When I first heard it I was young and unaware that it was a cover, the (yeah phase). Then in finding out it wasn't original and how Prince took some liberties with the lyrics it became a nay. Plus I can't really stomach the ending anymore, the first two minutes are solid, but after that it's downhill for me.

It wasn't written by her, but she recorded it originally. I agree entirely about the effect it has.

To my mind, the song's lyrical content is fundamentally about the sadness and helplessness that emerges at the point of a breakdown in a relationship and the original performance and arrangement captures that best. The recording by Prince seemed, at least to me, to fail to recognise (let alone convey) that underlying sentiment.

That's what I've always thought, too--

That point where she realizes that no matter what she does, he doesn't want her anymore.

In the second verse, she says to "just give her until the morning to give up this fight" (paraphrase).

It's very sad...

don't get me wrong, i don't mind sexual prince or prince just crooning about his

I agree. I really love the song but can do without all the "I offer you a sexual relationship" crap. It ruins the whole meaning behind the song.
