..and extended Lake Minnetonka scene "You were great last night".."I just got lucky" etc...
It also shows Prince "terrorizing" Apollonia and Morris more than what was shown ..before he kicked Morris into the trash can etc...and the race between him and the train
There's no barn scene on the workprint
2uestlove aint seen shit we all haven't
It was disucssed before that there was probably nothing left from the cutting room floor because they weren't thinking that far in the future way back in 83. "Climb in my fur."

The whole movie is a deleted scene. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

apparently what circulates as the trailer is actually the directors cut

Of all the deleted footage for this film, I'd really like to see the train race. It was scripted and I believe a small portion of it was used for the When Doves Cry montage.

Thanks rdhull...Cool to hear that we didn't miss a whole lot. I guess from reading the script it made me think there was more deleted scenes.
I agree they probably weren't thinking to save footage way back in 1983. They didn't know if the movie was going to be a huge success or a huge flop.

I believe the train race was filmed, as it takes place around the same time as the fight with Jellybean at Apple's rehearsal - and that was filmed in it's entirety.
I haven't had a chance to come back and post what else I have, but this what I believe was shot:
- Scene at The Kid's house with Apollonia and Morris - Barn scene - Fight at Apples rehearsal + train montage - Jill's piano scene (before she gives The Kid the tape) - Extended dialogue between Apollonia and Morris at the club (brass waterbed etc) - Extended opening scene for Apollonia; getting the cash off the businessman to rent the hotel - Extended opening scene at First Avenue; Jungle Love
I'll have to go back and read the script again, but this is just what I'm gathering from snippets scene in the trailer/music videos. Illustration work: http://youngearlgrey.tumblr.com

wow....I saw this script back in august 1998 my freshman year of college and printed all the pages of it which this version of the movie was much more risque than the released version.

Why in the world is Morris gripping Apples by the neck? Dang! "Do you really know what love is?"

APOLLONIA: Your nose alright? MORRIS: My nose is fine, I’m just wondering if I fucked my shoes up…
Finally...after some 20 odd years...I have a new Morris Day line to add to my mental rolodex. I will be spending the next few days at work waiting for the opportunity to use it.
And yes...I wear Stacy Adams' to work. Not the Morris Day two-tones (I save those for special occasions), but no dress shoes touch my feet unless they are Stacy Adams.
Awesome thread! She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....
