It's a bass guitar.

In Los Angeles, he played it a few times, but I doubt a picture will turn up from these shows.

He played it with the lights off.

Those that were on the opposite side of the piano would have the best chance of getting a shot.

I'll never forget the night of this concert as it was the night my beautiful cousin suddenly died; she was only 46. She was the first Prince fan I ever knew in the early 80s & she took me to my first Prince concert in 1993. We had a wee affinity for each other cuz we shared a love for him. Just remember watching the setlist unfold online then getting the sad phonecall. Her gravestone has a little golden something special engraved on it & it makes me smile so much every time I see it. I know she would just have adored it!

I see no connection b-ween 20ten and Welcom 2

Edit: Didn't he say he was ill during an interview in Canada? I hope he's recovering well. neutral

That's the sad part.

the tour starting in Europe was somehow connected to the release of the 20Ten cd(only released in Europe) then it turned into the Welcome 2 America section, I think he only played once in awhile 2 songs from the album... Sticky Like Glue and another... this period is just all over the place. It started out with high hopes and expectations of reunions with band members and dancers and the the Bobby Z incident

But as in the last few years the tours Prince does does not feature or highlight the music of the new album...

He played Future Soul Song in LA. The Twinz wrapped him up in a sheet. It was quite lovely. Nice song. music

20Ten, an ok album,

but not as good as it used to be.. wink

I think it's a great album, the only song on it i don't care for is Laydown.

^

You don't care for Laydown.. really?

Funny RomeoB., cause I feel the other way:

Laydown is about the only really great song on 20Ten.

Laydown - and Future Soul Song... those are really good... imo. wink

Prince still has the goods to wow on stage

PRINCE, the self-proclaimed "Purple Yoda of funk, arrived on stage for his first Australian concert in a decade amid a hail of electronic thunder and lightning effects.

Parallels to the opening of his 1992 debut tour here, with the landmark Diamonds and Pearls album, were undeniable.

This time, however, the love symbol which became his name during the intervening years formed the shape of the giant stage, rather than the lighting rig which rose above it.

Always one to tease his audience, instead of Prince rising from beneath the stage as the opening melody of Purple Rain began to play, the musician who appeared in a halo of white light was actually acclaimed Kansas acoustic guitarist Andy McKee.

The suspense was finally over moments later as Prince arose, outrageously resplendent in gold-sequined tails and matching flared trousers, the stage bathed in yellow light as glitter rained from above on the audience for the anthemic song Gold.

"This is the only way to have a party, right?" Prince asked the crowd, as he worked every curve and corner of the central stage.

The energy level went through the roof of Sydney's Allphones Arena on Friday night as the band launched into Jam Of The Year, featuring Shelby Johnson on vocals, while Prince pounded out a jazz-funk jam on a purple piano which was wrapped in its own video effects screen.

It was the words "Dearly Beloved" that heralded the promised barrage of hits as the audience followed instructions on Lets Go Crazy, which segued into the funkabilly of Delirious, then swapped back again as 1920s-styled dancers, The Twinz , performed a contemporary version of the Charleston.

Prince's frustration was visible when his guitar failed to work for the screaming solo which should have ended the song, but he took the glitch in his high-heeled stride.

Plumes of smoke erupted around the stage for 1999, then it was bathed in scarlet light for Little Red Corvette, complete with some fancy footwork and vocal improvisation in place of the usual spoken bridge.

After a brief interlude, during which the three female backing vocalists performed Lianne la Havass hit Lost And Found, Prince returned to reclaim his song Nothing Compares 2 U as a feisty, soul-drenched duet with Shelby J, featuring an epic church organ solo by Mr Hayes on keyboards.

More mega-hits followed: Take Me With U, a crowd singalong on Raspberry Beret, and The Twinz gyrating suggestively to Cream.

Lucky crowd members from the $470 cocktail table seats were led on stage to dance as Prince paid tribute to his late rival Michael Jackson, mashing Don't Stop Til You Get Enough into The Times classic song Cool.

Then it was into hardcore fan territory with the yearning ballad Sometimes it Snows in April, complete with a storm of white confetti. The delicacy of McKee's light, finger-picking acoustic style and almost flamenco flourishes became a signature of concerts quieter moments, particularly during the interplay with Prince's electric guitar.

Prince also reclaimed the hit he penned for Martika, the prayerful Love Thy Will Be Done, before getting the crowd back on its feet, for some down and dirty dancing with super-funky renditions of Mountains and The Dance Electric.

The band then left the stage for a bracket of songs which, as Prince declared, were originally performed and recorded entirely by him alone. Triggering sample from his piano, he effectively scratch-mixed a thundering version of When Doves Cry, trading vocals with the audience, then mashed up a progression of early hits, from the bass-heavy Hot Thing, through Nasty Girl and into Sign of the Times.

Doing his best James Brown impression, Prince then declared "You all ain't ready for me - goodnight and pretended to storm offstage, returning moments later to massive cheers, silhouetted against a blaze of white light for The Most Beautiful Girl in the World and then plunging into darkness for the spiritual Forever In My Life.

The band returned for the electronic 80s pulse of I Would Die 4 U and an epic version of Kiss, one which Prince told his musicians to drop the second verse while he displayed that he can still bust a dance move with the best of them.

Returning eventually after what must be the longest instrumental introduction ever, Prince continued to perform the longest version of Purple Rain imaginable, showering the stadium in purple light and you guessed it, purple confetti.

His breakthrough hit Controversy, mashed up with touches of Housequake, brought official proceedings to an end, proving Prince still has what it takes to delight, challenge and still occasionally confound his fans.

Prince continues to perform with concerts in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne until May 30.
