Best Prince songs.

Sorry, I'm new in this community. I know such subject has been brought to discussion many times, but it seems that it's been all in old topics that can't be commented anymore (that expire after sometime, I suppose). I would like to bring it back. I see that many of the lists answered concentrate only on b-sides and rare tracks, like it would sound more intelligent or something. Ok, but how can you list the best Prince songs and NOT mention Purple Rain, Kiss or When Doves Cry? There is just some obvious Prince pantheon, I suppose. I've been a Prince fan for the past 5 or 6 years, and I confess I don't know all of his albums properly. But most of them I do. He has a huge and impressive work. Only recently I got into the (great, I think) Emancipation album, for instance. So anyway, these are the greatest Prince songs in my opinion.

1. When doves cry

2. If I was your girlfriend
3. Kiss
4. Purple rain

5. Little red corvette
6. Erotic city
7. Something in the water (does not compute)

(A personal favourite I guess, haven't seen many people writing about it, I just think it's genius.)
8. I would die 4 U
9. 17 days
10. How come U don't call me anymore?

11. The beautiful ones
12. Raspberry beret

13. She's always in my hair
14. Sign 'o' the times
15. The ballad of Dorothy Parker
16. Anotherloverholenyohead
17. Uptown
18. Controversy
19. Let's pretend we're married
20. U got the look

21. Baby I'm a star
22. America
23. Darling Nikki
24. Anna Stesia

25. Scarlet pussy
26. Tamborine
(This song is so clever and humorous. I think the album Around the world in a day is very underrated. Not a deception in anyway, like many critics said comparing it to Purple rain. They are just very different.)
27. Cindy C.
28. Delirious
29. Dirty mind
30. Private joy

I thought of Nothing compares 2 u, but, although it's a great song, I don't think his version is good enough to be on the list. I also thought of his greatest 90's (Get off, My name is Prince, My computer) and 00's (Te amo, corazón, Illusion, coma, pimp & circumstance) songs, but I don't think they are in the same level of most of his 80's stuff.

razz What would be your lists?

Welcome to the .org!

However, I've never favored his 1980s music. There were some classics, but I like 1995-2009 better. My list:

1. Sometimes It Snows In April

2. Come On

3. Controversy

4. Sign O The Times

5. All The Critics Love U In New York

6. The Word

7. Purple Rain

8. Somewhere Here On Earth

9. Wall Of Berlin

10. The Love We Make

I'm not quite as certain about 11-20, as I usually don't make more than a top 10 list, but...

11. Dinner With Delores

12. West

13. Into The Light

14. Dolphin

15. Lady Cab Driver

16. Here On Earth

17. Xpedition

18. Cream

19. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?

20. A Case Of U

It's cool to see "Wall of Berlin" on a favorites list. It felt like I was the only one who loved it that much.

Many list threads concentrate on b-sides and/or rare tracks because they have some great songs and amazing music, it's got nothing to do with sounding more intelligent. Also take into account that some people who have been fans longer than a few weeks or a couple of years may be a little tired of talking about the classic well kown songs, that's not to say they do not like them, it's just interesting to talk about the many other songs in his catalogue from time to time.

Some people may feel that these songs are not their favourites because

1. Personal choice

2. They have been played to death and some people get sick of them through mindless repetition

3. They may be accused by some obsessive purists as less than authentic fans, if they only dig the big hits rather than a demo version of Electric Intercourse etc.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
