SOTT/Wizard Of Oz

I've always felt that SOTT should have been titled (or at least was a homage to) OZ.The reason is because there's so many Wizard of Oz type references. Dorothy Parker (Dorothy), the affliction brought on by a witches curse(wicked witch of the west), Princes high Camille munchkin voice on songs like If I Was Your Girlfriend, You Got The Look etc. And of course the obvious "oh we oh, oh oh's" from It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night which were what the wicked witches' henchmen sang in Wizard Of Oz.

Not to mention the cover art which has a crystal ball as a centerpiece (like the crystal ball the wicked witch used in Oz). Play in the Sunshine also talks about a big white rabbit so I guess he added a little Alice in Wonderland to the mix too. Maybe he wrote it as a soundtrack to be played along with WIZARD OF OZ just like Pink Floyd allegedly did with their Dark Side Of The Moon album back in the day?

After all Prince did like to make "answer" albums of previous rock gods(Purple Rain=Hendrix, ATWIAD=the Beatles, SOTT=Pink Floyd, etc) not to mention the Pink Floyd like sounds in the song IT. Also the line in Strange Relationship, where he says "isnt it a shame this aint a movie...". Plus the fact that his face is Wicked Witch of The West green color on t e cover of the album and cd. All in all the cd, album Sign of The Times is a sexy, adult version of Wizard Of Oz, or so it seems

The tornado got turned into Hurricane Annie. Annie sounds like Auntie. Dorothy had an Auntie Em.

Play in the Sunshine is kind of like the advice of Follow the Yellow Brick Road.

I'm just snowballing here.

1. Housequake is an obvious reference to Dorothy's house being picked up by the tornado.

2. U Got The Look is about Glinda (whose dress was a shade of peach).

3. Adore is the Scarecrow's answer to Dorothy's, "I think I'll miss you most of all."

4. If I Was Your Girlfiend is the Cowardly (Gay) Lion singing to the Scarecrow and Tin Man.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Me and my friends used to alway talk about the odd "Wizard of Oz" type vibe to SOTT, both the album and the concert film. We used to joke that Prince was trying to look like Dorothy with his two little braided ribboned tails and rounded hair as a rough mimic of her hairstyle + ribbons in the movie.

But you know at the last "Cebebration" event at Paisley Park, there wa sone night where Prince started saying "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain... we are all the man behind the curtain".

Guitar World magazine said that S.O.T.T was just that. A "funky Wizard Of Oz" type trip.

Maybe instead of playing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side", we should bump the 1st 2 sides of "S.O.T.T" along with the movie.

....then again, maybe not.

The Prince and Friends Rendition of The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy Gale- Prince (he already has the ruby slippers).

Scarecrow- Bria (she won't need any makeup).

Tin Man- Tony M. (he can't sing, he can't dance, he can't rap, and he definitely doesn't have a heart).

Cowardly Lion- Jerome Benton (for the Prince/Benton sex tape outtakes).

Toto- Andy Allo's wig.

The Wizard of Oz- The almighty Jehovah.

The Wicked Witch of the West- Shelby J. (she can borrow one of Prince's wigs)
