funny when prince told the male fams for going front row cos he found it hard to sing his ballads!

amazing time

the chick who sang girls and boys was a little arrogant and fucked up the song...london probably

Yeah, it was funny. She went up when Prince asked if anyone could sing Manic Monday, then when she got there asked if she could sing Girls & Boys. Fine so far, but then she forgot the first line lol. The girl who sang How Come U Don't Call me was awesome though. At one point Price stopped the music and she thought she'd done something wrong but he just wanted to say she was too good. When she hit the high note in the second first he made a little bowing gesture like, we're not worthy. Wasn't just girls singing. After those a guy went up and sung Shake. It was a great soundcheck and a great night.

Yes, he stops her. And then I think she says she's so nervous or something, because P then says, "don't be nervous, these are all your friends here" - he sounded so sweet and encouraging!

Nice to know that he let guys sing too. Thanks for your post.

ONA was my favourite tour.

Can't believe it's been 10 years.

It's so interesting that he was so interactive and warm with the fans/audience. This is the guy people say "hate his fans"? (Btw, was this the tour when a crazy fan tried to give him her CD containing one of his songs that she "improved" for him? - I'll have to check)

Do you have a favorite memory from the tour?

Yeah that was from the infamous "Prince made a disabled girl cry" thread.

http://prince.org/msg/12/11483

I met a lot of cool orgers during my 2 night stint in Manchester.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

wee jimmy was the short guy at the gay hotel in manchester. he was also at one or two 21 nights gigs but i don't know if you were there the same times as him, but he was in the slug and lettuce at least once or twice

fuck knows how out of all the fucking hotels in the entire of manchester you picked a gay hotel by accident. normally you would need to do a lot of research to get that lucky wink

You're welcome, it's good to remember biggrin.

I don't think he was showing any bias to the girls, they were just the quickest to get up there with him. At one point he ribbed the guys for being keen enough to push their way to the front row but not being manly enough to come up and sing. Or something similar to that, I was there and have the boot but not listened in a while.

At the time I wanted P to be singing more in the soundcheck but looking back it's so cool to have been part of the whole experience. It was nice to see him being a little more natural and casual.

And whoever said he's supposed to hate his fans, that's certainly not the case. His fans hate him and he loves them for it lol.

RIP sad

actually his comment was about it being the same faces down the front all the time, and how it was always guys. there was another comment which i think was during the actual show, and in that he asked the guys not to sing along to the ballads as it was weird hearing guys singing the lines back to him or words roughly to that effect

he was basically moaning that he was playing his ballads to a see of guys in the front rows instead of girls who were further back

during the first soundcheck there was the issue of seating. it was general admission, but someone noticed the tickets had seat numbers and because they ended up further back but had a ticket closer up front, he started moaning about it to the stage manager and then prince came out and literally right down into the seating area. he was standing right in front of me and i said how about we do the soundcheck where we are seated, and then sit in the allocated seats for the gig, to which he said "you want to be my manager dontcha, i don't need a manager", and then asked everyone if they had a seat, everyone said yes, and he said "well sit where you are" or something like that

then toto started moaning to prince, so prince asked to see his ticket, and took toto to the back and said the 15 row was where he would sit, which is the best view and sound in the house, and toto wasn't having any of that and was arguing with prince about the seats, which was hilarious. toto did the dance competition with another guy who won $700, prince gave him 7 x $100 bills. the guy showed me the money outside, and i didn't even have to shout like tom cruise

Oh, I've seen quite a few posts around here about how he "hates his fans." But you know, it does seem that he handles the situation with aplomb. There's been many stories about unreasonable fans bitching and moaning, and in the face of it he shows great composure and humor. Btw, I thought that "pfunk" song to his fans was quite genius. He is not the typical pop star, and his fans aren't the typical fans either, are they? lol

P actually gave a guy $700! That must've covered the guy's costs for that night!

Thanks for sharing.

and Uni, I was with you all day and all night...

The orger who sang Girls and Boys was Sneha... she won't mind me saying her first name...

Great day. Sound check, show, after show, after show club... what a day...

And I remember in the sound check he said 'Who's cool?' I said to him 'Morris Day?'. Prince looked at me and say 'Morris Day?! No he ain't cool, he's a fool.... Miles Davis, now he is cool...'

Then he asked for a request and my g'friend said to him 'Movie Star'! That freaked him out a bit.. He did a double take and you could see he was going to say something about that being a boot track and then he remembered it was released on Crystal Ball and he looked at her and made a freaky funk face and then looked the other way.. My g;friend ended up on stage with him later dancing to alphabet street and dancing with him while he was doing a keyboard solo. She was so happy..

He was so playful that day.

I just feel so lucky to have seen that aftershow too at the Marquee. It was short, but I got to see him do Dolphin and Tamborine....

do you remember the guy who said he liked prince's jumper?

Uni,

I remember that. I just was freaked out while I was standing there and all of a sudden, Prince was standing right next to us with his bowl hat on and talking about freaking tickets. It sort of made everything seem so crazy. He was saying, 'well all i know is I got the best seat in the house!'. So cool. (and made those complaining about seats being filled a bit embarrassed that Prince came into the audience and dealt with it himself).

actually a lot of the gigs get mixed up. with all the cellys and 21 nights in london with 2 shows a night, it's easy to get it mixed up. ONA wasn't so bad as whilst it was 10 years ago it was 3 nights in london, and 2 nights in manchester. i also saw david bowie re-open the hammersmith appollo the night before prince when he did a special fanclub type gig just for fans, playing a small venue for him and it wasn't part of a tour, he did just a few spot promo gigs for fans in smaller venues and he played nearly 3 hours of what was basically the best of bowie, all the bowie songs you could ever want to hear, except he let us down by not playing the laughing gnome. he even played bewley brothers and i think he did under pressure too, and even absolute beginngers i think he did!! i had a great view in the front middle of the balcony

i saw/met connie doing manic monday at the celly too. they were the best of times, they were like butlins for prince fans. sitting in the studio with prince and the time, sitting on prince's motorcycle, going to the movies with prince, dancing on stage with prince at paisley park playing a set of classic funk covers, standing in paisley park watching myself on the big screens from a tv show i was at in london after prince stuck the VHS in the VCR himself, standing a couple of metres away, playing hoops and ball games in the grounds of paisley, the cook outs, just crazy mad shit. you would stand in paisley and turn round and prince is standing right next to you, playing a game to see how long he can stay there before you notice and then react and he get's spotted

what other artist has ever had a kareoke session for fans or opened their studio up to them? it was like going to graceland with elvis being there

Wow, great Bowie memories too!

You got to do all those things? - do you live in England or Minnesota? Anyway, I know the accounts of Prince taking everyone at a concert to see "Minority Report" (I guess that'd be in 2002) - did he pull that kind of stunt more than once? What movie did you see with him?

Sounds like it was a crazy good time back then. I can't really think of any other pop star who's let fans hang like that. And all the shows - who can play 2, 3 shows per night, night after night?? Legendary...

i'm from scotland

we went to see minorty report. i was planning on seeing it with my mate after i got back from mpls, but i got back and told him prince took me to see it lol

i think it was the second celly, in the afternoon one day like a tuesday about 2pm there were just a few people about and we were invited to a rehearsal at paisley. just 20 or so people and he did a few takes of dorothy parker/four and a bunch of other cool stuff, most of which he didn't even play at the main show. some quite rare stuff he was trying out, and he did bambi too

i also ended up in the studio with prince and the time in a 2 hour conversation from 4am to 6am. that was mental. sitting in studio b talking about music and movies after seeing eryka badu and common play

His fans hate him and he loves them for it lol.

actually his comment was about it being the same faces down the front all the time, and how it was always guys. there was another comment which i think was during the actual show, and in that he asked the guys not to sing along to the ballads as it was weird hearing guys singing the lines back to him or words roughly to that effect

he was basically moaning that he was playing his ballads to a see of guys in the front rows instead of girls who were further back

during the first soundcheck there was the issue of seating. it was general admission, but someone noticed the tickets had seat numbers and because they ended up further back but had a ticket closer up front, he started moaning about it to the stage manager and then prince came out and literally right down into the seating area. he was standing right in front of me and i said how about we do the soundcheck where we are seated, and then sit in the allocated seats for the gig, to which he said "you want to be my manager dontcha, i don't need a manager", and then asked everyone if they had a seat, everyone said yes, and he said "well sit where you are" or something like that

then toto started moaning to prince, so prince asked to see his ticket, and took toto to the back and said the 15 row was where he would sit, which is the best view and sound in the house, and toto wasn't having any of that and was arguing with prince about the seats, which was hilarious. toto did the dance competition with another guy who won $700, prince gave him 7 x $100 bills. the guy showed me the money outside, and i didn't even have to shout like tom cruise

Prince stood near my daughter and she was mesmerised jaw near hitting floor, to this day she still tells everyone about it lol

I remember two people stole people's seats and dumped coats and bags on floor, the two people returned from getting refreshments prince was stood talking I think he sat in one of the seats checked tickets stood up and returned the seats to the two that returned with refreshments. The other two soon vanished.

There is a YT post of "Manic Monday and Girls and Boys" sang by NPGMC fans at ONA London. Is that you? It's notable to me for the change of the lyrics "kissing Valentino" to "kissing someone else." Check it out and let us know if that's you! And tell us your story!
