PRINCE AND GOSPEL MUSIC

THOUGHTS?

I think this is in his future and he would be great at it. The Cross, Willing & Able, Holy River, Forever In My Life, The Ladder....all gospel inspired songs. pray angel

Could you handle an all gospel album from Prince?

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose

Yes, it'd be interesting. He's made many songs in the gospel vein, like "Willing and Able" and that unofficial "Uh-Huh" song. But many of his songs that have to do with the gospel are not in the usual gospel style. I don't think he'd confine himself to the label "gospel music."

Since there's a thread about Toure's Harvard lecture on Prince (funny, didn't find Prince very popular at all when I was there - maybe these scholarly treatments of Prince, like the conference in NY in another thread, will change that), here's a Toure tweet on this subject -

"That Prince is not widely considered a gospel artist is part of his genius as a gospel artist. He fooled sinners into listening to the word."

Do you feel fooled? And does it matter if you listened to "the word" for the music, but reject the lyrics/message?

P has already done a full entire gospel LP. It's called "Lovesexy".

Lovesexy was technically a gospel album but with secular lyrics.

He is not regarded as a gospel musician due to his music. I love gospel music (not the religious content). I would love to see him do a gospel album leaving out the religious overtones and concentrating more on progressive political lyrics regarding themes like oppression, discrimination, poverty, injustice, racism, sexism, homophobia etc. If anyone can do it he can. And if people believe he is a sinner now for his past music this would cause many people's head to explode and create controversy.

Could you explain that, Timmy? I know what the gospel (as in, the message) is, but not super knowledgeable about gospel music, and you've often got thoughtful things to say, so I'm curious to know what you mean.
